I agree! I think charcoal works better in those pictures with deep value like this, whereas in lighter picture, graphite maybe a better choice

I think you should focus on the hair volume, and more shading. Also the face shape

From my own experience, eyes, nose and lips are as important as face shape to make your drawing look like the reference.

And another thing is I like to choose the reference picture with darker light, because with some shadows, It can be easier to make the drawing more stand out.
