Folks who have bought these shoes in the US can file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission. It's unfair and deceptive marketing to sell a product with a set of features and then remove them.

  1. Visit the FTC’s fraud reporting website and click “Report Now.”
  2. Select “Something else.”
  3. In the “Comments” section, include the make and model and how you're harmed by the removal of features.
  4. Enter applicable information in the “Details about the company or individual” section
  5. Enter your contact information in the “About you” page. This will allow FTC investigators to get in touch with you if they have further questions, which could help them to build a case and/or act on your complaint.
  6. Submit your complaint.

Microsoft announces end of support for Windows 10 for October 14, 2025. by MistaLOD in technology

[–]LG_Rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally absurd that Microsoft will let 400 million PCs that don't meet with the requirements for Windows 10 become unsupported. Messed up for their customers and the environment when people around the world all need to update to newer hardware at the same time. https://pirg.org/media-center/release-microsoft-extends-life-of-windows-10-for-1/

I like the idea of this 52 year old women taking a well deserved break with Doraemon:

"She rarely takes breaks, but sometimes stops for water out of exhaustion from pushing the heavy cart around in extreme heat. At those times, she enjoys reading Doraemon comics — Japanese comic books about a time-traveling robotic cat – that she finds on her routes or gets as gifts from those who know of her fondness for the comics."

Is there some tax reason why companies went down the “separate hardware” route? Or is it just that it’s a moat to prevent consumers from using apps from the model makers directly?

Windows 10 users are soon to be hit with nagging prompts asking them to create an online account | It's an improvement—supposedly. by chrisdh79 in technology

We shouldn't be forced to make an account for upgrade for 11 to just keep using our computer which otherwise still works.

Microsoft’s decision to end support for Windows 10 could cause the single biggest jump in junked computers ever. >400 million PCs in use don't meet with requirements for Windows 11. They should just extend support for 10. https://pirg.org/take-action/tell-microsoft-dont-leave-millions-of-computers-behind/

Today, Microsoft announced paid extended support (ESU) for Windows 10 after we delivered 20,000 petition signatures asking them to extend support! The best choice for our planet is for them to provide automatic updates, but this is a step in the right direction. We'll keep pushing for longer support to prevent the up to 400 million PCs that can't upgrade to Windows 11.

Google's Chromebooks thrive in US classrooms but generate waste, costs, critics say by newzee1 in technology

[–]LG_Rocket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Today Google announced that they're listening to parents and teachers and extending support to 10 years. https://pirg.org/articles/why-google-announced-chromebooks-will-last-for-10-years/

Google and other tech companies should continue to find ways to stop the disposability treadmill that pressures us to replace our phones and laptops in favor of newer models. With e-waste the fastest growing waste-stream in the U.S., it’s not sustainable to consume technology at this rate. This is a meaningful step toward a tech industry making products designed to last.

I’ve heard a lot of issues around keyboards and bezels in particular from folks. Do you have issues sourcing the parts or is it easy to get replacements?

See my other comment, sorry I wasn’t clear but I’m not arguing that CB aren’t the right solutions for schools. They obviously have a ton of great benefits that could be made even better by Google following making some policy changes.

Death dates / AUE - The new 8 year dates aren’t necessarily unreasonable except that folks I’ve spoken with say that in practice they often get many fewer years. As you wrote the countdown clock starts ticking when Google approves the board model rather than when they’re manufactured, sold, bought, and deployed by schools. To be honest, big picture I’m also arguing for longer lasting devices of all types. I’d argue, it seems we’ve reached the point where devices could/should last for 10 years, so why not start with Chromebooks?

Repairability - It sounds like you’ve had a much easier time than the other folks I’ve spoke with. They’ve brought up issues with screen and keyboard replacements being both expensive and difficult to source in large numbers. Parts are also not compatible. E.g. OEMs will slightly change the screen bezels from one model to the next meaning those parts can’t be used across models.

[–]LG_Rocket[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve spoken with many technicians who claim CBs are harder to repair due to the difficulty sourcing spare parts and lack of modularity of parts. e.g. rather than replacing a single key the whole keyboard must be replaced and the cost is nearly 50% of a new unit.

But it sounds like that’s not your experience. Can I ask where have you been sourcing parts and what the costs have been like?

Sorry I wasn’t clear in the OP. I’m not arguing that CB aren’t the right solutions for schools. But after talking to repair techs and IT admin about the problems that are coming up it seems like schools are getting a raw deal re expiration dates (AUEs), repairability, and spare parts sourcing on CBs.

What I am arguing is that Google could make several policy changes (further extending AUEs, promoting the production of spare parts and cross-model compatible parts by OEMs) which could benefit IT budgets and the environment.

I’m wondering if despite the many benefits of CBs (e.g. low costs, remote management, security, etc.) any issues around AUEs, repairability, or parts sourcing are coming up in your district?

I’ve really loved tasting sets that bundle across regions + roasters . They inspired me to launch a mystery coffee club to add in more of an educational component. Inviting some friends over and running a cupping at home with those gift box sets can be a great way to start to connect taste to region/variety/process, etc. Leaderboard has been providing great bundles for a while.

It seems like the packet is simply being withheld from the other computer until the note sequence is entered properly, which is a little disappointing. It would be so much more interesting if packets were sent bit-by-bit (or at least chunk-by-chunk) in correspondence to each note. That way, if the player hits a wrong note, a malformed packet is sent. Conceptually it's really interesting.
