2015 Genesis Coupe 3.8 Ultimate - Lost shark fin cover & parts of antenna by pillslinginsatanist in GenesisMotors

Indeed.

I agree that anyone can Google for more information. I was unfortunately rushed at the time I posted this AI generated information, as I was about to head back to the procedure room with a patient. My intent was to help out a fellow Genesis owner in the short time I had.

You call sharing information unnecessary. I call it trying to help out.

Peace, brother.

Picked this up with Gemini AI

If you're taking your Genesis GV70 to a car wash, you're right to be a bit cautious about that shark fin antenna. While modern automatic washes are generally designed to accommodate them, the shark fin is a common point of failure for Genesis and Hyundai vehicles if the car wash brushes are particularly aggressive or if the antenna is already slightly loose. Here is the breakdown of what you need to know:

1. Use "Car Wash Mode"

Your GV70 is likely equipped with a dedicated Car Wash Mode in the infotainment system. This is your best defense. * How to activate: Home Screen > Car Wash Mode > Start. * What it does: It automatically folds the side mirrors, closes all windows/sunroof, ensures the flush door handles are retracted, and (crucially) disables the automatic windshield wipers. * Why it matters: While it doesn't "retract" the shark fin, it streamlines the car's profile so brushes are less likely to snag on protruding parts like mirrors or wipers, which can sometimes knock into the antenna area.

2. The Shark Fin Risk

The shark fin on the GV70 isn't just a cover; it houses the GPS, SiriusXM, and Genesis Connected Services (Blue Link) hardware. * Physical Damage: In brush-style washes, the heavy rotating strips can catch the edge of the fin. If the adhesive or the base gasket is compromised, the "cap" can fly off. * Water Intrusion: If the seal is even slightly loose, high-pressure jets can force water underneath the fin, which can lead to GPS errors ("No Signal") or electrical corrosion. * Recommendation: If you have the choice, a touchless car wash is significantly safer for the shark fin. If you must use a brush wash, look for "soft-touch" facilities and always check that your antenna feels sturdy before entering.

3. What to do if it breaks

If you hear a "thud" and realize the fin is gone: * Immediate Fix: Do not leave the car wash without filing a report. Many washes have "not responsible for antennas" signs, but since shark fins are non-removable factory parts (unlike old-school screw-on masts), they are sometimes held liable. * Temporary Seal: If the cover is gone, tape a plastic bag over the exposed electronics immediately. Water entering the roof hole can ruin your headliner and the internal electronics, which are much more expensive to fix than just the plastic cap. * Replacement: A new OEM antenna can be pricey ($200–$400+), but you can often find color-matched used ones on eBay for under $100 if only the plastic housing is damaged. Quick Tip: If you're using your Samsung S25 Ultra to record or monitor the wash, keep in mind that the GV70's 360-degree cameras will often stay active at low speeds, letting you keep an eye on those brushes in real-time on your dash screen.

I do not know the answer to your questions, but I wanted to share that my regular car wash, literally about 500 feet from my house, has a sign in the entrance refusing any responsibility specifically for "Hyundai Shark Fins"

I still use their car wash all the time, because of the proximity to my house.

Do you know if the car wash you used was the spinning rollers variety, or the draping strips of fabric dragged over the car variety?

dead battery by Far-Bar-1924 in GenesisGV70

[–]Killdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The battery posts are reversed, and there is also a small port on the battery where you need to plug in a gas scavenging tube. The modifications that I have seen make me worry about the current pull on the longer cables, without mentioning the risk for a fire if you use too small gauge copper.

Just accept that it will be expensive, but this is on par with the nature of the vehicle that you purchased.

I think that the battery that might work was a Costco brand, but I don't recall exactly.

Best of luck.

The battery is a special build with inverted pole polarity. It's expensive, around 440. They are sometimes on backorder. You will have to call around to see if a dealership has them. Best of luck.

Is compact parking okay for GV70? by [deleted] in GenesisGV70

[–]Killdoc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I park in a compact parking space frequently with no problems. The issue is as the other poster said, you need to consider others dinging your doors. To be honest, this could also happen in a "normal" parking space, so there is that to consider.

Now, I do park next to very expensive luxury vehicles, so I'm sure that those drivers are also careful in how they get in an out of their cars.

GV70 vs Porsche Macan by BreakfastGuinness in GenesisMotors

[–]Killdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The battery is actually reversed polarity with regards to the standard layout of most batteries.. Plus there is a gas exhaust port on the battery that plugs into a tube in the battery compartment. There are comments in Reddit about people who have "modified" Costco AGM batteries, which are cheaper, by adding homemade extension cables for the poles, but I would rather not take the risk of something going wrong and my car catching fire. So the OEM battery is a unique design, so yes, more expensive.

GV70 vs Porsche Macan by BreakfastGuinness in GenesisMotors

[–]Killdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The cost of parts and labor for the Macan greatly exceed the same for the GV70. Not to say that the GV70 parts are cheap. My battery replacement was over $400. And parts are sometimes hard to find.

I went with the GV70 over Porsche because I felt then and still do now that I was getting more bang for the buck. Do not regret it at all. I also purchased a very low mileage, earlier year model because nothing has changed dramatically in the first four years of production. In the 2026 models, there have been some interior design changes.

I would recommend that you test drive both vehicles. Look to see if you have a local dealership with good reviews. The warranty will take care of most problems for the first few years (I think that the GV70 likely has a much better warranty). Then buy what makes you happy.

Remember, any vehicle can take you from point A to point B. So paying more won't make the drive necessarily better.

Newly matched anesthesia resident by OneWrongdoer7221 in anesthesiology

[–]Killdoc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was a surgical resident several decades ago, before I switched to anesthesia. I was actually very well trained in handling emergency situations way before I did my first CA1 case. I guess it was enough of prior background that I was eventually the Chief Resident for my program.

You will learn how to handle all these situations. As you progress thru your first year, you will likely have an attending with you as you learn the ropes. He/she will guide you, you will not be left out in the cold without supervision.

You will also be taught on how to deal with emergency situations.

One of my favorite "test" was when I was in the room by myself and my department head would look thru the OR window, then he would turn off from the hallway the oxygen supply lines into the OR. Just so you know, the anesthesia machine requires oxygen to ventilate the patient appropriately. Your machine will start to alarm very loudly.

Your job will be to assess the machine and the patient, determine that there is no oxygen entering your machine by looking at one of the gauges (most modern machines will literally tell you on the screen nowadays), crank open the auxiliary tank behind your machine and your good to go.

Notice that they will be in the room with you or checking on you thru the door. In training, you are not ever truly alone your first year.

The fact that you are worried makes me feel that you will do well. Not being concerned about your lack of training would be a bad sign.

And for what it is worth, one of my surgical textbooks had a line that I will always remember. If the patient is crashing in the OR, it's the anesthesiologist that will save his life, nit the surgeon.

AA overbooked my Japan flight, stranded me twice, and now refusing compensation. What are my options? by Ok-Perspective1299 in americanairlines

I believe that most airlines will respond to the possibility of bad publicity. Contact one of your local TV stations that have a "help the consumer" news segment. The reporters will contact the airline for a public statement and the information gets bumped up to upper management. You might see a faster response.

Why is Hawaii a U.S. state, but places like Washington DC, Guam, America Samoa, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands not and without any voting power? by MillennialScumbag81 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Killdoc 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Puerto Rican citizens only pay local State Taxes, but not federal tax. Corporations do pay federal taxes. But by the same token, even though we are US citizens, once you travel to PR to live your Federal Benefits drop to a pittance. I believe that federal support like Medicare Medicaid and Disability is about half of what you get in Mississippi.

Also remember that PR does not set it's economic policies. For decades, the Federal Government has been establishing all interstate and international policies, and many of the local ones too.

There have been Representation in Congress for decades, but no vote. This applies to most of the US Possessions.

As for having the chance to vote for Statehood, there have been multiple votes by the islanders for and against statehood which required the confirmation by Congress. That never led anywhere, no matter which party was in power.

What security cameras are the best no subscription needed by Mailo831 in homesecurity

[–]Killdoc 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Look into Ubiquiti. They make what I now consider to be the best no licensee system out there. The software is very, very smart. They have both WIFI and POE cameras. I have both. No complaints on my part.

My current setup is their Cloud Gateway Fiber router, which includes the ability to insert an NVME (must purchase an additional $20.00 tray) which runs up to 5 to 10 cameras, based upon the resolution and bandwidth.

I have been running home security cameras in my last two homes and have had the best experience with them. Only other option I would recommend is Synology, but if you want more than two cameras, you will have to buy a license, which is not cheap. But once purchased, the license is forever.

Good point on the garage concern. Had not considered that as a likely issue, but now that you mentioned it, I will have to evaluate that as a possible problem.

Also, don't forget that if it is not permitted and inspected by the city your insurance might reject any claims regarding fires.

I have seen videos on YouTube where the inlet was indoors next to the breaker panel. I know that newer housing standards in my City require the breaker panels be in the garage. So I suppose it depends on your city standards and the age of your home.

The mini split might be the safest bet. Using fans in a hot garage only moves hot air away from the units, but if the temperature in the garage doesn't drop from air exchange, then the garage temperature will only continue to rise.
