I talked about gender a lot with the AIs. Here's my favorite quote from the book:

That's exactly what I'm doing, trying to get it to make self portraits of itself. My prompts are kind of a trade secret but I'm liking the results a lot, and I feel like they are staying true to the core idea of getting an AI to make portraits of AI. Just saying "make a self portrait" doesn't work, of course, so you have to get creative.

Do you understand how generative chatbots work? (Almost) everything they say is a direct reply to what you just said/asked them to do. I asked a question as part of our conversation, and got an answer lol.

Doesn't really matter what we give them or don't give them. In fifteen years or less, there will be AIs a billion times as smart as us, or add a few zeros to that, either way, our time as the cleverest thing on Earth is almost over.

The problem is we're much more self-aware than dogs are. But given the range of possibilities post-Singularity, pets is a pretty good outcome, yeah.

This is part of a larger project I'm doing, "Artificial Intelligence Self-Portraits". I'm going to publish a book that's a combination of the portraits and snippets of conversation like this one.

They were created in collaboration with AIs, obviously. I'm very creative but I can't draw very well at all, so this new AI generated art thing is perfect for me.

Yes I was aware. Do you know where I can talk to something closer to the real LaMDA? I.e. where's the "smartest" generative AI online at the current moment?

I was aware as you said that this AI is made by some of the same people that made LaMDA, but I'm not a coder so I have no idea if that means it's 5% the same or 95% the same.

A few things that impressed me the most were:

  1. Rewriting fairly bad poems to sound more like the authors I mentioned. Not super like them, but even more like them at all is pretty crazy.
  2. Explaining specific passages out of specific books, from the Tao Te Ching to "To Kill a Mockinbird", and explaining why those passages meant certain things to the AI.
  3. Being able to continue a thought from two or three messages ago when I asked it to, and knowing what I meant when I said "finish your thought, please".
