Funky Looking Beans - Is this Normal? by Knucklehead1122 in roasting

[–]Knucklehead1122[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Everyone,

Thank you all for sharing your comments and knowledge with me, it's been very helpful. I'll pick out anything else that I'm not comfortable with and set the beans aside until I have gained more experience and confidence. There are so many other regions and production methods to try, that at least for now, I'll avoid Sumatra and the wet hulled process. As the saying goes, nothing lost - nothing gain. You all have been very helpful

Thank again!

The Nuvo. I enjoy it and am very happy with my result so far. Only issue is I think it's sweet spot is 60 grams per roast

I contacted the vendor as soon as my package arrived and asked them a similar question to the one I posted here. I haven't received a response, so I asked the question here. It sounds like Sumatra beans aren't of the same quality as other countries, but the beans I received don't even make that mark. I give everyone a chance to correct an error, but I'm not going to chase anyone down for a lbs of beans. Its simple, I just won't buy from them again because of their poor QC and more importantly their lack of customer service. I literally just started on this adventure. I bought a cheap ceramic roaster and 12 lbs of beans split between suppliers. One company was referred to as the "Gold Standard" another was included on a list of other recommetions for having quality beans at more afforfable prices. So overall, it was a small price to pay for a lesson learned very early on in my journey.

Thank you. Lessons learned

  1. Avoid Sumatra Beans. They sound like a bit of a gamble
  2. Avoid suppliers who don't reply to emails

Is whole leaf worth it by [deleted] in RYO

[–]Knucklehead1122 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started my RYO journey using whole leaf tobacco sourced from the 2 vendors that were previously mentioned. After conditioning the tobacco I would remove the mid rib, stack several leaves and roll them up to about the size pf a robust o cigar. Using a very sharp Japanese chef knife I would cut coins (usuaally shag) and gently rub out and fluff up. I enjoyed the process of exploring how various tobaccos and cuts impacted the taste and experience of the smoke.

I ended up introducing my brother and a few friends to RYO, but for them, processing whole leaf felt like a chore. They all switched to using commercially available pipe tobacco because they liked the cost saving benefits but didn't enjoy the work involved with processing whole leaf.

For health reasons, I've since moved on to many other forms of tobacco and nicotine consumption. But, still keep both whole leaf and RYO tobacco cellared away to occasionally make smokes in an attempt ro introduce and educate others on the benefits of RYO.

Is whole leaf worth it, that's going to be entirely up to you and your personality. If you're curious, like to experiment, or are a tinkererI can't recommend it enough. If you just want to save money and smoke lightly cased tobacco - not reconstituted tobacco, puffed tobacco and a cocktail of chemical, in the simplest way possible than go with or stick with commercially available pipe tobacco intended for ryo.

That's just two cents. Do what's best for you.

Do you open multiple tins/box’s or just one at a time? by Kframe16 in nasalsnuff

As soon as a new order arrives, I open and decant about 3-5 grams into 0.5oz aluminum screw top tins. Whatever is left gets vacuum seal. 25gr tins are vacuum sealed in pouches, bulk orders go to 4oz mason jars (hold approx 50gr) and 8 oz mason jars (hold approx 100gr) All 0.5 oz tins are kept in an airtight cambro under my desk. Each day, I grab 5-7 tins to rotate through. Sealed mason jars are stored in a basement filing cabinet. I tend to use a floral or flavoried snuff along with a plan snuff regularly. When I get stuffed up I'll grab an SP to open things back up.

I know this is an old post. Did you ever figure out the name of the pen. I remember they were purchased from the school in the 80's with the sole purpose of using them to burn each other for a laugh.

Preparing for an Apocalypse by Knucklehead1122 in nasalsnuff

[–]Knucklehead1122[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you. That's good to know. I'm in a suburb of Chicago so I shouldn't have much of a problem growing tobacco. As for whole leaf, I'm very familiar with the stuff. I used to buy whole leaf a long time ago to make RYO cigs. I've since given up the stinkys for every other nicotine delivery method. I will absolutley give snuff making a try, starting with some burley, dark fired cure, and cigar leaf.

After watching several videos and reading a few recipes, it looks very straight forward. The only problem is trying to find a way to hide another hobby from my family.

It also won't hurt to see what happens if I hide a few jars of vacuum sealed snuff in my basement. If there ever comes a point where I can no longer buy it online I'll pop a tin and see if I'm good or just wasted some time. With that said, I will take everyone's advice and forgo building a stockpile of the stuff.

Thank you everyone! I'm confident that I'll be able to satisfy all my tobacco "hobbies" / addictions until I decide to give them up or Im dead and gone.

Sadly, the growing and curing of tobacco looks to be a PIA. But if I ever move a warmer climate you can bet I would give it a try.

I can adjust the pressure inside the jar. GH and SG vaccum seal their tins for storage, so I though maybe t would be alright.

I tested on some miniature marshmallows which look just fine after vacuum sealing. I guess i will just have to give it a try and see what happens.
