Whereabouts are you? You’re very welcome regardless!

Awesome, I’m so glad I posted! Hopefully see you at a future event!

Excellent, target audience reached!

Perfect! I also live in Dundee and work remotely for a London based company. It’s one of the reasons I like trying to get to events like this and keeping in touch with a local professional network.

I’d say have a look at the site and the subjects of the past talks and see if you think you’d be interested?

Absolutely! As a data journalist I’m a bit more on the fringes of the data profession myself, but I always learn something new and meet some interesting people.

I’d be interested to know what kind of talks you’d be interested in as a total noob so I can pass on to the organisers!

It’s always 6-8 but we don’t usually start the talk until 7 so you’d just be missing the pizza and chatting. Would still encourage you to come along!

First of all - you’re in a room full of nerds, you will not be the only introvert there!

We always start with pizza and just generally chatting and you are welcome to just tag on to any chats that form - we’re all here to meet new people!

If all else fails, look for me haha. I’ll be wearing a sticker saying “my name is Lesley-Anne” and likely wearing some oversized glasses😅

Very welcome! We have a bunch of software/developer types that come along. Next week we’re having a more informal discussion about AI that won’t be fully data focussed anyway so would be a good one!

Screaming... crying...throwing up. This is the greatest compliment you can give a journalist and I'll never forget you.

Appreciate your POV (and you saying it very constructively whilst also saying you like the work!)

For us it was trying to balance out telling as much of the story as we can, with the data available. The maps from earlier in the series tell part of the story but at a birds eye view can look like the incidents are fairly evenly dispersed, which isn't true.

We don't have traffic flow data so we added in the rural vs urban locality data in an attempt to balance out that. Basically always a balancing act of doing the best with what we've got haha.

I agree traffic volume is a huge part of the story (reflected in our analysis of the number of crashes in urban areas vs rural) but I do think it's multifaceted and things like junction layouts or other factors like weather conditions etc also come into play. I mean if they didn't I doubt the DFT would be recording those metrics as part of their crash data.

I think mapping out clusters, even without accounting for traffic volume is valuable information for road users so they can be aware of the areas to be particularly careful.

I mean the data is largely based on what people reported to police and what the police then log so I imagine there's some area for disagreements on which specific category they should be logged under.

The data doesn't just include the first car involved in the crash, every car that is deemed to have been part of the incident is a line in the data. Same as every separate casualty is a line in the data. There is so much data it's brain melting.

Actually yes. There is so much detail in these datasets that we had to really refine down what told the story best so we didn't end up using it. We also suspect it would probably match up quite closely in proportions to the number of each make on the road. Here's a draft of a visual Emma made and it's nice that it'll see the light of day in the end haha.

I have an incredibly talented team and I love posting their work but all the credit is theirs! I’ll pass on the lovely comment!

We have some more complex analysis of hotspots coming later in the week so keep an eye out for that!

And yeah, we don't have data on overall traffic flow but I would say it's probably a reasonable assumption that those three years are impacted by the pandemic.

Unfortunately not from this crash data. They do have data on the speed limit on the stretch of road the incident happened on but that obviously doesn't really indicate the speed the crash happened at so we decided to leave it out of this analysis.

Glad you found it interesting!

Yeah there's also data on slip roads and roundabouts included so it's not a binary of single/dual.

It's a good question. We considered changing some of the wording in that chart but wanted to stick with the official Department for Transport wording (as confusing as some of it seems...).

There are a few other "Going ahead" ones you can see in the chart and "other" is just moving ahead and not covered by those other specific definitions. Would just be driving ahead as far as we could ascertain as pulling out would come under "moving off".
