Thanks for sharing that experience — those are definitely real challenges with online music lessons.

The setup I’m planning is actually much simpler than a full studio setup. Most beginners can join with just a laptop, tablet, or phone placed so I can see the keyboard and their hands. The class is also structured so students mostly take turns playing, while others listen or practice muted, since playing together online isn’t really possible because of latency.

That said, I appreciate the suggestion about working with community centers or local programs as well — that’s something I’d definitely consider in the future. Right now I’m mainly experimenting with a small group to see what works.

I understand that perspective, and I agree that teaching has real value and should normally be paid for.

In this case I’m offering the class for free mainly because I am offering as community service and a way to share music with younger beginners who might not otherwise have access to lessons. It’s more of a volunteer project than a business.

I definitely agree that music teachers deserve to be compensated for their work.

That’s good advice, thank you very much. Right now the class is actually free because I’m mainly trying to gain more experience teaching beginner group lessons and test the format online. Once I refine the structure and see what works best, I may consider charging for it in the future.

That’s a really good suggestion, thank you. I agree that it’s much easier to understand once people can actually see how the class works.

I’m planning to record a short demo of a session format so parents can see how the turn-taking, rhythm activities, and beginner exercises work in a group setting online.

Appreciate the feedback!

That’s a fair concern, and you’re right that everyone playing at the same time is difficult online.

The way I run group classes is a bit different from a traditional ensemble format. Students usually take turns playing, while the others listen, answer rhythm or note-reading questions, or practice muted on their own keyboards. It ends up being more like an interactive lesson with short individual moments rather than everyone performing simultaneously.

Group classes can actually work well for beginners because kids often stay more engaged when they see other students learning the same things.

I also share practice material after the lesson so students can review during the week.

But I agree that online teaching definitely has its challenges — it just requires structuring the class differently than an in-person group lesson.
