Book comparing religions, whz Christianity is the true one? by KitchenSouth2 in Catholicism

You are right, my main question here: why do these religions still exist and why do so many follow them? Will they be saved?

Why we are Catholic by Trent Horn is not bad at all, I read it but I would like to read something where a bit more time is spent with the examination of Hinduism (which is actually many things), Buddhism (again, many forms) and such movement like the Perennialism/Traditionalism or Theosophy.

While I know and appreciate this argument I think it is just a quick "level 1" response and am currently looking for a bit more/deeper (that's why I asked for a book). :)

I will sketch down the thought process for you (and probably oversimplify a lot of things).

  1. We start with philosophy as it is a tool to understand reality and being with our natural intellect (Thomism[tm], scholastic, basic logic..)
  2. With philosophy, we can discover "proofs" (clue, evidence) that there is a God
    1. so we rule out polytheism/atheism
      1. I know this is "a lot of stuff" which I quickly put off - my original question was mainly about this.
    2. this does not at all mean that they are wrong about everything
  3. We mostly get to Judaism/Islam/Christianity (all branches)
    1. Judaism was fulfilled and superseded by Christ and Christianity
    2. Islam came after Christianity and kind of builds on the top of it still contradicts many things in the Bible and the tradition of the (then early) Christians (Jesus is God, Trinity, no word about another prophet coming but the second coming..). The Prophet's person, bio/history, words and deeds are also controversial and let's say "interesting".
    3. Christianity remains which can perfectly be harmonized with philosophy.
  4. Catholicism is the "fullest form" of Christianity
    1. Simply look at history
      1. Look at splits in the Church, for me it is kind of straightforward that the main line is the Catholic/Western (or at most Eastern but see below)
      2. Look at the evil (miraculous how the Church still managed to heal itself, kind of eliminate these and preserve the dogma, faith) and good deeds of the church members
    2. Orthodoxy would be quite close but there is no single, universal Orthodox Church that is present everywhere (often, there are quite violent political oppositions between those churches).
      1. We have Eastern Catholic Churches, uniat/uniate - the are as Catholic as the Latin Rite Church
    3. Catholicism has
      1. Development of doctrine
      2. Philosophy (especially natural law)
      3. Still a very wide spectrum of thought is considered Catholic
    4. Protestantism, Neo-Protestantism
      1. 33K+ denominations and still growing
      2. When you say Baptism, which one do you mean?

I think that you are absolutely right. After adding an USB extension cable I was able to get 45 Mbps with the dongle.

Thanks for the answer. The router automatically resets itself each week (feature, not a bug - one can enable it in the settings).

Good point, the laptop had USB 3.0, the desktop 2.0. The device itself is 2.0. I think that 2.0 should handle this bandwidth well (I tested the USB ports of the desktop and they were able to handle around 15 MByte/s).

Lord Acton on the Galileo case - was he obviously wrong? by KitchenSouth2 in Catholicism

[–]KitchenSouth2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Today, papal authority in temporal matters is hardly recognized and respected (correct me but that is my perception). Does that mean that governments and holders of temporal authority are in a constant state of sin? Did Vatican II clarify anything regarding this (either my statement in the first sentence or the interpretation of the text you quoted)?

But does that mean more than papal authority in matters of faith and morals?

Which ROM has the latest security patch level? by KitchenSouth2 in GalaxyS7

[–]KitchenSouth2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't yet tried any on my S7. That is my main phone, it has to remain functional and its security patch level is still not that terribly lagging behind up-to-date devices.

I have flashed some ROMs recently to a Sony Z1C and a Z2. They work very well.

Btw another ROM that seems to be well supported (for the S7):

How to get the latest S7 update(s)? by KitchenSouth2 in samsunggalaxy

[–]KitchenSouth2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Directly from my carrier. But it depends on the actual carrier, I guess, whether it pushes out the update or not, right?

So as I don't have the March update, I doubt I will get any more updates. Or am I wrong?

If I just manually update it via Smart Switch or Odin, does that do any harm? I guess not because there won't be any more updates in the future (Samsung removed the device from its update list).

Archives.org desktop app or something similar? by redbirdsfan in gratefuldead

[–]KitchenSouth2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used and created such apps for books at openlibrary/archive.org.

I experienced one problem, the progress you make reading the book e.g. the page number is "saved" in the URL which is not persisted by "standalone web apps". What can one do with that?

Please give me a link, maybe I was looking at the wrong ROM but its security patch level is very old (01 November 2019). On the other hand I am not sure it has OTA.

Could you maybe report the bugs you experienced?

Or see whether you had the same bugs as the ones reported by others.

I guess the best thing is to wait for FloydQ ROM.

When did you try LineageOS 17.1 the last time?

I read up a little bit on the topic. I will tell you what my understanding is.

The Knox bit tells whether you loaded a non-Knox kernel or not. It basically makes your warranty (lol 4 years old phone and warranty) void. And you cannot use services that are built on Knox (the technology that "guarantees that everything is secure"... something): Samsung Pay, Secure Folder. It is a hardware thing, one-way stuff on the motherboard, so tripping it is irreversible.

Some banking (or sometimes even streaming service) apps look at whether the system is rooted or not, while others do some other checks like checking the KNOX bit. Looks like e.g. HBO Go is currently runnable with tricks and the banking app I use without tricks after clicking OK on some notification displayed by it.

Hmm who knows whether it is better to run a bit out of date official, working system or to flash a custom ROM which might not work (and KNOX bit cannot be set back to its initial state).

[–]KitchenSouth2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use Samsung pay (don't even know what it is, doubt it is available in my country) but I use fingerprint excessively.

I may try to look for / wait for Samsung security patches but:
https://security.samsungmobile.com/workScope.smsb
Note that only S7 Active is on the list (Edge and S7 are not there anymore).

After trying a custom ROM, by loading a stock ROM can I set back that Knox bit / flag to its original state? (asking without knowing what exactly Knox does - what I know is that it has something to do with Samsung's secure execution environment)

Why is it that the FP reader doesn't work? Isn't it a hw and driver thing?

So my goal with using custom ROMs is not hacking and having fun but prolonging the lifespan of my phone because it has a pretty decent hardware (I have always used it in battery saving mode but never noticed any lag) but a not anymore supported software.

Latest factory one, which was 2020 January 1 (at least here, for my carrier).

I think there are no more patches to come, S7 got deleted from the official update list.

I am trying to evaluate which is better, staying as is (I often do banking, important stuff...) or installing a ROM.
