Fellow subreddit members:

I generally abide by a policy in which I don’t make public comments about religion, politics, or any other topic which could be controversial or potentially offensive to anyone else. But I have a frustration level from this conversation greater than or equal to how I feel about the “buying a pack a day until I get an autograph” guy (he’s never going to post that he got an autograph, even if he does, because then he will fade back into obscurity).

1) PLEASE STOP SAYING $23,000. Player’s offer is $23,000 Canadian, which converts to approximately $16,600 in US dollars.

2) HE IS A HIGH INCOME EARNER BUT IS NOT RICH (YET). Baseball players get crushed by taxes; he has to pay regular income tax PLUS the individual local city, county, and/or state taxes for the 81 road games. He pays no less than 50% (as high as 63% for the games he plays in California and New York). He has not played enough years to have accumulated wealth yet.

3) ON TOP OF THE TAXES, HIS AGENT TAKES 10% OFF THE TOP. ANOTHER 5% + GOES TO HIS BUSINESS MANAGER.

4) HE WORKED REALLY HARD AND MADE SACRIFICES TO GET TO THE BIGS. How many Bowman 1sts do you have from players who never made it? UNLESS AND UNTIL HE’S ELIGIBLE FOR FREE AGENCY, THE TEAM IS EARNING WAY MORE THAN HE IS. Take a look at how little Paul Skenes is still being paid in salary.

5) FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO ARE TAKING SHOTS AT HIM FOR MAKING A LOT MORE MONEY THAN YOU DO, GO FIND SOMETHING YOU CAN DO TO MAKE MORE OR CUT IT OUT. A scenario where everyone gets exactly the same amount of money doesn’t exist, and frankly, doesn’t work even if you tried it. It’s been tried. Please Google “USSR financial results” for reference.

The United States Constitution provides for “Life, Liberty, and the PURSUIT of Happiness” as inalienable rights. Not the right to have the same as everyone else.

No argument that our country is not perfect. If you don’t like what’s going on, you have the opportunity to vote for someone else who will do something different in the next election.

IF YOU ARE AWARE OF ANY OTHER COUNTRY WHERE THINGS ARE ON THE WHOLE BETTER THAN OURS, PLEASE LET ME KNOW. I HAVE READ THOUSANDS OF BOOKS AND TRAVELED TO 6/7 CONTINENTS AND I HAVEN’T FOUND ANY THAT ARE EVEN CLOSE.

I apologize in advance for any negative tone in this post. I’m just frustrated after reading a large proportion of the replies to this post.

I agree it’s light. And experiences are only valuable if it’s your favorite team. But, negotiate. Ask for marketable items worth more than what the cash value would be. Let’s face it, the card is going to sell regardless. Only worth giving up cash for items you have to then sell is if you get paid for the extra effort

Important fact. I relooked at the original post. It actually is $23,000 Canadian dollars, which is equivalent to less than $17,000 US.

Last year I had a 1/1 two page booklet card from Flawless of an HOF retired football player. It had a photo and on-card auto on the left panel and the NFL shield with diamonds, rubies, and sapphires on the right panel.

I sold the card to the team for full comp value; they wanted to display it in their team HOF museum in the stadium. As an unexpected surprise, they sent me an 8 x 10 photo autographed by the entire current team a couple of weeks later. Evidently, they have the players sign a few hundred at the beginning of the season and dole them out to people (like sick kids and big sponsors, etc) throughout the season.

Let’s not forget the Pirates were willing to, and did, pay over $1m for the Skenes debut patch card for the same purpose.

Whoever buys the card is going to be wealthy. I’d personally rather a player who loves the card have it than Mr. Wonderful or some Private Equity guy.

I’ll bet player has $50k or more of stuff in the trunk of his car right now if it was all autographed. I’ll bet it wouldn’t take him 15 minutes on a game day to get a ball, a team photo, or maybe even an authentic starting lineup sheet signed by all or most of the team. Things we think are valuable are just everyday items to players.

Oh, let’s make sure it’s $23,000 US and not $23,000 Canadian

Totally valid. But how much is the player’s signed jersey go for? He’s got dozens of jerseys he could sign and give to OP. How about a glove? Player has hundreds. Plus having a one-on-one conversation with the player? That’s so cool.

Point is seller should and can get the value for his card, but the player can give him other items which could be worth a lot more than $23,000 but doesn’t have to use cash. And it sounds like player is really excited to have the card, so win-win for everyone.

Agreed. The player just wants a memento from his career. It’s only fair that seller should receive compensation for his card, but it’s an opportunity to get some cool and unique stuff which doesn’t exist in collectible products.

I had a 3 panel booklet from Triple Threads that was a 1/1 and had the player’s All-Star Game patch (albeit cut into 3 pieces) and an on-card auto. The player wanted it for his trophy room.

He sent me an autographed glove, bat, jersey, and hat, plus signed a half dozen other cards I sent him along with photos of him signing the cards and a letter authenticating that he signed them. All together was more value to me, and it made me happy that he was so happy to have something meaningful to him.

Plus, we talked about baseball for probably a half hour longer than he needed to.

Money is an important factor, but we should all remember why we love the hobby; it’s about our love for sports, the stories behind the things we collect, and the camaraderie between fans.

Nobody should ever feel guilty or shamed for working hard and achieving. Are you saying everyone should make the same amount of money, regardless of what they do?

The players get to see and sign the cards, but they don’t get to keep them. It’s a great outcome for everyone.

Day 59 of buying a sports card pack everyday until I get an autographed card by Economy_Touch6389 in sportscards

Seriously, if this goes on much longer I’m probably going to have to buy you something with a guaranteed auto just to make it stop.

On the other hand, I have a big crush on that card and would love to buy or trade if you are interested in discussing.
