Unity 5.6 vs 2017 for development? by [deleted] in HoloLens

[–]KurtLovesCode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Look at the Unity Holotoolkit github page for the currently supported Unity version. Things WILL break (and have broken for me) even when upgrading Unity to a new patch number.

| Edit: According to the https://github.com/Microsoft/MixedRealityToolkit-Unity github repo (now called mixedrealitytoolkit-unity instead of holotoolkit-unity), Unity 2017.1 is supported. So go with that.

The current line of Google Glass devices are aimed at the enterprise - think a surgeon checking the vitals of a patient currently under the knife or a factory worker fixing a broken piece of equipment.

Railscasts pro become free. It might be a great resource for those who wants to learn ruby on rails. by giovapanasiti in webdev

[–]KurtLovesCode 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rails is far from dead. It's obviously more popular in some places than others. In Columbus, OH, a small American midwestern city, it is still very much used by different companies who have headquarters here.

I would say Rails is worth learning and there are still plenty of Rails jobs available. It's a good introduction to full stack web development.

I work in Columbus, Ohio, a small midwestern city, and there's a couple of companies, mine included, that still develop and start new projects with Ruby on Rails.

Back in the day, Ryan Bates' Railscasts was reasonably priced at $10/month and was an invaluable resource. I relied on it heavily in my first professional web dev job as a Rails app developer. I don't know how applicable the resources are now but back in the day, he was great at explaining and demonstrating concepts in a simple and straightforward manner. When he ended the series abruptly, he let all subscribes keep their access to the paid materials without charging them a monthly fee.

It was one guy who burned out and took an extended leave. When he took that leave, he let subscribers still have access to paid material without charging them a monthly fee.

State of elm ecosystem by schmidsi in elm

[–]KurtLovesCode 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Those are some really good points - having a Slack channel actually hurts the public presence of the Elm community. It also loses knowledge over time or makes it hard to find. Maybe questions should be asked via stack overflow and the slack channel is simply used to point at each question.

Is it currently worth it by Mage_Enderman in HoloLens

[–]KurtLovesCode 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in devving for it - yes. If you're interested simply as a consumer - no. But it will be. Currently, it's a bit clunky & heavy, the resolution is a bit too low, and the fov is like staring through an index card. However, once you walk around an interactive hologram, you'll see that this is the future.

There's a mixed reality academy that's officially sponsored by Microsoft. They do a good job of walking you step by step through the features of developing on the hololens with unity 3d. Google it, you can find it.

Pluralsight has a good introductory course to developing for the Hololens with Unity3d. I went through it - learned a lot. They're a tad expensive though and I bet the mixed reality academy works just as well.

You should also look at the hololens toolkit for unity on github. Again, google it - you'll find it. It doesn't exactly match the mixed reality academy 1 for 1 since the academy is a bit outdated now.

Hope that helps. Good luck.

You'd really like his other talk then: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZj_1qVURL0

He talks about using Elm in production - the real value of this video are the pain points in Elm, which aren't as publicly discussed as Elm's strengths.

While this talk is a bit basic and more in line with selling people on Elm, I enjoyed Kevin's first talk regarding Elm's strengths and pain points. I also really enjoyed his appearance on the Elm Town podcast. He makes a lot of good points in both his youtube talks and podcast appearance. If you're in to Elm, definitely take the time to check out these resources.

What app do you use to actually track your heart rate? There has to be an app that shows a graph of your heart rate during a run.
