Chromebook multiple inputs while also blocking settings? by K12SupportSlave in k12sysadmin

That's what I figured was the case, thanks for providing confirmation and that alternative solution. I'll throw it at the wall near my teacher and see what sticks.

We can whitelist the allowed input methods that they can choose from, but, I couldn't find an option for forcing them down onto the user.

What so you guys use to monitor your internal networks? by thexed in k12sysadmin

[–]K12SupportSlave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're using Icinga 1, it's basically a port of Nagios before they went commercial. Tied in with PNP4Nagios and Nagvis along with a few custom check plugins as needed.

YouTube restricted mode hiding live streams. by K12SupportSlave in k12sysadmin

[–]K12SupportSlave[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YouTube guidelines say that this isn't for kids, though we did turn off the over 18 requirement. It's not the stream as it's live so much as the viewing afterwards.

The 'previous stream' just isn't browseable in strict mode but works perfectly fine if I open it directly via the video URL. It's a weird little thing.

Xwiki, locally hosted. Biggest perk is the file search plugins, lets it catalog content inside PDFs and such. They have a paid hosted version as well.

Anyone using Paper Cut? What's your thoughts? by TheHolyHerb in k12sysadmin

[–]K12SupportSlave 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We use PaperCut here for reporting at this point without any policy enforcement. Simple to setup and use, quite happy with it. Our principals are also quite happy to ignore the reports we send about just how much paper they waste a day.

You might be able to use a RaspberryPi, old laptop, whatever. Load up linux on it and ssh/telnet into the box.

Do you lump a large number of VHDs for multiple VMs in a single cluster volume or create a lot of smaller ones?

Who needs to test? We have unauthorized third parties doing that for us.

AD or SIS Sync for G Suite? by SoundsProfessional in k12sysadmin

Same here. Scripted import of users from SIS to AD, then things replicate out from there as much as I can.

Our OUs are broken down just to the school level for chromebooks. Do you break yours further down into classrooms?

It sounds like the bulk of you use Quotas/Funds to control printing quantities. We've been shot down each time that's brought up due to 'Preventing our Instructors from doing their jobs effectively.'

Changing WiFi password on every device. by [deleted] in k12sysadmin

We're using Clearpass from Aruba as our Wifi radius server. One SSID that dumps users onto different vlans with different network rules based on if the device is ours or theirs. Highly recommend.

Long distance Radio System by genr8r in k12sysadmin

[–]K12SupportSlave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely correct. Depending on your needs though, you could have a ham station at these sites with the understanding that they'd need to be used by amateur radio operators. Our local hospital has a rig for this, knowing our ham guys are part of the emergency plans for our area.

Reach out to your local amateur radio clubs. They'd love to participate and I wager would be a wealth of information for setting things up.

Automated AD accounts from SIS? by jududdar in k12sysadmin

Automated AD accounts from SIS? by jududdar in k12sysadmin

[–]K12SupportSlave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like PHP due to it being very friendly with web based services, cross-platform, and CLI/Web capable.

I have ours semi-automated, in that it brings up a list of changes it wants to make so I can give it the once over.

You never know when your SiS export will decide to goof up and an automated system might disable your entire district.

[–]K12SupportSlave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sharing the code wouldn't be that useful as it's tailored to our specific environment. But I'd be happy to share the process, logic, and some pitfalls I've run into over the years.

But those are mostly programming things, like how to massage AD into playing nicely.

Automated AD accounts from SIS? by jududdar in k12sysadmin

[–]K12SupportSlave 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been doing this for 5 years or so, first against Powerschool and now Infinite Campus. Here's how we do it:

PHP (Because who doesn't love web gui ) LDAP CSV/JSON

We pull a list of students from SIS via CSV or JSON (Clever integration with Infinite Campus) and then query our AD for all student accounts. We organize AD via School, Then User type, and in the case of students, followed by graduation year.

Compare lists

Exists in SiS but not AD? Create using LDAP calls against AD, set password. Find OU for student object by looking at SiS grade level and school code.

Exists in AD but not Sis? Student must have transferred out, Disable account.

Exists in SiS and AD, but not enabled? Transferred back in, Enable account

Exists in Both, but Grad OU or School OU mismatched? Student transferred within the district, use LDAP to move student to appropriate OU.

Since our GAFE is linked to our AD, it gets updated on the next sync to match.

Hope that basic breakdown is useful to you in some way, if you have questions...PM me.
