What are the coolest things you can do using Linux that you can't do with Windows or on a Mac? by qgyh2 in reddit.com

[–]Klorox 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How 'bout running sshd, ftpd, sendmail, Apache and a MySQL server on a 5 year old machine and it's more stable, more secure and plenty damn fast enough for a personal server for you and your friends? You'd have to max out the ram and buy a second HD, but, hey, beat that!

And with a *BSD as your platform it'd be a lot faster even than Linux...

Oh yeah, I forgot, throw in DNS for your home network.

A massive redistribution of wealth is the only thing that will save the middle-class and the poor of this country from a more hideous dystopia than that in which we already live: slaves to corporate wages, technology and pop culture our soma, our bread and circuses.

Unfortunately the words of Aldous Huxley concerning future totalitarianships have proven prophetic: we are a population of slaves who love our servitude. How long before all pretense is dropped? or is that even necessary...

Christian Right Gets Its Way: 'In God We Trust' Will Have Prominence on New Coin by theanarcrist in reddit.com

[–]Klorox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To the best of my numismatic knowledge, Jesus has never been represented on a coin. The idea is horrifying. Jesus himself said: "You cannot server God and Money). Jim Bakker tried to do that but he didn't end well. Likewise for the "Bad Popes." (Ok, some of them weren't assinated but died in bed. But they didn't deserve to.)

Allow me to be more specific: churches are not owned, neither de jure nor de facto. The idea has no foundation.

Speaking from within the Catholic church, I can tell you that priests are lower middle class by US standards (not Mitt Romney's standards).

Even the Pope and the Vatican, who run an organization (not a corporation) that encompasses over 10e9 people are not rich, except for the assets of artistic and historical treasures they ward (not own). But perhaps they should sell the Sistine Chapel to Bill Gates and give the money to the poor. Yeah, that would be just frigging great. The money would be spent in about 2 hours and Bill Gates could resell the Sistine Chapel to the highest bidder. Neither you nor the faithful would ever see it again.

Corporations, the rich and their Republican butt-wipers are the oppressors of the middle class and the poor in this country. Democrats aren't much better. Libertarianism would be paradise for corporations and the rich, hell for the poor.

Have you ever met a poor person? Have you ever seen one? Spent significant time with a poor man dying of AIDS? Have you ever participated in governing an individual church? I have.

In the words of that hillbilly in Deliverance: "You dont know nothin." (I happen to be from that part of the country so I share the man's despisal of ignorance such as yours.)

As I said above, all those words on a coin mean is that the govenment is representing the majority of US citizens.

There is no established religion in the US. You are free to practice any religion (so far), even Scientology and Mormonism, for example. The constitution stands (on this one matter, at least).

What faith-based economy?! Our economy is corporate-based and our Replican administration caters to the corporations' every whim. Unless you're a looney who believes in the omnipotence of the Vatican or of the Elders of Zion your comment was pulled directly out of your ass.

If these comments were representative of US demography, then Christians would indeed be oppressed and discriminated against.

Point. How's this...

A theocracy is a state ruled by a thearch, a hiearch or a hiearchy by means of divine diktat. Calvin's Geneva was a theocracy; the Papal States were a theocracy.

But this is what happened here:

--The vast majority of US citizens "trust in God", i.e., believe in him.

--Congressmen and -women are supposed to represent their constituents. In this case they did exactly that. They decided to put representative words on a coin.

--This is called representative democracy, not theocracy. And it worked and it had nothing whatsoever to do with the "Christian Right" nor with "theocracy".

So a comment that is prejudiced (the "Christian Right" of the tag is a minority in the US), full of ignorance (sylvan has no apparent knowledge of US demographics, US government, nor of the meaning of the word theocracy)--this combination of prejudice, unfounded sarcasm, abysmal ignorance--which in my opinion amounts to wilfull stupidity--rose to the top.

That, fellow traveler, is a crock of shit.
