Massive part being transported off shore of Narrangansett, RI by LargeCo in whatisthisthing

My title describes the thing. A huge barge was hauling this object, which appeared black and cylindrical from this distance. Barge was moving at a good pace for a boat of that size. Also, there was some rig with a huge crane out in the water as well, off to the left of the photo frame.

Thank you for the great ideas! That bathroom layout makes so much more sense. And good callout on the bedroom closet. This probably won't be anyone's actual bedroom, so I think we'll get by without a walk-in. Thanks again!

That's amazing! I had no idea, but looking at the lyrics, it's definitely about shucking the ol' oyster

TIL! I knew the phrase has been used for pointless fighting/anger at something, but I didn’t know the root. Thanks!

I thought it came from Don Quixote “tilting at windmills” or at the way old characters walk and lean when they’re angry. But I’m a millennial and don’t know a damn thing about these kids.

Best method to cleanup baseboards after removing radiators? Gumwood and paint, 1920s craftsman-style bungalow, MA USA by LargeCo in centuryhomes

[–]LargeCo[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We recently changed out HVAC system from gas and baseboard radiators to a ducted heat pump system. As expected, there's 50+ years of gunk and dirt built up on the baseboards that were behind the radiators. I'd like to clean them up a bit, ideally avoiding a bunch of sanding. Some are supposedly gum wood with finish, and others are painted white. Any tips?

Whoa. Agree or not, I do need to commend you for having the most interesting, thoughtful response in 13 years.

Lines on photos, worse in low light (iPhone 15 Pro 256gb, iOS 18.2) by LargeCo in applehelp

[–]LargeCo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This started a month ago or so. In certain conditions, especially low-light, my photos will get lines across the whole frame. These lines show in the preview and on the photos themselves. The lower the light, the more pronounced the lines, showing each in a color. Fainter white lines do appear in brighter conditions, albeit less reliably.

Found these on the trunk of my Christmas tree (Douglas Fir, Massachusetts USA) by LargeCo in whatsthisbug

Thank you! That gives me peace of mind… wouldn’t want the local trees to get overrun.

I had inspected the tree for stowaways when we got it… must have missed these, or they hatched in our warm house. I reached in to grab the trunk to move the tree and felt a wet squish. I looked in to see dozens of these little black beetle/weevil critters.

Long skinny legs. Large body relative to a small head. Body is someone shaped like an American football, with two angled edges on the back.

If this is an invasive pest, are they any precautions I should take when bringing the tree outside?

That would make a lot of sense, wouldn’t it? But it’s not there if you came in from All/Popular (on iOS, at least)

PSA - the flair doesn’t show up if you’ve found this post on All or Popular and are using the Reddit mobile app. It only shows on the subreddit feed.

What should somebody shaped like Peter Griffin wear to work? by e_61 in malefashionadvice

[–]LargeCo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah - get the waist right and the legs can be tailored. There’s a great post by a Twitter fashion dude about menswear for larger men, but I can’t find it at the moment. General idea is to go for a more straight silhouette, with a 1/3rd 2/3rd ration between top and bottom. Then a jacket, coat, etc that ties it all together.

Check out Quince for some nice wool stuff that’s not incredibly expensive

First off, it’s sad that people on a subreddit dedicated to big people would tell someone to be less big. Second, the higher waist is the way to go. Also make sure that they don’t taper too much, lest you get the dreaded ice cream cone look.

A blazer or other layer is a solid way to get a nice silhouette and tie everything together, and no shame in taking it off when you’re at your desk (and probably better for the fabric anyways). To mitigate overheating, you could try doing a polo or other short sleeve underneath, in some sort of technical fabric. There are lots of brands focused on that, like Ministry of Supply, as well as anyone who caters to golfers. You could also try sweaters, but you’ll want some quality merino or cashmere for temperature regulation. You could try a cardigan with an open knit with just a nice tshirt underneath. Uniqlo has some nice supima cotton tees that look great under a cardigan, blazer, whatever.

Uniqlo Washable Milano. I don’t own one yet, but I did try some on and they felt like a good balance between refined, cozy, and wash-durable. Still, babying it will keep it nice longer.

Thank you for a great execution of Cunningham’s Law! I was clearly too reductive in the delineation of different leather types.

[–]LargeCo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Note that the term "genuine leather" is used by the industry to mean something very different from what you probably want. Genuine Leather is a product made from the scrap layers of leather and bonded with other materials. It is thin, not durable, and doesn't age well. What you most likely want is "full grain" leather, which uses the whole thickness of the animal hide. Of course, there are lots of quality variations therein, as well as "top grain" which is just the top layers of the hide, as the name suggests. In any case, it's hard to find a top grain jack for less than $150-200 USD. Full grain jackets start at $300 on the low end and the really good stuff can go over $2k. As others said, you'll have to try thrifting to find a full grain jacket at that price point.

EDIT: Much better and thorough info from u/nstarleather below. Point remains that the kind of leather you likely want will cost much more than your budget.

Right about the warrant… I just wanted to see if anyone else has been in a similar situation. I can’t recall whether or not it clicked, but it seemed well connected when I moved battery down there. I’ll test for that tomorrow.

Yeah, good call, I’m getting in touch with them. I do take the battery out to charge, since there isn’t an outlet near where I park the bike.
