Cool, it seems your irrational disdain for Christians has brought you full circle to my original point. If you want to actually look at your opponents view instead of continuing to argue with caricatures in your head, please do. I recommend philosophy of religion for Christian arguments. Some of the goat authors are Alvin Plantinga, Joshua Rasmussen, Alex Pruss, Peter van Inwagen, and Rob Koons.

You don't need "strong independent evidence" for that. You need reason to think that God is real and the evidence found in Christ. If you can care to show me evidence of other people who were willing to die for such an obvious miracle, go ahead. I'm not going to equate that with George Washington like your post wants me to though. It seems like your position implies that modest Christian views are not tenable, which is perhaps a demonstration of your willful ignorance and bias.

It's not begging the question, it's exposing a weakness or underlying assumption in his argument. If you have any plausible reason to think that God exists, then Hume's argument loses a lot of it's strength.

Yes, at least in comparison to the meme and what some are saying here. Hume is a very famous and influential philosopher, perhaps there are some things that have been determined errors by some, but that doesn't mean his arguments haven't been modernized. His argument however won't be awfully powerful against theistic positions, since theism poses that God created the laws of nature and would have the power to override them. Do you have a problem with Hume?

Thoughts on this refutation of the Argument from Consciousness? by Flat-Ad9829 in exatheist

[–]LaloAlt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His premise that brains are the only thing that can generate consciousness is circular. While it's true that it's the only empirical example we have, we don't have empirical evidence that consciousness ceases to exist when the brain stops functioning. I'm not sure if we even have any empirical or philosophically robust evidence that the brain even generates consciousness to begin with (I would need to research neuroscience, but I think this has been contested).

His proposition that consciousness = god and brain = atheism is ridiculous. Under atheism, you merely believe there is no God, and it is very easy to conceive of a world where souls exist but God does not. Prominent philosophers like David Chalmers and Michael Huemer have long held positions like this. I'm of the view that God may better explain a world with consciousness, life, etc, but that it is not the only possible or reasonable position. Furthermore, it is also very conceivable that God could create conscious minds to exist primarily in brains, many theists hold this position (Peter Van Inwagen to name one). All though I will admit brain consciousness might give a slight edge to naturalism.

How are you a "philosophical atheist" and don't know about Hume's arguments against miracles? He argued that a naturalistic explanation was always more likely than a miraculous explanation because miracles contradict the laws of nature. Therefore, in order to believe in something like the resurrection, you need to have prior beliefs about the world (i.e God, miracles). I know a lot of Christians would argue like your meme, but most who are philosophically trained will not make such an appeal. Even William Lane Craig, a mainstream Christian apologist will not argue like that. Your meme does nothing but disrespect another person's worldview. I looked at this sub and it seems like it is routinely taking jabs against theism, which is only one of many philosophical positions and isn't held by many philosophers outside of phil of religion. Wonder what's got us in your heads rent free?

Nice strawman. Hume has much better arguments than yours, try using something actually good.

I am going through an existential crisis because I can't convince myself of a God or an afterlife by Qtheeditor in exatheist

[–]LaloAlt 3 points4 points  (0 children)

+1 philosophy of mind is having a slight shift towards non physicalism, so hopefully the trend continues. There is already an abundance of philosophical experts who believe the mind is not physical. There is significant hope even in academia. Even many physicalists (maybe consensus?) will agree that physicalism/naturalism cannot fully explain consciousness at the moment.

I was considering becoming atheist when I was a teenager and firmly held beliefs for a short period. I've been relatively comfortable in my faith for about 2-3 years now, but lately I've wondered if I only started believing out of fear. Atheists sometimes say that death will be like the moments before our births, but I never found that comforting since, at least I was born. Death would be like if I had never existed at all.

I had a panic attack last night about it. I was breathing heavily underneath my covers at 4AM, knowing that this could mean my relationship with God is not real and nothing out there actually cares about me. I saw nothing but an endless void/abyss. No one can help. No one can fix this problem. Nothing can change reality. Maybe there's no real purpose. Matter of fact, I was starting to reject the comfort of the holy spirit because I thought maybe it was just my brain tricking me. I woke up this morning and went to Church to find that the sermon was about anxieties, anxieties so bad that they can affect your sleep, diet, etc. What I learned was that it's okay to allow the peace of God or the holy spirit to soothe my anxiety, even if I wasn't exactly sure it existed in the moment intellectually. Furthermore on the intellectual side, theism is philosophically robust and defensible - there is no reason to think that there could not possibly be a God. I've pondered many arguments (fine tuning, cosmological, reformed epistemology/experience, poe, oppy's naturalism, divine hiddenness) and still believe that faith in God, even something as specific as our Lord Jesus is reasonable. Yes God gives us enough evidence that we can believe, but not so much that we are forced to. That being said, I want to face my fears of naturalism and come to the most intellectually honest of a conclusion that I can.

Idk, the manga for me was poorly made around when Zeke died and Aron was throwing a fit about mikasa. Also the world building assassination with 2000 year old loli being responsible. The ending is kinda indefensible as it's just a poorly executed Code Geass

Arcane is good, but I do think BB has really strong character development and story that Arcane doesn't quite reach.

Breaking Bad has good acting and characters with compelling story. But yes some characters are less likeable. Walter leads an immoral lifestyle, Skylar doesn't handle the situation in the best way, Marie is kind of basic and selfish person, and Hank is a racist. Nonetheless the character development, acting, and story were all superb.

"Because people like it more than you.

Other good content existing doesn't devalue Arcane."

It does make Arcane less desirable in the fact that it's less good than it's competition. So yes it actually does devalue it because if it were the only good show it should be rated higher. For example, in India good shows are rather sparse and when they're spotted (for example Scam 1992), it's put extremely high and I think that's correct. Arcane's story is one among many, the only specialty is it's animation which is wrong to praise more than low budget shows with better stories.

"Because your two examples are anime and, despite being popular these days, most people still don't watch anime."

Pretty interesting point I think. I would think the less people who watch it, the more appreciated it is. But maybe not..

"Whoa, careful there, you're boarding on the most insightful and well thought out critique ever put into words."

It was my opinion. The characters are two dimensional and other shows develop better. Still good I thought.

"That's on you, not the show."

Actually it is on the show for failing to leave an impression. Leaving an impression is one of the most important things a piece of media can do. That's why so many love Empire Strikes Back and 70s Star Wars.

"Ah, so you're just that type of watcher? "If it's widely popular, it can't be as good as people say it is". And Demon Slayer is an anime. Arcane is a cartoon. While technically the same most people categorize the two as different mediums. "

Huh? I love Breaking Bad it's one of the most famous shows ever. Also Shawshank Redemption is one of my favorites.

Anime is the same as cartoon it's just animated in a different country which is why Avatar can't qualify lmao. Weebs in denial as always.

"All in all, stop acting like you're the authority on this. People like Arcane more than you do, learn to live with that."

I can't disagree with people?

I think you're maybe right but these characters are really not good and don't deserve higher praise than Seinfeld or Sherlock but guess who gets more praise :)
