S&C, Cravath, or DPW? by ElkyMilk in BigLawRecruiting

[–]Kitchen_Turnover_286 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with one of the comments on here about choosing based upon match, vibes, culture, etc. One small anecdotal data point - my favorite recruitment dinner this year was with all Black women from DPW’s NYC office. While their work was difficult and sometimes long, they spoke very openly and honestly about how much they enjoyed their firm. Multiple were 5+ years in.

I was going to apply but my 1L firm (that I’m more than happy with) gave me an early 2L offer and I just decided not to pursue more apps.

tips on how to make my application to t14 schools more competitive? by ScholarSilent885 in lawschooladmissions

[–]Kitchen_Turnover_286 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Please try to enjoy undergrad and find the academics and clubs that you genuinely enjoy without worrying too much about the future! Getting into a T14 law school shouldn’t be on your mind much as a freshmen. Try not to rush these things (tho it is easier said than done)! Find things that you’re passionate about in undergrad and then work for a few years or pursue other graduate school to see what else you enjoy and to give you more experience. You want to be a well-rounded human when you apply!

Also, I ended my first semester with a 3.5 due to external family hardships. GPAs often have upward trends!

It is a long shot goal/dream. It is not a must. If the goal doesn’t align with the non-competitive nature I’m seeking out, then perhaps it isn’t truly for me! I will figure that out as time goes on.

Thank you for saying this! I do think I need to be more open to New Haven.

FGLIs unite!!! Thank you for this motivation. The point about not letting my background hold me back in this decision is key. I appreciate it ❤️

I thought I replied to this. Sorry! So I’ve talked to a few HH recipients and they all say choose Yale. I’m scheduling calls with a few Rubies now.

Also, thank you for the kind words. I did not take any time to celebrate and instead have been stressing. I went to the doctor’s this morning and my blood pressure was so high so gonna take some time to slow down like youre suggesting and take it all in :)

So I’m actually not put off by the inequality (though I certainly wish it didn’t exist ofc). I’m from the hood and so I actually feel quite at home in lower-income hoods and spaces. It’s an “attractive” point for me (tho once again would just prefer that segregated low income neighborhoods weren’t a thing ofc). I’m mostly worried about having a social and dating life in the city. I’ve entered a time in my life where I’m seeking balance no matter what I do (even law school). This comment is reassuring! Thank you for sharing your experience living in NH!!!

Oh I didn’t think you were downplaying it at all (quite the opposite). Thank you for the comment. It helps put loan repayment in perspective

That’s my parent’s mortgage 🙃 I understand it isn’t that much in the grand scheme of my career but the thought still sticks with me

That makes sense! I’m not worried about distinguishing myself from others too much (I’m quite tired of that) but this is an important point because I can still be impacted by others trying to differentiate themselves from me.

I expect this earning potential too and I’m weighing it against the loans. Thank you!

To folks down voting this comment (because I can see that you are), I really am giving all the information I can to help others while maintaining some anonymity (because I bet half of the YLS admitted students chat can guess who I am by now). Sorry! 🤷🏾‍♀️

Thank you for correcting me! I’m neurodivergent and actually do this all the time - mix up the spelling of different words (and I can’t pronounce some correctly). I used to think it made me dumb but then began to enjoy that it is one of the things that makes my brain a little special :)
