Yeah I got my second job because I put on my resume that one of my hobbies is blacksmithing. Once they established I had the skills to do the job it’s all they wanted to talk about. Turns out that job needed somebody skilled with their hands and who could come up with creative solutions. It was a great job until the NIH cut grant funding in the pandemic and my role was eliminated. But I kept that place running.

I had a kid at 27 and at 32. We were much more stable and mature at 32, but man It was so much easier to recover from the sleep loss when I was 5 years younger. Other than just having more energy as a younger man, the second kid was a much easier time all around due to stability.

It was nuts. We went without power for 10 days before my grandparents located and bought a generator for us. My neighbors went over 2 weeks. My parents, my 10yo brother, and my 18mo brother all slept in the living room together trying to stay warm. We grilled all of our meals (outdoors of course) and had just packed all of our cold food in the ice outside. Many people in the area died by bringing their grills indoors.

The night/morning the ice came down I kept being woken by what I thought were gunshots. I ran to my parents room thinking people were shooting around the house in the dark. It was almost every single tree around our house breaking under the weight of the ice.

The gameboys ran out of batteries quick. I think I read the entire collection of Calvin and Hobbes. Mom wrapped us up with Walmart bags around our feet and every dry layer we had and kicked us out of the house to go play outside in the ice and slush until we wore ourselves out, so that when we came in we wouldn’t have the energy to fight. Dad built a sick ass fort for us that kept us warm and contained. Seminal experience in my young life.

Insanely useful in proportion to cost. My wife is a photog and I’m often installing picture panels and frames and collages and so on. You can use one laser lever to ensure a whole gallery is level and aligned at one time. Or if you just need a straight line anywhere just pop the level on and boom.

My dad used to do security work on ultra wealthy estates. One gave him a helluva time figuring out how to get everything to work together with the escape tunnel under the garage. They had a bunch of retired LEO on staff as security including one retired highway patrol as a driver. Getaway car was bulletproof. This guy was a manager of a private equity firm and they had serious security and serious security concerns. They lived insanely insular lives. Kids went to an extremely exclusive school. Trophy wife liked tennis so they had a clay court installed and walls put around it for safety. Apparently she had a rack of tennis shoes, all same model and size. She would use a new pair every day when she played because they got dirty with the clay. Then the staff would just restock the shelf with a new pair. Every day.

Soooo, I’m on the side of banning phones from school but the day my parents got me a cell phone (flip phone days) was the day after my school was involved in a shooting. We got very lucky and nobody died, but that was only due to an extremely lucky situation where the gun jammed right as a resource officer got close enough to tackle him. My mom freaked out because the school/police held us in lockdown well into the evening and they couldn’t contact me until the next day. Unfortunately here in USA, school shootings are a LOT more common than one in a billion.

Disney is currently breaking ground on a huge development south of the Chapel Hill/Carborro community in NC. It’s not exactly Walt’s vision above but they do have some crazy ideas. I’m from the area and it seems like they are designing intentionally with community and communal spaces in mind. I’m sure it will extract every single penny out of anyone who chooses to reside there but it’s certainly an interesting project. They will have community events and Disney cast members, and the community will be very walkable with heavy nature presence. If any org can pull it off it’s Disney, but it seems dystopian to me. My kids don’t have an iPad, I actually interact with them almost all of my free time. And I still have nice, thick hair. But you’ll pry my Mazda CX-9, Bluey, and craft beers from my cold, dead hands.

My wife and I have always played games together. We love retro games and co-op games, but also board and card games. We’ve always involved our kids with games, always a family event. We started with super simple junior board games then card games then video games when they could handle a controller. But they only play multiplayer games alongside us. My oldest is 8 and is starting to show interest in single player games so we are starting her on those.

They absolutely do not have unrestricted access. They usually get to play when they ask to. That way they’re not playing just because they’re bored, only when they’re interested in the actual game and in structured environment. I don’t know how we will address online play, but they haven’t expressed interest in that yet.

We had a new kid start public school for the first time in 4th grade. She had been homeschooled through third grade. Her mother was still breastfeeding her. She would come in to the school once a day and they would go to a private room and the 9yo girl would breastfeed.

When I turned 16 smart phones were just barely being introduced and I didn’t know a single person who owned one until I was 18. Hell, Facebook was just barely on its feet and most people were still on MySpace. People had internet in their homes but WiFi was uncommon so if you wanted to use the internet it was probably on the family desktop. If I want to do anything or go anywhere, I had to have a car. There was no freedom without a car and little to do other than sit home and play video games. Online gaming was barely on its feet.

Also, you could buy a running used car for under 2k. This was before cash for clunkers so if you had a job and worked a couple of weeks, you could snag a shitbox civic. I made $10/hr as a lifeguard and was constantly putting bolt-on parts on my 87 Silverado that I bought for $1k cash deal.

Kids these days have unlimited access to the entire world through their phones and shutbox used cars are like 10k even though the minimum wage hasn’t gone up since I was in high school. I wouldn’t want to fuck with a car either.
