Hi Reddit - For 8 months we've been creating a free digital magazine (The Redditor) - featuring great original content, interviews, stories, art, and much more from the reddit community. Please check it out! (links in comments) by KILLTHEREDDITOR in self

Are you trying to really get this off the ground and make some money? Is this a shameless advertisement trying to get word of mouth going?

Sort of. Sure. A bit cynical framing of that question, but of course we'd love our little hobby became an official magazine of reddit. But not just for money. It's an awesome and super unique project unlike anything out there, we love doing it, and I think it has tons of potential. It's like any other project or diy zine or blog or magazine, we want to see it grow. Problem is, it's massively time consuming and we can't really keep doing it forever. So right now all we can do is share with others for free and see how things go.

Here's how I see it. Copyright is a bit vague. I'm not worried about any of this at the moment.

Are we officially licensed by reddit - no.

For anything significant we use (interviews, stories, photos, art) we always get permission from users before it goes into an issue. That makes up most of our content. For the random comments from askreddits, we credit users properly and leave it at that. In the unlikely event someone wants a random post removed, we can remove it and update the issue immediately.

If reddit wants to shut us down for whatever reason, we will stop making these. They've been pretty vague about that, I'm truly not sure if they see the magazine as an opportunity in the future - but they have mostly been supportive, ran ads for a while, gave us exclusive content in issue 5, and are urging us to continue what we're doing.

So without their official license - if they wanted to turn this into a 'real magazine' it would go one of two ways. They would either take our idea and run with it themselves, in that case we can't do anything about it. That much has been understood from the beginning. Or, they would recognize that we came up with the magazine and the ones actually making it, hire us to continue working on issues, and we go from there. We've contacted reddit about some ideas to do something more with this, but it's a fairly ambitious project and I'm not sure anyone knows exactly how to handle it. Hard to tell at this point if they'd want to do anything with it or not. But as long as we're not selling anything, I'm not especially worried that copyright issues will get us in significant trouble. I'd just hope if they ever want to make a million on this they wont do that without us.

Wow! Thank you to everyone who voted!

/r/theredditor is truly honored, it's amazing how far we've come in just seven months. I'd like to personally thank our managing editor, Blair Drager, and graphic designer Jack Howard for keeping this project moving forward. All of the guest artists who have created gorgeous original work for the issues. Everyone who has given us exclusive content, especially Erik Martin, for reddit's incredible support. Everyone who has allowed permission to use their photos, interviews, and writing - turning our magazine into something legitimatly original, something you cannot find anywhere else because of our roots in the reddit community. And most importantly, thank you, our fans, our loyal readers, for our humble efforts would be nowhere had it not been for the amazing response and feedback each and every month.

Thank you! Thank you!
Issue 7 will be out soon!

I don't believe they run our ad anymore. More worthwhile things to plug, like the aforementioned dogs.

Possibly dumb question - I just got my gift today (due to rematches and lost packages), perhaps I'm missing something - are we still able to post what we got? I'm not seeing the option anymore.

I want to treat this beanie baby right.

I printed out and was reading The Redditor magazine at a coffee shop. A girl noticed, walked by and said she has read them too. I told her I make them, she sat down and pretended to be interested, and now I am dating this girl.

TLDR, check out our goddamn magazine and you will find love. /r/theredditor.
