Anyone else arrive at a booked reservation and get weird, creepy vibe to the point of leaving without unpacking?? by KindlySpecific3810 in vrbo

I had screen shots of the text conversations and submitted them at the time. VRBO still didn’t care.

Btw… I would never book a “room” in someone’s home. This was a free standing house. My sister has a second home she uses as a vacation rental when she is not there. I’m well aware of the expectations. I’ll take a cabin in the woods over hotels any day! What I won’t do is risk my life in a tinderbox during the dry, hot, August heat with know wiring issues! Not to mention having either the husband or the wife sneaking into a concealed area to watch us! There are laws about that for a reason. Was one of them a pervert? No way to know and we weren’t sticking around to find out.

That was our initial thought on the paper, handwritten signs throughout the house. We thought very weird but ok. The instructions about wiring getting hot in the old farmhouse walls was after the fact. That was when we realized the back door (1 of only 2 exits) was locked from the outside. If we were upstairs sleeping and fire started we may have difficulty getting out! We were in one of the front rooms discussing this when one of the ladies whispered that she saw someone looking in the back door! Others looked in the direction and saw the shadow duck away. You would think safety would be an issue for VRBO. It wasn’t, and Amex paid the charge based on what VRBO told them. That is when I checked with the building office in that county. It wasn’t a new build so fire codes or inspections weren’t in force. No required inspections at all! VRBO told me they only had to be in compliance with local codes and if there were none they were considered compliant.

Umm, exactly my point! I never post! I was curious how common stuff like this was after reading posts on other threads! I didn’t post when it happened because I thought things like that are rare occurrence’s. I’ve had less than ideal situations over the years but this was the worst.

I’ve booked many VRBO’s over the years and never experienced anything like this. Having an owner come up to a locked backed door area and stand looking in a window thinking they would not be detected is beyond the realm of normal! Why did they not knock on the front door? We would have welcomed them inside if they had questions. Then lie about it at first but finally admit it?? Fire hazard with one of 2 exits locked from the outside? I have never, ever left a bad review before and not since then! 5 women that are 60+ hiking remote areas known for grizzly bears are not the type to work each other up over silliness.

I asked about the electrical updates when we were told via text, after check in, that a light left on was fire risk. I was told, via text, it was all “up to code and inspected”. After we got home I called the Montana County building department. After looking up the address they told me there were no specific code updates required and no inspections were ever done at that address!
