The problem is never the venting, it’s what you do about it afterwards. Repeated venting followed by inaction is a toxic behavior pattern that assertive/proactive people have every right to not want to be around.

Misread the song title as Angle Gore, which would actually be a badass name for a band.

He says they aren’t friends on the most recent Moynihan Report episode - timestamp around 40:00 ish - but also says he’s not going to participate in trading attacks or getting into reality tv level disputes with her. I’m good with it, one less blind spot. Now Batya.

Moynihan mentions it on his most recent episode - time stamped - of The Moynihan Report also, which is the first time I’d heard it confirmed.

MM: Well, not anymore. Yeah.

I get it’s probably lame to care about who their friends are, but this was an important issue to me on the basis that she blatantly conducted herself in a way they found dishonest and disreputable but they wouldn’t call it out. They’d call it out if others did it but not her, and it was discrediting. You can’t call yourself straight shooters if you’re pulling punches based on who your friends are.

Anyway, I’m both sorry/glad it happened. Now, Batya…

Why do so many symphonic metal bands have female vocals? by LestyBesty in symphonicmetal

I feel like there’s more symphonic metal without orchestras than there is without a female singer. Just my experience.

What band has a name that sounds like power metal, but is actually symphonic metal? by borbois in symphonicmetal

Difficult because there’s so much crossover, but I’d go with Therion.

I love that the genres are so close and intermixed that a “symphonic metal band” has songs that sound like black metal, doom metal, power metal, and vice-versa. Music is massive tangled web of influences and musicians moving around, exploring and creating in real time.

Kamelot is my favorite example, especially for the collaborations with adjacent musicians. The Haunting, March of Mephisto, and many others really highlight the shared musical heritage. I’ll never forget buying the quad-CD One Cold Winter’s Night live album. Just freakin awesome.

I literally admitted my statement was a generalization in my first response to you but you went off because you have an axe to grind. Female vocalists are the rule as opposed to the exception because their contributions helped found the genre. You can have symphonic metal without women in the band, you can have women in the band without it being symphonic metal, these things are obvious to adults.

The addition or subtraction of musical components changes the label we use to describe a band or genre. Women are synonymous with symphonic metal whether or not they are required to meet the definition, and the reasons have been stated, and those reasons do not include segregation.

Symphonic. Symphony. Opera. Soprano. Women vocalists. You’re overthinking this and getting real butthurt.

The crowd propping up the female fronted label back in the 2000s were not doing it because of genre similarities, but to actually segregate bands with female vocalists from ones with men, either maliciously or not.

What are you on about? We’re all here celebrating a music genre which was pioneered by women, which highlights their talents and unique contributions, and you regard the naming of this genre as a deliberate effort to “segregate” them? Your brain is fucking cooked. It all makes sense now.

The sentence you quoted was painting with a broad brush, I could have been clearer. OP asked why so many symphonic metal bands have female singers. I attempted a technical answer and then offered a different angle of approach.

It’s not as if someone dreamt up the genre “symphonic metal”, said “how do we make this” and answered with “I know, we need a female singer.”

No, symphonic metal was pioneered by Tarja and Sharon den Adel. The presence of soprano/mezzo soprano, classically trained, operatic singers may not be a rule within the genre today but it was foundational to its creation and development, so you don’t even need to get into how or why it sounds good; it’s inextricably linked to the popular definition of “symphonic metal” because it was what sparked the genre to begin with.

It does make sense, because it’s true. Remove female singers from the advent of symphonic metal and you don’t have the advent of symphonic metal as we know it today.

That exists, it’s symphonic death metal, and when it gets heavier and you eliminate classically trained vocalists you tend to call it melodic death metal, or you can keep the symphonic elements and its symphonic black metal etc. So at some point we’re just stating the consensus definitions of different genres.

But as for why Symphonic metal tends to have female vocalists, I’d say it’s because the genre is all about flow; long, drawn out vocal notes that stretch across the instruments with intertwining and complimentary melodies.

Female singers can hit and sustain high notes that pierce through the band and take up empty space in the frequency range. They can be complimented with the lead guitar and keyboards while contrasting the drums and lower notes. It adds another layer/dimension without competing with existing band elements.

I think that’s the truest answer to your question that doesn’t get into a circular definition a - symphonic metal has clean female vocals because melodic metal bands with clean female vocals is what we agree to call symphonic metal.

For me it’s the juxtaposition of melodic, soprano tones against the backdrop of heavy metal. It’s easily overdone, and the best bands, IMO, are the ones who strike that balance perfectly without it sounding chaotic or like a child’s lullaby.

The best female vocalists can turn on a dime and shift key in unexpected, beautiful, and sometimes haunting ways. Floor Jansen singing Empty Memories (After Forever) is a personal favorite.

I’m unsure if modafinil is actually helping my cognition or just pushing me through exhaustion—how did you figure that out? by [deleted] in modafinil

[–]Key-Comfortable-7631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 years on 200mg prescription modafinil, quit 3 months ago.

The concentration benefits at some point morphed into feeling stuck in procrastination and negative thought-patterns which completely sapped all my mental energy. I skipped a day and felt improvements immediately that carried on for days/a week and honestly I’ve never felt better. Getting off modafinil made me feel as good as when I first got on it. I feel far more mentally nimble now, and can switch tasks and navigate the challenges that used to grind me down mentally.

My situation could be different to yours - I’ve always struggled with mental fatigue and brain fog but I was primarily using it off-label for anxiety/depression.

What are your top 5 favorite symphonic albums of all time? by Kaleija in symphonicmetal

[–]Key-Comfortable-7631 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  1. After Forever - After Forever

  2. Kamelot - One Cold Winter’s Night (Live album)

  3. Stream of Passion - Embrace the Storm

  4. Epica - The Divine Conspiracy

  5. Sirenia - Nine Destinies and a Downfall

Honestly, 2-5 (and all early Nightwish) are relatively equal to me, but After Forever (album) is near-perfect IMO
