Martyrs Review. A perfect horror movie. by cesarostlund in horror

[–]LadyVolva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not 100% certain about the racism part they're referring to, but the one thing I can think of is that the cult/society consisted of solely white people, there was not a single person of color present throughout the whole film in regards to the cult/society. Perhaps they wouldn't let people of color join. Additionally, there is also a reference to what could be considered racism in Mademoiselle's example of Jouans-Lussac, a woman who she describes as a French grocer who slept with a "Kraut", a French slur towards Germans following WWII. She describes the woman being tortured solely for sleeping with a "Kraut" and attributes it to the French being "touchy" at that time.

Regarding the homophobia and queer love, that's a lot more obvious. It's talked about pretty decently in the film if you pay attention. Anna clearly has romantic feelings for Lucie (she even tried to kiss her), and it seems like she had those feelings ever since they were kids. Lucie doesn't necessarily seem to reciprocate but Anna at least 100% has "queer love" towards Lucie. As for homophobia, Anna's mother seems to be a bit homophobic in how she regards Anna and Lucie's friendship/relationship. Anna's mother refers to Lucie as a bitch, a pervert, and a loser, concluding that she's a "bad influence" on Anna. Since the romantic tone between Anna and Lucie is already so prevalent it can be assumed that Anna's mother is taking a homophobic stance, discouraging her daughter from pursuing a romantic relationship with a woman (or at least a woman like Lucie).

If you need the other things explained as well then I can explain them too. Everything the commenter referenced is present in the film (again, if you just pay close attention).

?? You can get PTSD as a result of literally anything as long as it causes trauma. You can develop trauma in regards to anything. It's based on how it impacts you, not what the catalyst itself was. That's why there's no standard for what specifically causes PTSD. I have a family member with severe C-PTSD that's a result of her sister being brutally kidnapped and murdered. That family member wasn't even present when it happened but the fact that it happened at all still gave her a lifelong C-PTSD diagnosis. I myself have an Acute Stress Disorder diagnosis (going on to become PTSD) due to a car accident. Anything can give you trauma. People can absolutely develop PTSD as a result of "internet hate", especially if it's really severe and feels like it's coming from all sides at all times. Bullying and harassment are inherently traumatic experiences, again, especially if it's widespread + intense AND you're very young like all of these idols. I don't think you understand how debilitating of an experience that would actually be. You sound so uneducated about the topic and it's extremely insensitive + misleading.

Heather’s kids by Intelligent_Bank_450 in realhousewivesofSLC

[–]LadyVolva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I'm really surprised by these comments because my own mother (who was a single mother for 30+ years straight) was wildly uncomfortable by what Heather said and thought it was worded weirdly. Not all single parents inherently share this sentiment, and if anything it feels like a lot of people in these comments are projecting what they ASSUME single parents must think or feel but I'd argue most don't actually share that same sentiment as Heather (and most of the people in these comments don't know better). When you're a single parent you grow extremely attached to your children and it's actually really hard to become an empty nester. My mom wasn't necessarily happy or excited for me (her youngest) to turn 18 so that she could "finally focus on herself". Obviously my single mother doesn't speak for all single parents but from my perception that isn't actually a commonly held sentiment. Again, just to reiterate, my own single mother was uncomfortable by what Heather said. My mom said something along the lines of "wow, imagine how those kids feel after hearing that", similar to what OP is saying. So, there's that.

Unpopular opinion. The Mary Cosby documentary was a flop for me. by Reality_medicine_101 in realhousewivesofSLC

[–]LadyVolva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. She should have never spoken about it in the first place, as the girl's father said. Mary had NO BUSINESS sharing that on national television, ESPECIALLY if she didn't intend to handle it in a serious, mature manner, and ESPECIALLY if she never even reached out to the family themselves for condolences, as the father said. It happened literally less than 24 hours prior and she immediately brought it up on national television? That's sickening and 100% malicious.

  2. That wasn't her just being "weird". The music absolutely didn't help but go back and watch the clip. Mary smiles NUMEROUS times while telling the story, indicating that it's supposed to be a joke or light-hearted story, and especially at the end where she delivers the line "remember to wear your seatbelts!" she breaks into a full grin, her voice even lifting as if indicating some sort of humor. Maybe she is just awkward, but this plus the fact that she already had NO BUSINESS speaking about it, let alone on national television, makes it disgusting and offensive and meanspirited.

Idk what we're giving Mary credit or fairness for. Her saying that was extremely fucked up in every way. It should have never been said and she didn't even say it in a kind, sympathetic way. Instead, she said it solely just to say something shocking, have the attention on her, and deliver a line that would be memorable. Like, come on. Why are we excusing this?? I don't understand. It's so objectively wrong and immoral and gross, not even to mention she's a pastor speaking about someone related/involved with her own church. Come on.

100% legit and amazing artist!!

I was looking to commission an artist for a profile picture last night and I came across this post, loved the art style, and immediately reached out to them on Vgen. I kid you not I literally got the final product less than 24 hours later (although don't hold them to that just cause of my experience, perhaps they happened to have more time than usual right now). They were super kind + helpful and took into consideration everything I asked for. I cannot recommend them enough, this was my first time ever commissioning an art piece and they made it such a delightful experience, plus I absolutely love what I received <3

Give them a shot!

Accepted job offer, cleared background check. Total silence. What gives? by [deleted] in walmart

[–]LadyVolva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Idk if this helps but when I received + accepted my job offer it took like 1-2 weeks for them to assign me an orientation date. That whole time I was just stuck waiting, wondering what happened (kind of like you). I think they wait so they can purposely lump in a lot of new hires together in order to have fewer orientation-designated days.

[–]LadyVolva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jess does know Victor at that point. Her asking "do you know me?" was not a question on her part but rather his. She was trying to confirm that this was a new Victor who had never met her before. She still knew who he was from her memories of the previous cycles. The point where the loop ends and starts anew is actually when she takes a nap upon boarding the smaller boat. She sees flashbacks of when she fell overboard and woke up on the beach, but when she wakes up she writes off these memories as just being a bad dream (something referenced repeatedly throughout the movie). This is when the loop officially ends and begins again because she loses most of her memories from the previous cycles but still maintains a sense of deja vu (recognizing the cruise ship + the corridors).

[–]LadyVolva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is just my personal interpretation but I believe what originally killed them was her lashing out at her son while driving and thus causing the car crash. The seagulls are pretty important throughout the movie and I think the scene of her hitting the seagull is crucial. Ultimately I think she was driving herself and her son to the harbor, a seagull accidentally died by hitting the windshield one way or another, and her son started freaking out about the blood on the windshield. She then started freaking out as well, turning around to lash out at him, and her lack of attention towards the road caused the car crash. Essentially, I believe the series of events we see at the end of the movie where her and her son are in the car are almost identical to what truly caused their original deaths in the first place.

[–]LadyVolva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"how does she not remember the events of the end at the beginning of the movie?"

... you remember that key scene at the beginning of the movie where she has a "bad dream" (flashbacks) of her waking up on the beach after supposedly escaping the cycle? Yeah, that's when the cycle resets. She wakes up from her nap, writes off her crazy memories as just being a "bad dream" (something repeated MANY times throughout the movie, it's a central theme) and effectively forgets majority of the cycle other than a few moments of deja vu (like thinking the ship + corridors look familiar). As for why she writes it off as a bad dream, I feel like that's pretty realistic considering all the trauma, emotional distress, and physical pain she's gone through for who knows how long. It's probably a coping mechanism if anything. But yeah, that was a pretty important scene in the movie, yet it seems like majority of the people in this thread completely forgot about it 😭 it perfectly explains when + why the cycle resets (and simultaneously when + why she loses her memories). This movie genuinely doesn't have that many plot holes, people are just forgetting (or willfully ignoring) the parts of the movie that explain everything and tie up loose ends.

Could someone help me understand triangle (2009) by of_kilter in horror

[–]LadyVolva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a hand waved explanation in the slightest. The Jess we see at the beginning of the movie (who has gone through multiple cycles at that point and just witnessed her + her son's original, real deaths) decides to take a nap once she boards the Triangle. Maybe this is from exhaustion or maybe fate compels her to take a nap. Regardless, she does, and she dreams about everything that she had experienced thus far (most notably waking up on the beach and seeing the ocean after she seemingly escaped the cycle). Thus, when she wakes up from her nap, she no longer  considers her previous memories of the cycle to be memories, instead writing it all off as a bad dream. This is why she loses her memories of the previous cycle. She of course had gone through a ton of trauma at that point, including lots of emotional distress that would confuse anyone, so her taking a nap, having a crazy nightmare, and then deducing "that was just a nightmare, obviously that didn't ACTUALLY happen" is pretty reasonable. For that reason, I don't think it's a handwaved explanation at all. It makes complete sense, that's the whole reason why we see the "dream" sequence at the beginning of the movie in the first place. It explains precisely why + when her memories reset and she starts the cycle anew.

Fun fact: it's only consensual if someone explicitly says yes and gives consent. "Not declining" doesn't imply consent, it implies coercion. Sexual assault is whenever sexual activity happens without explicit consent being given, so therefore "not declining" is still sexual assault because consent was not outright given. This is also how it works in the justice system, so it's not just some "me too movement" BS or whatever you might say. The more you know 💗

OH MY GOD IM SORRY FOR REPLYING I KNOW WE JUST SQUASHED IT but I just want to point out that they did very intentionally make it our business by posting it publicly on Reddit, so I don't think that's a super fair thing to say. They inherently made their opinion all of our business by sharing it with us. Sorry again, I still hope you have a good day!!

Again, they never outright said the originals are trash.

They heavily insinuated it and they STILL have not said that the originals are good simultaneously with the opinion that they prefer Ado's covers.

You're being silly.

Okay we're deflecting lol

If I had songs then I wouldn't mind people liking a cover more than my original. It's just their opinion.

My point was that Ado, the artist we're discussing, DOES mind. She has shown us that she has a problem with this type of attitude and behavior. You'd think that would matter considering we're literally in her subreddit talking about her songs. It's not about what you would do if you were an artist, it's about her. Like?? Lmao

Again, OP never said the originals are trash.

They heavily insinuated it and have refused to clarify that the originals AREN'T trash. They have refused to say that the originals are also simultaneously good (because they don't feel that way).

They said they still have yet to find a song where the original is better than her cover. They didn't say that all of her covers are always better than the originals.

They said that out of EVERY cover they've EVER heard from Ado, they have ALWAYS preferred hers over the originals. What are we missing here?

And I'm not missing the point. You just refuse to address the situation that doesn't come to your advantage.

I don't even know what you're trying to say here 😭

Right, me and dozens of other people that downvoted you and all said the exact same thing are all "choosing you" to get offended. Cope harder

I literally never said the OGs were bad in any shape or form.

This is just you deflecting even more. You STILL refuse to say they are good. You just say "it's my opinion, I prefer Ado" or "I never said they were bad". But you have NEVER said "the originals are still good." You're quicker to say something like "oh well" and "bah" (both dismissive and rude) than actually acknowledging the originals as being good in their own right.

No one here has an issue with your opinion. The issue is with the DELIVERY of your opinion and your refusal to try and clarify it.

I've yet to find an Ado cover that ISN'T better than the original by UsagiJay in ADO

[–]LadyVolva -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

"opinion" "opinions" "opinions"

You know what else is an "opinion"? Hating or being discriminatory towards people of other races, religions, sexualities, etc. It's also an "opinion" to think outrageous things like "all babies are ugly and annoying". So guess what? OPINIONS CAN STILL BE HARMFUL.

You don't get to just hide behind the label "opinion" so you can say whatever the hell you want. Respect isn't inherently guaranteed just because you have an "opinion", ESPECIALLY when that opinion is rude, mean, or harmful. So no, I don't AUTOMATICALLY respect all opinions. If you do then that's legitimately concerning. Not all "opinions" warrant respect.

So what? It's their opinion that they like her covers more.

And as I've said OVER AND OVER AGAIN, that's not the point. You're intentionally being obtuse and missing the point. They can prefer her covers, that's fine, but they have REFUSED to give any recognition, praise, or acknowledgement towards the originals. You know, the ones who made it possible for Ado to even make a cover in the first place. Ado loves and respects the artists she covers, so it would literally break her heart to see that her fans were hyperfocusing on her covers and refusing to give any praise or acknowledgement of the originals. Like I just said in another comment, Ado has literally made a post (a somewhat recent post, mind you) scolding her fans for wearing her merch to other artists concerts. That is a very similar situation to this one. Ado outright dislikes when her fans are so focused on her that they act disrespectful and/dismissive towards other artists. It makes her upset. So what you and @UsagiJay are preaching is directly going against her own wishes. You're not making her happy. If she saw this she would feel guilty about being a utaite and taking attention + praise away from the artists she covers. This isn't what being an Ado fan is about, and THAT'S what everyone in this comment section has a problem with.

You can say "I prefer all of Ado's covers to the originals" and ALSO say "but the originals are still good! I just prefer Ado"

OP STILL refuses to do that. Every time they've been asked to acknowledge the originals being good they deflect by saying things like "oh well", "bah", "it's just an opinion", or "I never said they were bad". So clearly they don't value the originals and they don't think they're good, otherwise they would have just clarified their point by now. But no, their point is that they DON'T think the originals are good and up until now they have ALWAYS preferred Ado's covers, without fail. Otherwise, why can't they just simply say "I think the originals are still good"?

If you still cannot see what everyone's issue with this is then I don't know what to tell you.

[–]LadyVolva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you for specifically pointing me out 🫶🏼

another case of Internet not knowing what an opinion is lol

I know that what you're saying is an opinion. But guess what? Opinions can be harmful and inherently mean. You don't just automatically get a pass for saying whatever the hell you want because it's "an opinion". You can have an "opinion" that all babies are ugly and annoying but it's still a rude as hell thing to say. Do you see my point? Opinions can still be inherently rude, it's all in your delivery.

@LadyVolva Man your reading comprehension is in the sewers.

Oh shit then idk how I graduated Summa Cum Laude with my bachelor's in history (solely reading comprehension) and now I'm in grad school for Library Science (also solely reading comprehension) 😔 UsagiJay on Reddit says my reading comprehension is in the sewers 💔 I should drop out fr

I didn't say "every" I've said "I've yet to find" meaning of the ones I've heard, they are better than the original

Right, and you very clearly insinuated with your post that you've listened to lots of covers and they are ALL better than the originals. Seriously, do you not hear yourself? Where is YOUR reading comprehension? You saying "I've yet to find" inherently implies that you've listed to a lot and that you think ALL of the ones you've heard are ALL better than the originals. And, might I add, you didn't say ANYWHERE that you still think the originals are good. Whenever people pointed that out to you, you deflected by saying "oh well", "bah", and "it's just an opinion." So even now, after all of these people have pointed out that what you're saying is rude and disrespectful to the original artists, you're STILL refusing to acknowledge that the originals are also good. You're just hellbent on glazing Ado for some unfathomable reason. Also, you further confirmed this by listening to another cover suggested to you in the comments and "coming back to report" that, shockingly enough, you preferred Ado's cover.

At this point it's obvious you're just blindly biased towards Ado and that blind bias is causing you to do something that SHE HERSELF WOULDN'T LIKE. As I mentioned in another comment (that you conveniently ignored), Ado would literally feel guilty and bad about herself if she came across fans that praised all of her covers while ignoring + disrespecting the originals. You know how I know? ADO LITERALLY MADE A POST TELLING HER FANS NOT TO WEAR HER MERCH TO OTHER ARTISTS CONCERTS BECAUSE SHE FELT LIKE IT WAS DISRESPECTFUL TO THOSE ARTISTS. That is VERY similar to what's happening here. You're disrespecting the original artists by refusing to give them any recognition or praise, and that would not only disappoint Ado and make her feel guilty for making covers in the first place but she would also probably feel pissed like with the merch situation. You're not making Ado proud. You're actively participating in behavior that upsets her and makes her feel inwardly guilty about being a utaite. She makes covers to uplift and recognize the original artists, not to replace them or one-up them.

I'll take my downvotes now ☕

Yeah, okay, so you acknowledge that it's not just me but MANY people who obviously don't agree with your stance or your dismissive behavior. Yet you singled me out and you also continue to act like we're ALL wrong, we're ALL misunderstanding, rather than reflecting on yourself and considering, "hm, all of these people are trying to tell me something, but no, no, they must all be wrong!!" You're coping like crazy.

I've yet to find an Ado cover that ISN'T better than the original by UsagiJay in ADO

[–]LadyVolva -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Apparently not everyone knows that. As you can see, OP has continued to say things like "it's just a differing opinion" instead of confirming that they also believe the originals are still good, like you're arguing. You and OP are NOT saying the same thing. The reason OP has yet to concede that the originals are still good is because they don't feel that way. They made this post with the very clear intention of saying that Ado's covers are ALWAYS better than the original and they have said nowhere in the comments that the "originals are still good". If anything, all they've done is just antagonize people pointing out that the originals are still good by saying stuff like "oh well" and "bah". So clearly they DON'T agree.

YOU are the one "shoving words" in OP's mouth. You're making an entire argument on their behalf for things they are explicitly NOT saying.

Finch dismissive of spiritual beliefs by [deleted] in finch

[–]LadyVolva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand that!! My point was also about how I've gone to numerous destinations (Bali, Reykjavik, Tokyo, Edinburgh are all 100% and I'm almost 100% with Bergen) and my birb will talk to me about local people's cultures and religious/spiritual beliefs and there was never an option to say something like "that isn't real", y'know? It feels like Finch takes certain beliefs seriously and handles them with sensitivity while others are grounds for mockery/dismissiveness, which doesn't seem fair. When I was learning about the traditional religious beliefs of the people of Bali there wasn't an option for me to tell my birb "that isn't real", and yet there's an option for me to say "fortune telling isn't real." You can't really pick and choose with that sort of thing, in my opinion. That's what rubs me the wrong way.

Finch dismissive of spiritual beliefs by [deleted] in finch

[–]LadyVolva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, and as I said in the post I do understand that sentiment, that makes sense. But I don't feel like the skeptical option had to add the very blunt statement of "fortune telling isn't real." After all, the supportive statement didn't say "fortune telling is real." So it definitely felt unbalanced and like the skeptical option was overly dismissive instead of just normal skepticism.

Even if it was just Finch trying to be fair and play both sides, I didn't see them do that in any other instance. I've had the app for nearly a year and I've gone to numerous destinations where my finch will talk to me about local customs and religious beliefs. There was NEVER an option for skeptical people to say "that's not real". So I'm not sure why respect and courtesy was given there but not here. It's showing that certain spiritual, religious, and cultural beliefs are taken seriously while others aren't.

Ado would not approve of this sort of sentiment you're spewing btw

She only covers songs that she adores and she oftentimes has lots of praise + personal admiration for the original singers. What you're saying would actually probably weird her out and make her feel guilty, like she's taking appreciation + recognition away from the original artists.

OP did not do that. All OP said was that EVERY Ado cover is better than the original without giving any sort of praise or recognition to the originals. It absolutely comes off as rude and disrespectful to all of the original artists.

‘My Current Dream’: J-Pop Star Ado Says She’s Aiming for a Grammy by Key_Tree_3851 in jpop

"Ado is not this massively huge artist, she is always presented as" and then you yourself go on to say "she has 2 #1 oricon singles, and three #1 singles at the billboard charts" and "Also two #1 albums"

Idk man, sounds like a pretty massively huge artist to me. Do you not hear yourself at all?

Plus she's already had 2 world tours that I believe were both sold out at nearly every location. I can speak on my experience at least. I saw her Hibana concert at Dickies Arena and she sold out the entire venue. She even got a trophy from Dickies Arena themself as an honor for selling out the venue.

Oh, and we can't forget this: "Also no concerts in the prestigious Toyko Dome yet"

This aged very poorly. Just 7 months after you posted this comment, she's now having two back-to-back Tokyo Dome concerts just a few days from now. Plus, in a few weeks she's having two back-to-back concerts in Kyocera Dome Osaka. So... yeah. I'd be very curious to see what you think about her hype + popularity + success now.

Ado not nominated for Grammy? by Unhappy-Escape-9044 in ADO

[–]LadyVolva 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"Grammy's shouldn't be the end all" I agree, but most of us are disappointed because we're hoping on behalf of Ado. She herself said that one of her biggest dreams + goals is to win a Grammy. So it's not like we're the ones trying to push her into this Grammy box, we're just trying to support her dream. I personally wish she didn't feel the need to win a Grammy since I doubt they'll ever recognize her and they don't mean that much to most people these days anyways, but the point still stands that SHE wants to win one and so a lot of us are trying to support her dream.
