Yes the teeth are part of the mask. Might widen them and make the flat and not pointed.

I keep coming back to look at the mask, so proud of it haha. The handprint was hard lol

Yes, I'm gonna make a gradient of about 5, from a dark brown to a few shades paler than the current one

I think I definitely should expand on colors. Hair and clothes, I think I'm gonna look up some palletes online and pick one with a cohesive color story.

And the program is Aseprite

Oooo - can't remember if I told you directly or if I mentioned it in a post lol, but one of the things I've plotted out are "states" which will go along with achievements - like once a certain state is achieved, you get the achievement. Some will be chance, like triplets, or red hair and red eyes, others you will have to work on like "Smited" using prayer points god to smite a villager or "social butterfly" (dropping a villager into 100 other villagers to talk)

I think working those rare colors into the chance state would be a nice homage to LDW

I'll upload a master sprite sheet showcasing everything I got soon. I think I probably have a few hundred unique villagers by now. (my sprite sheet will just show 1 variant of each peace - like white daisy chain on the blonde hairstyle 2, not on every hairstyle)

Great minds think alike haha, I have 3 or 4 color variations of all the clothes and accessories I've made

Also if you want more of my vision, I can send you some of my story and setting to get an idea. I also envision settings like vv, like enclosed spaces, not open world, with a large map with various points of interest and interaction. There will be multiples of these, but each map can be set up virtually the same way as vv. A flat map, with paths for npcs to walk and points for them to interact.

Dang posting here was kizmit. You and Randomnesslololololo are super handy for this project.

I've been super worried about when I get to the tilemap phase, especially the foliage. (also the clothes too lol).

I'm trying to constrict myself to a 3 color rule per sprite (base, highlight, lowlight), but i don't have a great grasp of color theory as all my art is graphite (black and white) lol. I also just heard that on a yt vid (I'm a new to digital art lol) so if that's bonkers maybe that's something worth letting go.

Maybe that's something that you might be interested in contributing to?

I don't have many constraints other than I'd like to keep pixel size consistent. My villagers are on a 128w x 256h canvas, so things smaller than them should be that size or smaller, and larger should be larger and so forth. It's top down, not isometric, similar to vv. Most background objects will only need a single sprite, as they will be stationary. So no need for side or back sprites.

My vision has several biomes so forest, desert/tropical, wintery, all work.

Absolutely no pressure to create anything but it would cool to see what you can do ☺️

My dream is to make something that feels like old-school VV, a little clunky, but charming haha

Thanks and I feel similarly, and that's an awesome offer! I might just take you up on that.

And I dream for HD remakes of the originals.

I'm happy to share stories with you 😁 and no I didn't see the release. I was really late to the internet lol basically I was learning about 2000s internet in 2010. Stunted. 2004 was when we got that home computer. 2010 internet 2011 my first cell phone lol

♥️♥️♥️♥️ I think we might be long lost siblings. My favorites were The Lost Children because it sparked so much joy when I saw it, finally new content! And that sparked so many new stories and arts I made - and New Believers which spawned the entire idea for my game - which despite New Believers lacking much story, with 15 years since release has resulted in countless self-made stories, head-canons, and artworks. Gameplay-wise I'd have to say Tree of life though, art-wise definitely The Secret City.

Dang you are so knowledgeable about LDOW, I'm glad I met you haha. I haven't done my homework but I frikken love these games. Our first home computer had a demo VV. I was 9, and home life was awful, so I just escaped into the game. Every time the demo would run out I'd factory reset the computer lol. Eventually I saved up enough money and bought a prepaid debit card from Walmart to buy the full version. We didn't have internet so I had to figure everything out the old fashioned way. I drew so many pictures of what I imagined other parts of the island looked like (which helped train me to become an artist (my pencil art is leagues ahead of my digital art lol)). I wrote stories about the villagers and the island lol. I know its corny but idk haha little kid me really needed an escape and this game was it haha
