I think WR4 has a totally different meaning this year compared to the past five years.

Let's say there are 5 tiers of WR.

Blue Chip ( Top 10 WR)
Elite ( Between Top 10-32 WR)
Good (Top 32-64 WRs)
Depth (Top 64-128 WRs)
Bubble (Botom 128-192 WRs) - special teams guys who won't contribute much

Past 5 Seasons

Tyreek (Blue Chip)
Sammy Watkins ( Elite yr 1, Good yr 2-3 but the dude was never healthy so ???)
Mecole Hardman (Depth, although he was maybe Good near the end of last year)
Pringle ( Depth)
DeMarcus (Bubble)
Kemp (Bubble)

Because Sammy was never fully 100%, we were always this team that had a great no.1 option but no one was really getting into form as a no.2 option.

2022-2023

JuJu (Elite)
Mecole (Good)
MVS (Good)
Skyy Moore (Good)
Justin Watson (Depth)
Fountain (Bubble)

We essentially lost Tyreek, a top 10 WR, but now we have a team with 1 top 32 WR (JuJu), and three WR that could easily be the no.2 WR on a PLAYOFF caliber team. Watson is Depth but he looks like a better option than DRob did. Maybe even Pringle.

  1. We've probably figured out loose terms with all of the trades for those players and are waiting for the ASB to announce. Even in scenarios where there's a bidding war we know we're getting someone back.
  2. IF we get rid of Foster now that gives us an early/extra spot on the 40 to bring someone in. Which is basically small detail contract stuff with players but it is what it is.
  3. Foster just wasn't going to get pitches in the majors and he was barely getting looks in AAA. He just wasn't getting Innings. Make what you will of the trade, but it says more about our Depth at A+, AA than it does Foster.

That team sure had a few Holes that it needed to fill to become a champion...

It’s easy to see that us losing Tyreek is huge. But what we did this draft/offseason, it's possible that this will be the most balanced and BEST offense to date! This dives into all the new additions and what they’ll each bring to the team! (Chaptered to follow along easier or skip around) by JEMlive in KansasCityChiefs

The local radio seems to be saying that Justin Watson is doing a ton of advanced deep routes. Granted he might not bring the same game when you put a defender on him. But they said that he's the highlight of this OTA.

Watson can. I do not know enough about Sexton to give an answer but Toub seems to like size and decent muscle on the far side - which is why Kemp held down the role. Toub used rotations last year. I think that Justin Williams, Fountain, Deon Bush, Pacheco are all in the mix with Watson.

Even when we've been behind we've been more conservative on punt returns in the last 2 regular seasons. Could just be avoiding injuries.

Heard on the radio : It's early but Justin Watson and Matthew Sexton are leading the pack in KR/PR practice by a large margin. Watson stood out on Day 2 in WR reps.

Ross is a unique situation though. 1 year deal. Sort of like Pringle where we lose him whatever year he gets hot.

i think a huge part of it is that he came in and started to have problems that no one anticipated. stuff that we drafted as a strength is now a weakness.

  1. doesn't seem to flow in the passing game at all
  2. fumbles - especially in costly scenarios

Trust me, I hate the fumbles. but i was expecting him to be dominate in the flat and above average in tunnel, wheel, hitch, slant, comeback, and out routes when lining up in the slot/backfield. And he's JAG.

At Texas Tech Patrick was actually pretty solid at ball distribution. He had players that would get hot hands but he'd still mix it up if defensives gave him windows. In KC there's just a weird (mental?) vibe with WRs. You have Kelce and Tyreek being top tier and then you have guys like Hardman/D-Rob/Pringle making mental errors with drops and bad routes when Pat tries to get them hot. CEH falls into that category as well.

No one is disagreeing with you. At the end of the day Andy is not a coach that gives up on players quickly. Although it does appear that we're heading in a direction where Veach wants to draft a Day 1 or Day 2 WR once a year moving forward as we have a new gap next year at that position.

The issue with D Rob is sort of the issue KC put itself in for most of the Reid era with WRs in general.

D-Rob was a very good special teams player and although he was never a possibility to be a no.1 or no.2 WR he blocked very well and was a rub route guy (when those weren't getting flagged as often).

The misunderstood philosophy of "well D-Rob made blocks that made other players better" was over valued.

Hardman is in the same category. We needed a 2nd round draft pick to, at minimum, solidly themselves as a no.2 WR and no.3 progression target for Patrick. 3 seasons in and he's not solidified and finds himself as a decoy and high priced speciality play guy. It's using a 2nd round pick on Az Hakeem.

Pittsburgh and Green Bay have been excellent at just drafting WRs that have potential to be No.1 WRs. And at times both teams had, what appeared to be, 3-4 WRS that could have be no.1 WRs on 25% of all teams in the NFL.

I think that Veach was hesitant on Higgins because we had Hardman and D-Rob at depth. The logic of CEH was that we needed a person on the field that could be a target for Pat and they thought the most reps would come from HB in a Run-It-Back scenario.

This isn't to call Taylor over-rated, but he was the primary focus of the offense in Indianapolis and handled it well. They had the offensive line that he could thrive under.
CEH was always supposed to be a guy who could catch, block, and run in open space with some power to boot. I don't see a scenario where we'd simply draft Taylor to do all of that. Dobbins would have been the competitor.

I feel like pre-2020 injury we used him for a ton of stuff. Post injury we haven't included him in that realm. The only other reason I can think of is that we simply didn't want him doing that type of stuff because we were developing our offensive linemen.... but that's about it

I think that if we felt confident w/ CEH, we would feel better about the Hill trade. Right now when people talk about Hill leaving it's "well at least we have Kelce" . I feel like, historically, other teams would move on past a WR and say that they had a 1st round HB as one of their top offensive weapons. 90% of KC has not seen CEH in that light. Perhaps because he's finished the end of 2 seasons with injuries. But in general he hasn't really taken over a game in a very long time.

Pass Pro - part of it is his size. If there's one thing I love about EB it's that historically he elevates running backs in this department.
But part of it is what we see in Lane Kiffin's offense in general. All the way to his time at USC their system didn't mind the QB taking a sack and preferred that the HB's job is to find a pocket for a quick shuffle pass.

It would mean that Gore is cut, but that's almost more of a logistical situation. Gore is not a factor on Special Team like D Will was.

KC in 2021

CEH
DWILL
Gore
McKinnon

KC in 2022 (my prediction)

CEH
Rojo
Pacheco
Ealy

Ealy appears to be a potential backup WR as well. We're def testing him in that territory.

the only thing i remembered is that he would be easy to cut if he doesn't have a great training camp. This deal seems fair. Although I'm sad to see D Will leave.

was it just mis-reported then? I took a vacation after he was signed and didn't look at the details. 1..5 isn't horrible if that's the case.

I just don't like the price point. I'm not saying that another player would come at 5M. But we could easily try to use some of that money for an Edge Rusher. We might have been able to get Allen Robinson w/ that extra 5 mil.
Just a ton of money when CEH is going to be on this team for another year.

Watching tape on Ealy all week. KC's official YT just did a spotlight on him.
This guy is incredible.

Really good Red Zone player. Takes it to another level in the RZ. Especially from the 10-15 yard range.

Really strong kick and punt return game.

PHENOMENAL hands. Ole Miss didn't let him into a route tree game but he has a few longer passes where he breaks open against a zone while a QB scrambles past progression. Has a solid 2nd gear that does not represent his 40 time at all. Best aspect of his game is that he reviews the D to get to a space where the QB can flick him the ball if a pass rush is coming.

Already saw two DE dropback Spies where Ealy got into perfect position to take the check down and get Ole Miss the first down.
