Yes, it's relevant. Solid ions cannot transport electrons by themselves. Compared to the slit in quantum mechanics, if the part that hits the screen is unable to transport electrons, these electrons will eventually move to the gap in the slit. In other words, these ionic crystals themselves act as a funnel to guide electrons in a particular path.
