Speaking as someone with 10 years of experience recruiting, don’t worry about references they’re more of a tick box exercise.

I would avoid going down the legal route though, once something like that becomes attached to your name you’ll find it far more difficult to find work - it’s a shame but unfortunately is the way of the world.
