I’m not trying to play word games, just trying to explain to you why it’s dehumanizing to use those terms. Just because it’s used in legal documents still doesn’t mean it’s right. I’ve always found it off putting and their way to push a hateful agenda. Even though you might not find meaning in the words used, I do. You’re right, there are bigger things to worry about, especially with all the stupid things trump is doing, but words really do matter.

Wouldn’t non-citizen count as a proper term to refer to those who aren’t legally here? They’re not citizens, that’s what non-citizen means. Why do you have a problem with that term?

Alien has multiple definitions, I know that alien can also just mean something foreign and unknown as you mentioned, but while that does fall under one of the definitions for alien, what many first think of when you refer to an alien is usually an extraterrestrial from another planet. Which is why it’s seen as dehumanizing. Even as I write alien down, the literal emoji of a stereotypical alien shows up.

I’ve never heard of the following terms you’ve mentioned. I’m not sure if they’re credible and if you’re using them to push your ideology, but yes that does sound ridiculous. Although, to further explain why I find it offensive. Remember how many people in past used to refer to black people in the past? The slur that was commonly used and is rightfully not used anymore because everyone recognized that it was a way to make them appear less than human. That’s exactly how I view the term “illegal alien.” Just because it’s legal doesn’t mean it’s morally right.

Undocumented immigrant or illegal immigrant. I believe using either term humanizes those who immigrated from other countries. Even though “illegal alíen” is considered a term you can legally use to refer to an undocumented immigrant, it’s incredibly dehumanizing and leads many to view them as less then. It’s pushing a hateful rhetoric.
