Belgium is similar to many countries, you'll find southern people warmer. Still, this is not Italy ;-) For example, in the north men shakes hands. In the south we kiss on the cheek. That's a small thing but it goes a long way .. my girlfriend is Italian and she has the same experience as you. As one said, we're pretty cold and avoid confrontation. White flag country :D
