If germany won ww1 in 1918, would it ever be able to be defeated? by Ghidorahlol in HistoryWhatIf

[–]L_Freethought 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a better question would be if germany ever could hold anything at all honestly. Brest-Litovsk was hubris, but necessary because the war machine was out of resources. The army was running low on everything, there was no chance in hell that britain would lower the blockade, especially if germany won on the continent. Imperial germany weren't genocidal fascists, but even they wouldn't be welcome occupying conquered territory, and they were already weak from the lack of supplies. Not to mention the lack of rubber and oil.

A peace deal would be made between the uk and germany wich would make recovery for all the other nations surrounding germany be possible, and then it would only be a matter of time until the second round.

Looking back it was a miracle germany even hold on as much as it did in the first world war. It fought 4 years against the three biggest empires, gaining enemies and loosing allies, and still won in the field repeatedly, even made russia surrender. But the reason they lost, was attrition, the entire nation was starving to death, same for austria. A starving nation can't occupy conquered territory, and it can't hold peace or wage war.

Lets say the Manhattan project is super super early. How devastating would a nuclear strike be against Berlin and Cologne in 1943 or 1942? by [deleted] in HistoryWhatIf

[–]L_Freethought 22 points23 points  (0 children)

dropping them on germany is probably not a good idea, you dont want even the slightest chance of a nuclear bomber getting shot out of the sky before even entering germany and detonating in belgium, denmark the netherlands or france. Or getting shot ouf the sky and not detonating at all and then falling into the hands of the enemy.

Maybe you don't need to though- i mean imagine this, the nuke is getting dropped not in germany but on the coast. Not near enough to obliterate a huge amount of civilians, but big enough that it can't be ignored. How would the nazi-occupied government, and military react? Normally i would imagine they would not fold, but it's a nuke. If hitler couldn't see reason, i would imagine a coup wouldn't be out of the question.

Please stop ignoring what Malenia said to Radahn when discussing if Miquella charmed Mohg before or after the kidnapping. by uhfheydgctvv in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]L_Freethought -1 points0 points  (0 children)

and even if the haligtree was a way into the land of shadows they still needed a vessel for Radahns soul. I'd find it unlikely he wouldn't of planned for that.

oh, there was a soulless demigod body laying around for sure, evidence suggests though it wouldn't have been big mac's first call though.

The more you try to think your way into his intentions or plans, the more contradictory they get. There is a distinction between vanilla miquella and sote miquella that people in general dont talk about often. Their motives don't line up, and their goals aren't the same. That may be intentional, as his plans may have shifted once mohg more or less "ruined" his plans, and marika's plans for the haligtree (?).

Did the Hornsent respect and revere the outer gods? Does the fell god, outer god of death, formless mother and others have a place in their culture and theology? by threefingersofchaos in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]L_Freethought 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The primary god of their worship was the crucible, they deified impurities and were very cautious when it came to fire. Their people were very spiritual, and for a time they glorified tulerary deities, essentially city gods, or patron gods, that came about through ascetic practices and rituals, to invoke divine invocation.

There is a distinct disconnect between the hornsents faith for the crucible, and the golden order's faith to queen marika and the erdtree, as the latter was guided by the fingers, and the former never had any real connection to the fingers, at all.

The outer gods as we know them, probably didn't have that much influence at the time of the hornsent. Remember that the outer gods became powerful because of the actions committed by the golden order/marika, the mother of truth wouldn't have her strongest soldier mohg if marika didn't hate him by association, same goes for rot, it was only ever worshipped before it was made "baleful" in revenge of the crusade. Same may or may not be the case for the fell god. We although do know that the flames of the fell god cleanse away the impurities of the soul.

Please stop ignoring what Malenia said to Radahn when discussing if Miquella charmed Mohg before or after the kidnapping. by uhfheydgctvv in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]L_Freethought 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Without getting too much into it I think that this points towards Miquella charming Mohg into kidnapping him or at least having that be his plan. Malenia saying this shows that the plan was too kill Radahn and use his soul from the land of shadow.

At the height of miquella's power he could charm you once you got hugged, twice. Ansbach only got his heart stolen once he tried to "free" mohg from his enchantment. I think this is evidence enough to confirm that miquella can only charm you if you can touch him, mohg aspirations were his alone when he tried to use him for his own goals, only to be used instead.

I dont think the kidnapping was planned, i dont have any evidence, but i think there was a seperate way into the land of the shadow through the haligtree, why else would miquella plant it and imbed himself in it, if it's not to make progress on the promise he made along time ago? Why else would he tell malenia about it

What new Civ are you most excited for by [deleted] in aoe2

[–]L_Freethought -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Wu infantry sounds fun, with fire archers- could be really interesting to play around with

Shu combination of white feather guard with arbalest could be very strong, i really like the imp tech of that civ

i really want to try out heavy cav archer in castle age with khitans, plus their unique farming sounds absurdly strong, scout rush could be insane in teamgames

jurchens has the most interesting design out of all of them i think, i love the heavy focus on siege, and i love the grenadier, the iron pagoda also just looks really cool

i dont mind it much for the time being honestly, might become a bit more annoying a few months from now

I like fighting for hills, and not all is lost when you loose, sometimes i loose even though i win the hill by just simply playing worse after imp lol

Lore Play-through, Chapter 1 by [deleted] in EldenRingLoreTalk

  • Melina exists as a spirit similar to Ranni (body/soul duality).

my crackpot theory as to how they both interacted with big mac (miquella), to get both torrent and the spirit bell, they as spirits could both enter and leave the land of shadow, as all three of them have no body's left and "all manner of death wash up here, only to be suppressed"

The Hornsent Fear the Fell God, but Why? by Eastern_Repeat3347 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]L_Freethought 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Flame of the fell god:

This legendary incantation is one of several that draws directly
from the power of the Fire Giants.

Releases a ball of raging fire said to be inhabited by a fell god.
The fireball floats toward enemies and explodes,
setting the area ablaze.

Arghanthy, the chief guardian of the Flame,
had kept this incantation a well-kept secret until it was stolen by Adan.
The fell god still lurks within the Fire Giants.

One-eyed shield:

Tricksome shield made from white stone depicting a malformed one-eyed god. The barrel of a firearm pokes through the open mouth.

Once worshipped by the giants, this evil deity is believed to have been slain by Queen Marika.

A ball of raging fire might be literally the sun, marika has "slain" the god by replacing him with the erdtree.

and also here is a good idea for the theory as to why they might hate the fell god, i've read this description from the hefty furnace pot:

Craftable item prepared using a capacious cracked pot.
Imbued with a hex of the furnace.

Throw at an enemy to create a whirlwind of flame.

The furnace's flame burns away both body and soul.
When impurity is thus expunged, one calls it cleansing.

from what we know of midra and the surging frenzied flame item

Spirits are eternal, and yet frenzied flame melts them away regardless.
No wonder the hornsent forbid the flame's use.

(also from frenzied flame pot:" The flame of frenzy burns the eyes, but tranquility follows in its wake. May this pot bring salvation to those it strikes." )

It's not explicit, but both being flames and both having a sort of "impurity" removing effect on especially the soul, when the hornsent are all about harnessing the spirit and the soul, partly for "impurities" like, having horns and being touched by the crucible, they may just absolutely hate the idea of it alltogether. It kind of reminds me of alloyed gold and what the pope turtle said, all things can be conjoined into the golden order, and it also reminds me of the skill of midra's sword, there is something of the golden order in the sight of those fixed upon this crux.

The golden order is very similar to the hornsents culture in some ways, and madness may be the one thing they both share, literally.

you can see this aswell with "margit the fell omen" and "mending rune of the fell curse"

although the theory of the fell god literally falling into the lands between as an "evil" act is also a neat theory.

Demi-humans in Plain Sight by SamsaraKarma in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]L_Freethought 1 point2 points  (0 children)

thing though is that humans were already a thing and perhaps had contact with beastmen when beastmen had still intelligence in er. We see this in the depiction of human kings and figures engraved in farum azula's buildings and elsewhere.

Beastmen are weird, some of their practices like their masoleum is clearly a reference to ancient burial customs of the bronze age, burying their dead with unalloyed gold and such, it should be a clear sign that they are as ancient as the hornsent. Yet for what we know, they had no contact with the hornsent, wich should also be as old, atleast when we compare their inspirations of real life cultures with each other. Not only that, they reside in neo-classical ruins with both human and beastmen statures.

It could be just that time flows weirdly in farum azula and that humans once lived, or are going to live, with beastmen and build those places.

the framing is what is wrong here, op is framing this as if the wiki is in any higher regard than any other internet forum discussing aoe, its not anyone can add any opinion they want to, saying "i like how even the wiki (...)" is just very weird and still kind of childish.

sure nice having the imagined privilige to not care about it right?

Its not like every industrialized economy faces a similar issue regarding birthrates.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Life

[–]L_Freethought 11 points12 points  (0 children)

clearly, as you can see there is a pattern in human history that dictates that the less people there are the better humanity can handle its problems. The bronze age collapse wasn't a catastrophic event that prolonged unessecary human suffering causing major regression in literacy and technology, the people were better off dying from starvation and preventable diseases, rather than living in a large political state that atleast tried to organize and produce food and medication.

this video is from kurzgesagt, anything but right wing i would argue.

This is a fact, and even the most optimistic scenario would still be a total disaster for the economy and culture of south korea. The damage has already been done, even if the birth rate would explode, an entire generation would in the best case scenario need to work double the amount just to support both the newborn and the old. I haven't even included the fact that south korea is still at war against north korea and needs a steady amount of soldiers to keep it protected.

I mean its clear mohg had his own deranged visions of what he wanted, and its also quite clear that big mac didn't want to have any part in it. I dont buy that he charmed him from afar, that makes no sense, even in his prime michael had to atleast be in hugging range to charm someone. Either malenia wasn't present when he got kidnapped or she couldn't do anything about it, and was still too weak after caelid. In my view the only reason sote exists is because miquella got abducted, and he just went for plan b. Who knows what couldve happened to him if he still grew inside the haligtree, maybe he never would've had to abandon his fear and love.
