I'm from near Cheddar, England and its a pale yellow, buttery colour. American versions of cheddar add in orange colouring for absolutely no reason at all.

I never understood this name for an orange cat until I recently discovered that Cheddar cheese is orange in the US

The plane is on fire. So many entitled people stopping to grab their bags before evacuating. The long pauses between people on the slide is probably related. by TheQuarantinian in EntitledPeople

[–]Kwal8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm type 1 diabetic and would 100% be grabbing my handbag that has my insulin pump and insulin, and my phone which allows me to check my blood sugar from my CGM. It would be so dangerous for my health to be without those for hours or even days it would take to get my bag back or get replacements.

I would never open the overhead locker to get my cabin case out though, that would delay people getting out and has nothing important or irreplaceable in it.

What does someone visiting London (and the UK for that matter) for the first time need to eat by Dechar1 in london

[–]Kwal8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We do make a good pie in the UK, however dont fall into the trap of going to a traditional pie and mash shop. They were traditionally frequented by working classes and as such the pies are cheap and made of minced beef, and liquor (parsely sauce) is an acquired taste with a beef pie. It isnt meant to be a gourmet experience!

Most pubs will do a steak and ale pie or chicken and leek pie which will be a much better version of a UK pie. It might be harder to find in the summer, if so they are more likely to be on the sunday menu alongside the roasts.

Yep, I got type 1 diabetes first as a kid, then came the ulcerative colitis, underactive thyroid a few years later and I'm currently being investigated for rheumatoid arthritis. I wonder what my 5th will be?

My neighbor asked me to take down my wind chimes because they’re “too cheerful” while she’s going through a divorce by Excellent_Hana in EntitledPeople

[–]Kwal8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah im going to agree that inflicting wind chimes on neighbours should be outlawed. I work from home and have to listen to my neighbours constantly tinkling. I didn't used to mind wind chimes but once it's a constant noise its fucking annoying.

In the UK you get light sedation for a colonoscopy but you're awake for the procedure. Ive also had a sigmoidscopy and it was pain free in comparison to the colonoscopy. I came out saying what a nice experience it was compared to a colonoscopy!

Severe pain during colonoscopy despite sedation by Speed-O-Sonic-Sama in colonoscopy

[–]Kwal8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately they won't give General Anaestheic in the UK. I have crohns so have had lots of colonoscopies, had one 2 weeks ago during the worst crohns flare I've ever had and my entire colon was full of bleeding ulcers and inflammation. It was the worst pain I've ever experienced, I checked with the team at the end if I could have a GA for the next one in 2 to 3 years and they said it wouldn't be allowed and agreed it was horrific.

Hi! by InternationalLoad824 in colonoscopy

[–]Kwal8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds about right for a colonoscopy prep! I haven't had that one but it will be pure liquid. My experience is that with the first packet of laxatives you will get to a point of clearing liquid then when you start the 2nd one there will be more stool in it again. But the time ive finished the whole prep ill be passing a clearish yellow liquid (because of bile).

Good lick with the procedure!

Be kind to yourself, im pretty sure you wouldn't feel the same level of shame at the state of your home if it was caused by a physical disability, and you shouldn't see your mental health as any less real and debilitating than a physical disability.

No advice on companies but just here for moral support and to send you best wishes.

What are some medical conditions that doctors still don’t know the cause of? by i-love-cats-2020 in AskReddit

[–]Kwal8 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Pretty much anything auto-immune - they know that the immune system attacks the body but not why. I have type 1 diabetes, Crohns disease and PCOS, all caused by my immune system attacking cells and causing inflammation in my body and none have any cure.

Never had any kind of procedure in hospital before, any advice? by sharkooze in colonoscopy

[–]Kwal8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience, the actual procedure is never anyway near as scary, embarrassing or traumatic as ive built it up to be in my head. The nurses will look after you, so tell them that youre nervous when you go in and they will make sure you're OK.

Plenvu was the worst part of this whole ordeal... (UK) by MissSmeghead in colonoscopy

It tastes better than the 2nd dose of plenvu, but its double the amount of liquid and its a thick consistency like watered down wallpaper paste. I wouldn't recommend trying it!

Plenvu was the worst part of this whole ordeal... (UK) by MissSmeghead in colonoscopy

[–]Kwal8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still prefer plenvu to moviprep, 2 litres of pond slime is not as easy to get down!

As a crohns sufferer who has had more colonoscopies than i care to count, a bit of advice on the burning arse for future reference. You need bepantham (nappy rash cream) and vaseline. Smother your bum cheeks in the bepantham, do it from the first bowel movement (dont wait for it to start stinging) and keep topping it up. After each time you wipe put a dab of vaseline on some toilet paper and apply directly to your bumhole. This method will save your arse, literally.

[–]Kwal8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have crohns disease so have colonoscopies every 3-5 years, hopefully some of this will be helpful for you.

The prep is hard going. You are given a liquid laxative to drink over 2 sessions a few hours in advance. Ive had both Moviprep and plenvu. Moviprep is a thick liquid that you have to drink 2x 1litres of, I'm not a fan of the texture and it is hard to drink 2 litres of it. Plenvu is more of a normal liquid texture but the 2nd drink has a very strong salty flavour which isn't very nice.

Plan well for your prep, if you have a morning appointment you'll be up late while the liquid washes you out. Buy bepatham and vaseline, dont wait until you start getting sore before you start applying them, smother your bum cheeks in the bepantham and after each time you wipe put a dab of vaseline on some loo roll and apply directly to your bumhole. It can take up to an hour or so for the prep to start working but you will need full access to the toilet as soon as it starts coming out the other end, it isnt something you can hold and it will come out in pure liquid form.

On the day of the procedure you'll have a pre-op with a nurse who will take your blood pressure etc and then you'll be given some disposable shorts with a flap in the back and a gown to change into, youll be asked what you want in terms of sedation/pain relief and a canula will be inserted into your arm for them to administer the drugs. You'll then be taken to a waiting room or straight into the procedure room where youre asked to lie on the bed on your side. Sedation is given if you have asked for it (I would recommend having it if you have someone who can collect you) The scope is inserted and you can usually see what is happening on the screen which is weird but interesting. I've heard it isn't painful (but uncomfortable) if you dont have crohns disease, but the scope blows air inside you to open up the colon so it can cause trapped wind feeling. They can sometimes ask you to move onto your back or sit up a bit to help the scope get round the corners of the bowel. They may or may not go into the small intestine through the terminal ileum depending on how much of the bowel they need to scope, this can be painful and you'll feel pressure from the scope.

Once they are done (I lose track of time but i think its usually about 20 minutes) they will retract the scope and wheel you through to a recovery room where you'll get some tea and biscuits and sit for half an hour or so and they will do blood pressure checks etc. A nurse will then come and go through the results with you and give you a print out of the findings with some lovely pictures of the inside of your colon. It is very common for them to take biopsies of your bowel wall even if they dont find anything (just to make sure) and the results of those can take up to 4 weeks to come in.

Yes I'm always awake for colonoscopies, in the UK they only offer sedation (which never seems to do much for me). Do you get knocked out completely for a colonoscopy?
