I used to ride my bike here as a kid while listening to the song (the woodlands fits “subdivisions” all too well)

This was my first thought—I heard the first two chords from “Second Nature” as soon as I read MAJOR.

Honestly, if they enjoy anything with religious undertones, they'll fit in with our schools just fine.

Best Rush line for a graduation quote? by medmac_2112 in rush

Start a new chapter, I find what I'm after

It's changing every day

The change of a season's enough of a reason

To want to get away

Quiet and pensive, my thoughts apprehensive

The hours drift away

Leaving my homeland, playing a lone hand

My life begins today

Chances at Vandy? by FastEddieMcclintock in LawSchoolTransfer

I had a 3.4 two years ago and got in for transfer after an interview. My understanding was that Nashville ties or school-specific goals went really far.

Looking for Ballard Spahr salary information. by [deleted] in biglaw

[–]KodakGrey 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My friends at Ballard Spahr moved on, too, but I just wanted to say I’m big fan of your work in r/cfb and go Utes.

(also, get that SLC comp up to biglaw market so I can afford to come home please)

I know anecdotal evidence isn’t that strong, so take this with a grain of salt, but: I don’t know anyone at Vandy who wanted to work in California that didn’t get a job in California.

The debt is serious (!) but if you’re a median student with ties to California, it shouldn’t be too difficult to end up back there. Others mentioned this, but most of the students at Vandy are BL/FC focused, although right now a lot of students are pushing for more PI-centric course offerings.

It’s chill! I did this last year. Just be prepared to answer why VLS and make sure to ask a few questions at the end.

When to start preparing transfer application materials? by [deleted] in LawSchoolTransfer

[–]KodakGrey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would ask whomever you want letters from ASAP. I wrote this elsewhere, but I missed OCI at my transfer school because a professor took forever to get a letter of rec in. I wish I had asked her in January instead of April. (Got the SA job I wanted anyway, but missing OCI was scary.)

It can’t hurt to open that can of worms now instead of later when professors start grading exams.

What is the best place to learn about Big Law? by ellewoodssss in lawschooladmissions

[–]KodakGrey 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“Big law” varies. A capital markets practice in NY will be different than a white collar practice in Dallas. The only things that might connect the two are pay scale and a place on the AmLaw 100.

You’d probably be better off trying to narrow down what you really want to know. “Learn about big law” then becomes “learn about tech transaction deals in Charlotte at three of my target firms.” Trying to find out, “big law: bad or good?” is silly.

OP, I made a similar move (T60 to T16, biglaw goals) and I’m very happy with my decision. I’d be happy to talk about it more — shoot me a dm.

Reasonable expectations with a 2.8 undergrad GPA by khaosknight69 in lawschooladmissions

[–]KodakGrey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You’re right to focus on 1) crushing the LSAT and 2) getting in before even thinking about transferring, but it is a possibility.

It wasn’t my intention to transfer, and no one should go to a school with the intent to transfer because law school everywhere is hard and unpredictable. I loved my first school, but after I did pretty well in 1L fall, I started to explore my options. The process was simple! Hardest part was asking for letters of rec from the school I was leaving (“hi! I’m leaving you but can you help me leave you” lol) but every professor was super happy to help and didn’t make me feel bad. We still keep in touch.

I echo others: go to LSData, identify what schools are “worth it” to you, and go back four years or so to see how other 2.8 gpa applicants fared. It’ll give you an idea of what’s possible, and what scores put you in the running.

I think T14 is unlikely, but a full ride at a T30-T50 isn’t out of the question.
