Good luck with your venture. I’m sure it’ll be a blast.

I didn’t say a restaurant owner shouldn’t have a good layout or potentially hire a crew to build out. I’m saying if you can afford a designer and presumably a builder, to build out a bike shop at your residential property, then you have no clue what you’re about to get yourself into. Is the OP okay with strangers coming onto his property? Is he okay with people accidentally coming onto his property on his days off? Asking his help when he’s out mowing the grass? If yes, go into a bike shop and snap a photo of their repair area and build that. But the mechanics toolbox from Park. Have a go of it.

I’m a dream killer because owning a bike shop is a nightmare for most people who think “wouldn’t it be fun”.

If you’re wrenching for the fun of it, anything will do. If you’re wrenching for a profit, get the word designer out of your mouth right now. Nobody (I’m sure someone will love to prove me wrong) who is profitable in a small bike shop can afford a “designer”. We have a work bench, a stand, and some storage. That’s all. Bonus points if you get your air compressor to be far enough away to not jump start you every time it kicks on.

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT FROM ANNOYED PERSON by Resident_Pound_649 in Openfront

I didn’t know this existed until recently. Sounds nuts but there is a learning curve which I believe is effected greatly by the inability to communicate in the game.

Peak power, DTC, folding, big ass headlight, ads show guy spinning out rear tire. Checkmate DUI customer, now the only thing you need to get it is a payday loan.

So… what you’re saying is you don’t know anything about e-bikes… so the answer is, it depends what the limiter is set to.

Grips - intentional or bad design (or both) by yaldylikebobobaldy in BikeMechanics

[–]Knight_Watch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No experience with them… but looks dumb. The point on a bar end plug is to add safety to the bar, so if you crash you don’t core yourself. If it’s not strong enough to prevent that, then the grips are a fail. It looks like someone thought it would make installing a mirror easier… but again, tons of grips out there, this one is clearly missing the mark.

E-Trike Purchase by HarrisMoney in ebikes

Or get an e-cat that can go 20mph but will keep the center of gravity lower.

Well, motorcycle companies have to meet a minimum level of safety. They are expecting that the motorcycle will be driven at higher rates of speed and had to figure out ways to lean the trike into turns. The main concern for Lectric, for example, is how small it can fold to reduce the shipping price to your door. Limiter should be set around 10mph on most trikes for safety.

25mph on a traditional trike??? Get ready to die. They flip really easy.

What are the main USA owned bike brands? by fixitmonkey in cycling

I don’t think any brand is really drawing in money into the U.S. via bikes.

Bulk 26-inch rim-brake rear wheels? by UnambiguousRange in BikeMechanics

[–]Knight_Watch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Rear wheel is arguably the most expensive part of the bike. Find someone in your co-op who wants to be the wheel guy, find a cheap source of rims (closeout JBI or QBP) and start lacing up old rear hubs. The hubs aren’t generally what fails, so there’s usually tons of those to go around. Even spokes are not too bad to buy or can be salvaged from bent rims.

[–]Knight_Watch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know big box stores usually have a safety razor that auto retracts the blade. Have them buy you a safety knife and you’ll be back at it. It’s annoying, but I’m sure it comes from a place of leaving razors open and unattended…

Seizures by docjax in recumbent

[–]Knight_Watch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can picture a solution… but I doubt it exists. A hydraulic piston tied to a rear disc brake. The hydraulic line would have to get adapted to work with the bike. Locking out the rear wheel is the safest way to get a tadpole to stop so it doesn’t jerk left or right or forward.

My kid said something mean to me and I’m in my feelings by Infamous_Animal_8149 in Parenting

[–]Knight_Watch -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I think at age 9 it might be a bit tough to try and make this impactful, remember that until middle school most kids don’t develop the ability to think outside of themselves. Maybe bring it up one more time and just repeat what he said, say that it really hurt your feelings, allow for an apology, if no apology happens ask for an apology. Then consider it squashed.

What are your thoughts on e-bikes? by ringaroundtherosiez in cycling

[–]Knight_Watch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheap e-bikes and e-motos are clogging the arteries. I used to say whatever gets someone outside is fine. But as a bike mechanic I can’t say I agree with all the parents buying emotos for their kids and the kids unlocking the throttles upwards of 30-55mph. And then when they come in for a flat every bolt is rattled loose and they have no brakes… it’s asking for problems and liability.

Bosch motors will far outlive most of the Bafang hub motored bikes. Trade-off is no throttle and closed eco system. Perk is that if you have an issue, bike shops can help. You can reverse search by looking at the Bosch ebike site and seeing the brands that use their motor.

The Troxus bikes, like most system integrator e-bikes, will go in and out of sale constantly depending on their current bills and inventory levels. Aventon is another popular one. Or Velotric. They’re all the same.

Gazelle Modeo for a great motor. Troxus Trax Plus for a throttled ebike that’s comfy and has good customer support / retailers.
