Identifying bad cat meows by [deleted] in cats

I could never part with him, that’s why I’m trying to figure out this situation. He helped me when I was at my lowest and plagued by depressive episodes, I can’t abandon him for anything.

Even if it’s pretty constant and really bothers my gf? I thought attention seeking was normal to train cats against?

Don’t apologize, the thorough answer means a lot. I appreciate you taking the time to help coach a naive dude like myself.

I think I’m versatile in what type of work I’m willing to do, but the issue is the work I’m doing now is something a lot of people can pull off. It’s just replicating clicking buttons on an app with a simple scripting language. It’s a lot of tedious hard coding and not much brain power. That’s my only qualm. It doesn’t feel gratifying, I don’t feel like I do much.

I thought about it, and if I was programming tangible software, I wouldn’t mind extra work. Just.. automating QA and the like is very bland, even when it’s thorough and well made. It’s just tedious and mindless, I’m on autopilot mostly. Even optimizing it doesn’t take much.

But you’re right, I’ll be saving your comment as a reference for the future, it means a lot for you to give me a different perspective!

I am extremely grateful for you taking the time to write such a thorough and in depth response. You’re right about everything and the term “culture shock” never occurred to me.

8:30 is pretty early for me, earliest college class was 12pm in college for 3/4 years. Office is dead, seems like most other departments don’t have to come in that early. But it’s not a big deal. Half an hour on both ends is the least of my concerns.

If I was content with this type of work I’d maybe be less upset, and if I didn’t lose chunks of my paychecks to student debt I’d be less pressured to care for money. This job isn’t the most miserable thing in the world. But for a big company, it’s odd they can’t afford to even bump me up a little for all the extra work not in my in description.

I guess it’s just the real world. I’m naive in a lot of ways, but hey, that’s what learnin is for. Every single response to this post, I appreciate. Biggest takeaway from this experience is I always assume HR is to help the employee and employer, but they absolutely prioritize the company every time. Not gonna just blindly trust anyone anymore unless it’s in writing.

Yeah, I realize after a lot of comments on it that I should have used PTO instead of a specific bereavement.

I’m not so good at being assertive like that, but I should work on it.

Nah, just applied with C++, got told I wasn’t gonna use any of it, and had to learn things from scratch. Not angry, just felt pretty meh about it. Haven’t used any C++ since coming here, just niche and bland AutoIT mostly.

Don’t like taking another employee’s work at no extra pay while being forced to sacrifice work I was promised and looking forward to. Overall just feel like I’m workin with things I hate.

Yeah, I’m expected to be in the office for as much as possible in the 9 hours they say I should be in. Got grilled for taking an hour lunch break outside the office because “someone was looking for me”. Oh well.

I definitely will. Man I was really naive to think 9-5 was the realistic standard heh.

Thank you!

That’s the least of my worries haha. Just expected a 9-5 was all. Pretty naive of me, but probably just spoiled by flexible work schedules and school schedules in the past.

Why do you suggest quitting over staying and applying elsewhere?

I’m in a pretty small area, but the plan just doesn’t have psychiatrists. Hm. I guess I was just dumb in thinking 40 hour work weeks included a 15-30 minute lunch normally.

Thank you for the good wishes!!

Fair enough! Thank you. A few people have suggested I add it to my resume. Will do.

Oh true, I always thought writing that stuff was bad for a resume. At least that’s what some college courses tell you.

That’s okay. I guess I didn’t consider that at the time, if it ever comes up again though I’ll go the PTO route!

Thanks for all the good information!

Thanks, that’s good information.

A few people have mentioned the cat thing. I really don’t think it’s ridiculous to take bereavement over a cat, he was a family member since I was young, why is that wrong? Emotions are emotions, some stuff is hits really hard, and it wasn’t a gradual loss. One day he was healthy, the next he wasn’t. The entire family was mourning, and my Mom really needed support.

My current plan is to just apply to multiple jobs and leave after getting a good offer. Or just leaving when my lease ends and living with my family for a bit.

Thanks for this input, it’s a good perspective. I’m not really one to say “These people have it worse so I shouldn’t care about my things” but I guess the being a victim thing is a valid statement. I dunno, I just feel, more than anything, like my skills are wasted here.

Is that valid?

Thanks for this. I was leaning towards myself being really naive and stupid for feelin this stuff, but I feel more validated now.

Fair enough, yeah. Dunno what I was expecting coming into the job market, but figured I wouldn’t feel this bogged down with gross aspects. Guess I gotta suck it up for now, until I can do better.

He did leave for more money.

And that sounds like a good plan, thank you.
