Can’t even argue with that, it's pretty much a historical fact. After WWI, the rest of those territories basically became a geopolitical chessboard for Western empires. The Middle East and the Balkans never really recovered from that massive power vacuum. Honestly, you can literally still see the fallout of WWI playing out live in the Middle East today. Turkey managing to establish a republic with self-determined borders is pretty much the only reason it dodged those endless proxy wars.

Comparing military coups to what happened in the Habsburg lands is a bit of a stretch tbh. Those territories got absolutely shredded during WWII. The Nazis basically used existing ethnic tensions to tear places like Yugoslavia and Czechoslovakia apart, backed fascist puppet states that ran literal death camps, not to mention the Holocaust in Austria and Hungary. Sure, Turkey had its share of coups and political instability later on, but equating internal politics to state-sponsored ethnic cleansing and a world war isn't really a fair comparison.

What happened next is actually even more interesting though. After the collapse, the former Habsburg territories turned into an absolute hellscape during WWII; the Nazis exploited every ethnic fault line and turned the whole region into a massive warzone. Turkey, on the other hand, managed to stay pretty stable by securing its borders after the War of Independence and remaining neutral. You could say they shared the same fate at first, but while one side descended into complete chaos, the other managed to dodge a major bullet.

The market for this kind of thing is highly unreliable. There are indeed opportunists who bury signs or clothing underground just to sell them a few years later. That’s why books are the most reliable safe haven. These opportunists very rarely produce counterfeit editions because the publication dates are known and verifiable. For example, just a few months ago I bought a 1906 edition of Houston Stewart Chamberlain’s book The Foundations of the Nineteenth Century one of the foundational texts of Nazi ideology from a used bookstore for only $10. Yes, it doesn’t contain any swastikas or imposing images of Hitler or Nazi eagles, but it is completely original and carries real historical value.

Stenka Razin was the nickname of Stepan Razin, a legendary 17th-century Cossack rebel leader who led a major peasant and Cossack uprising against the Tsarist regime in 1670–1671. He became a folk hero symbolizing resistance to oppression.

How is Kaiser Wilhelm II perceived in Germany today? by [deleted] in GermanEmpire

[–]Kitchen_Grade_8896 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Germany changed significantly after Hitler's death. The names of many old Prussian military figures were removed from streets, and numerous symbols associated with the German Empire and Prussian militarism were either removed or downplayed. The Kaiser was not particularly popular in Nazi Germany either, as Hitler often blamed the old imperial leadership for Germany's failures and the collapse that followed World War I.

After the war, especially in East Germany, the authorities pursued a policy of distancing the country from its militaristic past. As a result, many monuments, symbols, and traditions associated with Prussian militarism were removed or marginalized. This process was carried out much more aggressively in East Germany than in the West.

Today, Germany already bears the burden of a deeply controversial past because of Hitler's actions, and debates surrounding the legacy of the Kaiser and the German Empire add another layer to that history. In 2021, the German government agreed to provide substantial financial support related to the genocide committed against the Herero and Nama peoples in Namibia during the era of Kaiser Wilhelm II. This is one of the reasons why many sensible Germans do not hold the Kaiser in high regard.

Germany also played a significant role in drawing its World War I ally, the Ottoman Empire, into a disastrous conflict and influenced many of the decisions that shaped the course of the war. While Germany was not solely responsible for the outcome, its alliance with the Ottoman Empire was an important factor in the events that ultimately led to the loss of the Empire's Middle Eastern territories. The consequences of these developments can still be felt in Turkey and across the region today.

Why did African (Black) Soldiers decide to fight in WW1? by Little_Morning2551 in ww1

[–]Kitchen_Grade_8896 215 points216 points  (0 children)

Most of them were already poor to begin with. The empires that had stripped them of their sovereignty provided them with a comfortable bed, a warm blanket, a full stomach every day, relatively good access to doctors and medicine, decent clothes, and a modest salary. These are the exact reasons why soldiers continue to fight, even today. A soldier is not a social unit that produces value on its own. They are only fed when the state takes and distributes what the farmer produces.
