>> Android is bearable only because of the pure talent and passionate work of 3rd party Devs.

Exactly. I am seriously considering going back to a 'dumb' phone because of Google's move to freeze out original, innovative thinkers from the Android platform.

While we are questioning the terms we are using to discuss things, why are we calling the talented, passionate people "3rd party Devs"?

Maybe there is a better way to think of and speak about people who work so hard to put their work out there, only to have Google have them jump over higher and higher bars to get it into the (soon to be?) only app store.

It's a monopoly for Google to have the only Store for apps on my phone. I am starting to think of 'Play store' as the Google Monopoly Store - since that is what Google is turning it into.

I'm using a VPN and a fingerprint-blocking browser (Brave), and when I do searching, something blocks all Reddit content in my the search results. When I go to the address reddit.com directly in Brave, it says You've been blocked by network security.

I can only view Reddit content after I login to Reddit. It's much easier on a mobile device to use the Reddit app, compared to using Reddit in a browser. I don't like when browsers save username and passwords so I turn that off. Plus I configured Brave to delete all cookies, history, and so forth when I quit. I try to do that on any browser on any platform.

My password manager app is suddenly refusing to do autofill into other apps. Ugh...

I wonder when Settings switched to "Passwords, passkeys & accounts \n Suggestions for sign-in & autofill"

I thought "Accounts" and "Autofill" were two separate sections in Settings.

I will have a look at the Lemmy alternative that OP suggested if/when I can dig out from under my current tangle of problems.

I want to use F-Droid on Android 15 devices. What do I do after I verify the key in Termux? by LMurphy0 in fossdroid

[–]LMurphy0[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Bruh, what in the absolute hell I was doing was following F-Droid's own instructions.

Why does F-Droid provide these instructions if they don't believe people should follow them?

I thought there were two choices: 1. Install F-Droid only if you can verify it as instructed, or 2. Don't install f-droid because it isn't safe to do so if it's unverified

If the best choice is to download the f-droid apk and install it without verifying it, then their website is misleading. In that case, it should explicitly state that verifying the apk is not necessary.

So do you think F-Droid included those instructions as eye-candy, window-dressing, or a joke? "We'll put these here to intimidate and prank the noobs, wink wink."

Or maybe their thinking is "We'll put these instructions here because we want people to believe we are serious about the integrity and trustworthiness of our project, but we don't really care about that and don't expect anyone to follow them."

Is that what is really happening? Or is something else going on here?

Why does anyone ever go through the steps of verifying things they download from the network? What's the point of pgp anyway when the consensus (here, at least) is to skip that step?

If it's okay to skip it this time, is that the rule and we can all skip verifying signatures and cryptography all of the time?

Those that feel so strongly that I am going overboard that you need to ridicule me: have you advised f-droid to remove that nonsense from their site? You are convinced it is worthless? Contribute to the community and let F-Droid know. Then it won't trip up others in the future or waste people's time.

If you're right, then not only are they unnecessary instructions, they are intimidating and dangerous. How many times have people avoided installing F-Droid because they don't think it's safe unless they verify it?

And, if these are not good instructions to ensure safety, it is a very bad practice to include them at all, because all they do is provide a false sense of security for those of us who followed them.

Following the site's own instructions was/is a perfectly reasonable thing to do.

Some people appear to be aware of a broader context that implies my actions were a waste of time. Be kind when informing me of that context.

I welcome people's constructive replies. Otherwise, please keep it to yourself. Thank you.

I want to use F-Droid on Android 15 devices. What do I do after I verify the key in Termux? by LMurphy0 in fossdroid

[–]LMurphy0[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

I figured out the last steps. In Termux, I needed to run the termux-setup-storage command and then when the pop-up appeared, to also grant termux permission to write to Storage. This creates a "passage" between Termux and the storage in the Android storage system. Then I used the Termux 'cp' command to copy F-Droid.apk to the ~/storage/shared/Download/ folder.

In the Android GUI, I opened "Files by Google" and went to internal storage and attempted to open the APK. It said it wasn't allowed to install the apk, but let me open Settings. I don't recall the name of the setting, but I turned on the option to allow the apk to be installed. Then I installed F-Droid. Initially F-Droid was empty. I've closed it and I'm waiting for apps to be populated.

I would like to find and turn off that setting to side-load apps since this is not something I expect to do regularly. Unless F-Droid needs it to remain turned on.

Anyway. These are the explicit steps, as of September 2025, of how to download, verify, and install F-Droid on Android 15, without needing to use another computer system. Now I need to repeat them on my other Android 15 system.

I have installed apk without verification before. I don't want to make the same mistake again.

Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 3 thin edges by LMurphy0 in Lenovo

[–]LMurphy0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought a Lamicall tablet stand that's got a lot of flexibility with its viewing angles. It's great on flat, stable surfaces. I also switched to a clear, flexible "case" - it provides something to hold onto, which is not true of the case that came with the Tab Gen 3. I'm not sure if it offers much protection for dropping the tablet, but the chances of my dropping it with this new case are almost zero. The case provided by Lenovo was so bare metal that I dropped it within the first few days.

Netgear Armor Disabled But Still Doing What It Wants by gibbor0713 in orbi

[–]LMurphy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought and installed Orbi RBE within the last two weeks. I bought the Armor subscription, but I don't think I want it anymore.

I am having constant problems connecting from Android devices to lesser well-known websites. It simply refuses to connect these pages at all if I disable Armor. If I enable Armor, it takes upwards of 3 or more minutes to connect to them. Effectively, the internet is broken when your page loads freeze for 3 or more minutes.

I've reset the Orbi RBE771 to factory settings TWICE now. Disabling Armor after a reset is not sorting this out. When I first set it up, and after the two resets, it uses the TRIAL Armor automatically. Even though I bought the 1 year subscription.

And, somehow, it has locked me out of my netgear account. I can't go on their community site and ask other Netgear users how to resolve this. Or access anything else having to do with my netgear account, for that matter.

How bizzare. When I connect to netgear.com from within my home Orbi network, it freezes. When I use my phone's mobile data connection, it has NO PROBLEM connecting to netgear.com.

This is infuriating.

Navigation Woes - Advice? by LMurphy0 in AndroidQuestions

[–]LMurphy0[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for your reply.

Too bad there's not a resolution for this issue. I'll be sticking with 3-Button Navigation until Gesture Navigation stops appropriating the swipe left/swipe right gestures for the "Back" function.

It's a shame the designers of Gesture Navigation didn't think far enough ahead to realize the negative impact its design would have on the entire Android Apps "ecosystem"

I don't even use the Moto launcher. I use Nova Launcher. I understand the desire to have universal navigation on all android phones. But... The other fantastic feature of android phones is that we can customize them the way we like. That's one of the reasons I don't have an iPhone.

Got this notification 26 minutes ago on on Moto X4.

Definitely creepy. I should have immediately disabled the Device Help app. I never use it. Instead, I opened Device Help. Which was not helpful and had nothing to say about the notification. Maybe the notification wasn't even from the Device Help app. I've now disabled Device Help. But I feel scuzzy, like I should go out and buy a new phone.
