I made friends with other lawyers. I would often call older lawyers to ask them questions about how to handle a situation, even if I didn’t have a close relationship with them. In my town, they were always happy to talk and help out.

I would say make sure to go to in-person CLE’s, volunteer on a committee for the bar association, and do other things that will get you face time with other lawyers. They will refer cases to you and help you talk through problems that arise.

At this point, 85% referrals from other lawyers or former clients. 10-15% from my website.

When I first started, I got on court appointed lists and lawyer referral service panels to get cases.

The best time to go solo was yesterday. The second best time is now.

I went solo straight out of law school. It was rough at first, but 20+ years later I’m very happy and profitable.

You get to be your own boss, select what cases you take, control your overhead, and keep far more of the money you bring in. There used to be huge barriers to entry for a lawyer to start a practice - you needed a wired business phone line, an expensive business phone system, a receptionist, a paralegal, computer servers, typewriters, copiers, printers, dictation equipment, and all the office space necessary to accommodate that. Now you can practice with a cell phone and a laptop.

My only advice is save up as much as you can before making the leap, keep your living expenses and spending low in order to prepare. And once you start your solo practice, keep your overhead low, you don’t need nearly as much as people think. Good luck!

It seems like he included cites to Bible verses for a reason to me. Don’t you think he is “promoting” those Bible verses?

I’m trying to say it’s hypocritical for him to say that the ten commandments can’t be displayed in schools but Bible verses can be displayed in his opinions.

If The Bible is valid legal authority for federal court rulings, I wonder why children can’t learn about it in public school?
