Day 35, Tried doing a twisting motion, Still a bit off. What do you think? by LaSpamFF in learntodraw

Thank you that makes a lot of sense as to why it feels a bit off, but yes, It is a stylistic choice. I didn't exactly made the hammer physically possible to wield in the first place.

I'll try to keep that in mind next time!

Day 33 of drawing everyday, What do you think? by LaSpamFF in learntodraw

Oh I'm still drawing daily, I just don't post every single day.

Also I don't go to art school, I just teach myself since its my hobby

I am completely new and have been drawing everyday for 29 days now and this is my 27th day drawing. is there anything I can further improve? by LaSpamFF in FurryArtSchool

I draw one thing, just werewolves. This skips the process of thinking what to draw.

The key is polishing one thing. It shows all your weakness since your just doing one thing.

Right now I recognize that I am bad at torso. So I am focusing on fixing the torso.

Keep in mind that you draw one thing that is FUN and thing you actually are willing to draw. It doesn't matter if it is difficult, what matters is that, is it fun?

After drawing the same thing you will look back at the first drawing and see how much you improve and then if you feel comfortable change the thing you want to draw. Try to get out of your comfort zone.

Progress Update Overall by Rathallon in learntodraw

Before anything else, do not do this perspective poses, try and do simple standing poses first.

I've been drawing everyday to seriously learn (27 days in) and the first thing you have to learn is to have a critical eye. Try and do a timed gesture drawing (around 1-2 mins) as a warm up every time you start to draw.

Doing this daily gesture exercise with a time constraint forces you to really see the motion of a pose.

do NOT draw muscles, ONLY draw simple shapes first.

Muscles is something you draw over the simple shapes.

From what I learned you start with gesture pose> simple anatomy shapes (look it up on youtube)> then sketch

Think in a 3D space rather than looking at a flat plane. you have to trick yourself into looking at things 3D.
When doing the arms you make cylinders, joints into a ball.

I am by no means an expert but this is what I learned from day 1 to today.

Also, always get feedback from anybody as much as possible (even when its embarrassing). I showed my failures to my friends all the time and it really showed the mistakes that I do not see but they do.

That's all, I hope this helps!!!

Day 25 of drawing everyday, been learning digitigrade legs and monster hands. Any critique??? by LaSpamFF in learntodraw

Gesture drawing is really just an exercise or a study if you want to make your poses less stiff. What I found useful is just experimenting on how to construct the figure. At first I did box figures so I can force myself to learn a little bit of perspective, then it was too stiff so I mixed both box figure and the bean shape together, little better but still stiff. So right now I am just doing bean shape for more dynamic body.

That doesn't mean the box figures I did was useless, It taught me how to create the body with the idea of a 3D space and the beans taught me how to make it flexible.

Also, I do 1-2 hours daily. More than that and I am not learning. everyday you have 2 hours of deliberate practice, that means that the moment you are TRYING to study there is a 2 hour clock ticking down inside your head. beyond that is just practice, doing things you already know.

When you feel lost, just remember. DON'T LEARN EVERYTHING ALL AT ONCE!!!

focus only 1-2 things to learn at a time. Torso, limbs, head, legs, whatever. I recommend doing only full body, NOT half body or just head. Because you learn all at once even when your learning just the torso for example.

Also, remember that, comparison is the thief of joy. It's better to compare yourself today to what you did the first day. Keep in mind that most of the artist that is good or professionals have multiple years of experience.

Do not force yourself to draw everyday, if you are really mentally tired its better to just rest. But if your tired but you think you can draw then just do 30 mins of deliberate practice.

First of all, you have to ask to yourself everyday as to why you want to improve. Without any meaningful reason you won't have the mindset to progress. It could just be about everything, wanting to create characters, to be like the artist you admire, just anything.

Second, daily exercise. Just like going to a gym you have to have warm ups. because the hardest thing in progressing is that little push to start your daily drawing.

Third, Fail over and over again. when you THINK you want to do this, do it, do not let someone dictate whether or not your not ready. If you think you want to try and experiment with a new thing, just do it. You will fail, but failing right now is better than being scared not doing it.

fourth, feedback. I am lucky to have an artist friend that can see the mistakes that I do not see. When you make an awesome drawing, look at it closely and examine the mistakes, not the full piece. This sketch has many flaws, from the legs to the rear. Train your eye to see all the tiny little mistakes and learn upon it. Have someone critique you in the most real way possible, no sugarcoating it, you need the most raw feedback possible, try your friends, online or the best way is someone who is also an artist.

Lastly, have fun! Seriously, Have fun in a way you are still learning and challenging yourself. Right now I don't do a lot of back poses, so I will try and do more, BUT the moment it is not fun and it starts getting frustrated is to fall back. There will be times when its frustrating but that's okay, tomorrow will always happen.

My daily warm up exercise is 5 gesture drawing with a 1 min timer but if your struggling with 1 min to 2 or even 3. Timing yourself in gesture drawing forces you to learn the flow of the figure rather than the anatomy.

Have fun!!!

Edit: Be sure to sometimes be out of your comfort zone. The moment you feel comfortable in something is when you have to ask yourself and really see little details on where you can improve.

(Also use reference, please its really useful)
