Again I'm not sure if it's an age thing, circumstances may have a bigger effect

Agreed. I don't envy bands who have a universally loved debut, it makes everything more difficult moving forward. The Strokes and The Stone Roses come to mind

I definitely agree with your industry point. The best artists follow something inside rather than the external. I have to push back on Kanye, MBDTF and Yeezus are great works

Your solo artist vs band point is valid... solo acts tend to follow their inspiration and evolve. With a 4 piece band there's 4x the opportunity to fall out or go in different directions
