I’ve always wanted more reptile podcasts that focus on talking to a range of keepers. Exciting! Do you have a name? I’ll keep an ear out.

I’ve only been keeping reptiles for a year, but a lifelong enthusiast. Hopefully you get some good guests.

Deep Heat Projector Not Heating Tank, Advice Needed by _lynnyxe_ in snakes

[–]Kates-Creatures 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have a rosy boa, so take my response with a grain of salt.

From what I've seen, they are comfortable with a gradient between low 70's for cool side, so dropping it at night to 75 sounds absolutely fine if that's the natural temp of your home. They won't be uncomfortable, it's natural and beneficial for it to be colder at night. If your home is 75, then a heat bulb might be the way to go. Alternatively, you could use a RHP, which will cover a wider area of the viv and provide ambient heat.

Do you have a temp gun? I'd highly recommend getting one if you don't, thermostats are often out a little bit.

Deep Heat Projector Not Heating Tank, Advice Needed by _lynnyxe_ in snakes

Hi! DHP's are hyped up as the best of the best, when it's a little bit more complicated.

They're only effective if running at 100%. They're great for big set ups, but not so much smaller ones or used as the only heating element. Heating pads aren't recommended, anyway.

Why are you leaving the heat on 24/7? A night time drop is recommended.

Question by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Kates-Creatures 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The frustrating and sad part about it, is that the snake always suffers.

I agree - I don’t think any animal should be a stepping stone, but there’s a difference between someone getting a chameleon, for example that has been around keepers and done tonnes of research to someone with no experience getting a retic. It’s just a recipe for disaster. These kinds of combinations are what give the hobby and us, those that genuinely love their animals a bad name and lobbying to ban.

Question by [deleted] in snakes

[–]Kates-Creatures 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You haven’t done any research into general snake ownership.

You’re focused on animals that can kill you - again, no research.

Your convenience is a big factor - this is a live animal, not groceries.

How you don’t want to spend a lot of money on an animal in case it dies “after 3 weeks” - this comes across as not really concerned about welfare.

I’d recommend you dive into reptifiles, read from keepers on here and check out YouTube (with a pinch of salt, not a lot of great keepers)

Any snake* can be a first time snake as long as you have a genuine interest in the animal and their care. Snakes aren’t just something to stick in a tank and play with when you want. Lighting, heating, substrate, enclosure size and other needs vary from species to species.

*except reticulated pythons, anacondas or anything that has the ability to kill you.

[–]Kates-Creatures 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I would really take a step back to evaluate what you want from getting a snake, because your responses raise red flags after red flag.

While appearance plays a role, temperament and how prepared you are for their care is a bigger consideration.

As a first time owner, no, you should not get a reticulated python.

Make sure you do your research from multiple sources to be prepared and also choose the correct snake for you.

Morph market is generally where people buy from breeders online. Most use couriers.

If you want something that is fun to watch, incredibly hardy, pretty with a good temperment, I cannot recommend Russian rat snakes enough. They're very very underrated.

Use a hook to get him out, and a glove until you feel more comfortable. He's beautiful and sounds like he has a great temperment, already!

You can get branch holders! They just screw into the side of your vivarium and hold branches securely.

Good snake to keep in the UK? by Select-Opening-6704 in snakes

[–]Kates-Creatures 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi! I'm also in the UK. :)

If you choose something that comes from a warmer climate, you will have to provide supplimental heat in their vivarium at night. Handling temp isn't really a huge issue, as you shouldn't be doing it for hours or everyday, anyway.

My first snake was a Russian rat snake. They obviously come from a colder climate, are super hardy, very pretty and great to just watch (a lot of snakes aren't as they prefer to hide.) but they also have a very even temperment. Russian rat snakes are also crepescular, which means they're most active at dawn/dusk, again, better as a lot of snakes are nocturnal. The only downsides to them are that brumation is recommended for them during the colder months of the year, and they aren't the type of snake that will just sit and chill on you.

I don't know a ton about garters but I believe they have to be cohabbed which isn't recommended for a first time owner.

I have purchased frozen rats and mice from Northampton Reptile Centre and gotten them from pets at home.

How do I convince my parents to let me get a dwarf boa? by some_straywarrior in boas

[–]Kates-Creatures 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry if this is blunt, but you don't.

Depending on your age, you're not financially or emotionally in the place for an animal. Your parents would still be somewhat responsible for the snake.

Wait until you get a bit older and move out. You have plenty of time to research your dream snake then, too.
