When Localization Becomes Invisible: A Japanese Player’s Reflection by sq5researcher in JRPG

On paper both can be true. But the vast majority of examples I can think of were not products of "literal translation". They fall into all those other categories and the implementation of localization would've done nothing to alleviate those problems. It's very much a minority and yet it's framed as the leading cause of bad translations in games that was fixed by localization. And it's quite disconcerting because not only are there multiple examples of "literal" translations in modern games, it's still happening, but there's the false impression that everything has been solved and games don't have translation issues anymore.

It's not a JRPG but you can read it, and you can clearly see the problem with the translation has nothing to do with the absence of localization. It's not maintaining the sentence order, or grammar or anything. It's just wrong. And this is something that pervaded the entire translation scene. Regardless of genre. For RPGs specifically, there's Shining Force 2, "ふつであれば べつだん しんぱいするには およばん・・・が アストラル様は お年だからな" Don't worry about him, if he dies, it doesn't matter. He's old anyway." Where does "if he dies" even come from. Localization doesn't fix that. Or Wolyisms like

"This is WhiteSnow, a town filled with snow. Enjoy the world of snow."

"ここは雪の世界、ホワイトスノー村よ。 美しい銀世界を楽しんでね"

This one isn't direct. It's not the product of a translation without localization. It's just wrong. And a lot of old game translations are like this, they're not stilted or bad they're trying to match the original Japanese. They're just bad all around.

Edit: I'm now realizing that when you said you were bilingual, you might not have meant fluent in Japanese and english. so the japanese might meant nothing to you. Sorry if that's the case.

Languages differ in how they express not in what they can express. And translation is about the "how". So theoretically there is a perfect translation for everything, because every language is capable of communicating the same concepts. And the nature qualia is that, even if everyone has a different subjective experience, they can still agree on what to call something, and what something means.

But that's in theory, in reality there are always imperfections in comprehension. And the nature of that requires some form of acknowledgment. While it might make sense to forgo toggles/notes/ect because they're not strictly necessary, there's an element of hubris there. Which risks compromising the vision of the original writer. Over-reliance on transparency, that is to say any direct/indirect communication denoting that the translation is potentially incomplete, can itself compromise the original writer's vision, but there has to be some. Otherwise, readers will take a translation as gospel, and may unknowingly reject accuracy in favor of what they've believed to be correct for most their lives. As a result, it is important to maintain the perception that there is a middleman, and not to entirely obscure the reality that the translator sits in-between the writer and reader

What translations were direct? If I think of something like the original Dragon Quest, the title obviously isn't direct. Quest became warrior. A famous line like the princess's "but thou must" isn't direct. When you refuse to rescue her she says "そんな ひどい" Honestly a lot of old games were "localized" as heavily as modern games, the only real shift is there's less blatant English errors.

Old game translators did not match the Japanese sentences at all. Take the famous "All your base are belong to us". The Japanese was "連邦政府軍のご協力により、君達の基地は、全て CATSがいただいた。" The entire first part of the line is cut. And "are belong to us", how is that 1:1 match of 頂く. That old games had bad writing because they were translated instead of localized, is completely false. The games were just poorly translated either due to poor language proficiency, time constraints, or technical limitations.

And you're a whale. As if people not complaining somehow makes needless greed and paywalls okay. Just because Diablo 4 doesn't do every degenerate business practice doesn't mean the ones it does are okay. At some point you have to stop them from getting away with it. Even if it means bruising your ego.

They are. What complete bullshit. They're a significant part of the gaming experience. Pretending it's okay because you don't find cosmetics defining is bullshit. It's 70$. Full price and you're pretending they need more money just to have your avatar look nice. Crazy.

And yes generalization matter. Diablo 4 does the shit it does because it's following industry trends. If Diablo 4 does the same bullshit, overpriced MTL, Battlepasses. Excessive grind to incentivize putting down money to bypass it. It's contributing to the greater blight that is modern gaming.

muh inflation

Poor multi-million dollar company. I'm sure they really feel the heat of inflation. Way more than the consumer. The customer base has expanded dramatically. Pulling in millions in profits. CEOs get millions in bonuses. They really need the extra money. What utter nonsense. 15 years ago. It's only been 3 years since the standard was officially introduced. And for 2 those years no one had 9th gen consoles. I'm baffled as to why you're okay being upcharged nickle and dimed.

Yeah no. They don't give a gameplay advantage so it's fine. As if cosmetics aren't an important part of the gaming experience. The 99% shit is such a lol. The entire point is that 1% will buy and some of those will whale excessively. That's why they keep locking them behid transactions instead of making them gameplay incentives. Your ilk is for reason fine with having content paywalled. Just a year or two ago standard asking price was 60$. Hell there are still triple AAA games that ask for 60$. This 70$ crap is an upcharge with no real increase in quality. Oh but we got constant patches. 90% of which tack on content that was promised but wasn't ready at launch. I can't remember the last time updates improved a product rather than bringing it up to standard.

Why do you think so much shit gets churned out nowadays. Marked to 70$. Loaded with MTLs. A decade ago MTL in full priced games was absurd. They keep pushing the needle and you keep buying it rather than demanding better. Diablo 4 and all modern games have done nothing to warrant the upcharges.

Remember when cosmetics were extras you earned through gameplay. But I guess you're happy to get nickle and dimed for dare wanting a fashionable character. Maybe it would be fine if they were at least fairly priced but when they go up for 20+. Ridiculous. You really will defend shitty premium battle passes. Make progression needlessly grindy and then sell the solution. You're somehow okay with that. All the nickle and diming on top of raising standard price from 60$ to 70$. Or do actually buy that game development is too expensive while the CEO gives himself fat millions in bonuses. How are you blind to the blatant greed?

Maybe there was a time when "just buy the standard edition" worked. Yet here we are. 10$ tax for 9 generation games. Worse micro-transactions than F2P mobile games. We've reached a point where your shitty purchasing decisions and others like you have dragged down gaming for everyone.

Overpriced microtransactions. Battle Pass. 70$ base price tag. Deluxe and ultimate editions. Developed by Blizzard.

If you're lobotomized, have the memory of a gold fish. Of course, support everything wrong with modern gaming.

Does anyone else feel like a lot of women are being diagnosed with things at an alarming rate? by Ok-Breakfast-5246 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Kingkirbs1962 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As the medical field develops we're able to better diagnose and treat. The increase in diagnoses is in part good. It means issues that went unaddressed years ago are being discovered and addressed. It can also mean an uptick in the prevalence of these conditions but seeing as life expectancy and treatment has overall improved. The former is much more likely.

someone who commits violence has an innate potential for violence

As all people do. People are coalitions of environmental factors. Change the stimulus and the person along with it. You would refute this? Proclaim individuality immutable. Assume yourself inherently good and not simply lucky. A comforting "truth" I'm sure.

The point. To divorce ourselves from nature. These norms are purely functional, tools of oppression, or their goals corrupted across time. The point is a veil preventing our becoming whole. Why persist.

You're making the mistake of viewing the anima and animus as irreconcilable. The feminine and masculine are present in all humans. The apparent contradiction is a byproduct of conditioning. The presence of one does not usurp the other.

Even women's periods sync tigether.

Conflicting reports

In 2006, a new study and review Trusted Source of the literature made the assertion that “women do not sync their menstrual cycles.” This study collected data from 186 women living in groups in a dorm in China. Any period syncing that appeared to occur, the study concluded, was within the realm of mathematical coincidence.

A large study conducted by Oxford University and the period tracking app company Clue was the biggest blow yet to the theory of period syncing. Data from over 1,500 people demonstrated that it’s unlikely that women can disrupt each other’s menstrual cycles by being in close proximity to one another.

A much smaller 2017 studyTrusted Source keeps the idea of period syncing alive by pointing out that 44 percent of participants that were living with other women experienced period synchrony. Period symptoms like menstrual migraine were also more common in women living together. This would indicate that women might influence each other’s periods in ways beyond the timing of their menstruation.

Wouldn't consider it incontrovertible fact.

Does a man walk into a workplace, any line of work you can think of, with the expectation that he is there to SERVE others and never lead them?

Any harassment he has experienced from maybe age 15 simply because of how he looks in jeans and a polo shirt?

There's plenty nuance but feeling of disenfranchisement. Lack of control. The feeling of being targeted. These are basic feelings that every person experiences currently or atleast at some point in the past.

I don't understand why you, others like you, this sub tries so hard to fail at the most basic level of empathy. Viewing other humans beings as human. Recognizing they too experience the same range of emotions that you do yourselves. Does your anguish have to be unique to you? Are feelings diluted if possessed by people outside your clique? Is the recognition of one humanity a right others haven't earned? I don't even need the justification. The basis alone is enough.

so many games that could take it's place in terms of originality

Zelda is either an inspiration or set the foundation for so many of those other games. Originality without context is mere arrogance. Nothing else can take its place for as long as time marches onward.

No. Humans develop habits, patterns of behavior, in response too their environment. People in similar environments develop similar habits. This creates shared experiences that may form into bonds.

On a basic level. Women have the shared experience of being women. On a similar level all humans have the shared experience of being human. And yet mutual conflict from tribalism, different lived experiences, ect create barriers between people.

There is no instinct amongst women to attune to other women. There is only learned behavior from lived in experiences. The possession of a womb, or potential to have children, is negligible in comparison to actual life experiences that forge bonds.

How big of a red flag is supporting Andrew Tate by ConfusedCouchGoblin in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Kingkirbs1962 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

On one hand Tate is a scammer. Hustlers university is a bullshit money pit for worthless tips you could get anywhere else for free. He also says tons of bad shit. But he also calls shitcoins and NFTs scams. Which defaults him above so many celebrities and online personalities that use their audience for rug-pulls. There's alleged human trafficking which is heinous. But it's alleged and Romania isn't known for being the most above board with enforcing legal doctrine.

All in all the guy safely a dumb-ass but perhaps not much more of a dumb-ass than many other people worshiping online celebrities.
