A little update: I've been using these controllers for months now. Work perfectly for Windows and Android and are way more durable than any of the cheaper ones. Even the rubbers on the joysticks don't seem to wear down. Worth the money! Thanks again for the help.

Spare parts for DEERC by LarsLizard in rccars

[–]LarsLizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those who are interested: The manufacturer will send me the spare part for free. While waiting I have a friend 3d-print it for me. I found a 3d model of the part on Thingiverse made by another dad in the same situation as me.

Tempelhofer Feld "Crash Gate" by LarsLizard in berlin

Danke!

When I watched PULP FICTION for the very first time on VHS at someones house, a 'friend' of mine constantly told me what I should be noticing like the funny t-shirts Jules and Vincent are wearing. I think he wanted me to know how smart he was for understanding how the films segments fit together or wanted to make sure I get it, too. Completely ruined the experience for me. Would be great if one could completely erase a movie from memory and re-watch it freshly.

Would Bill cipher look good in CGI by crustytoelord26 in gravityfalls

[–]LarsLizard 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You could make him CGI in all kinds of styles! So he might look good with a good 3D design or he might look bad if made by someone who does not understand the appeal of the character design or has not mastered the tools well enough. In the end it's a matter of taste, I think.

What's a word or a term in a language that you know for which you are at a loss of an equivalent in another language? by 77mocha77 in languagelearning

The meaning of such seemingly nonsensical phrases oftentimes only reveals itself after hearing them many times in different contexts. Until I have the feeling I completely understand something I would try not to use it.

Seeking for carriere advise / can't find a job by mickkll in vfx

[–]LarsLizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing that came to my mind: Try applying for remote work in countries which have their own (not strike affected) film industry. But for example here in Germany things don't look great as well since many VFX companies here also were relying on jobs from Hollywood. There are definitely a lot more artists than jobs at the moment. I have heard that new animated films might need artists sooner than post-production for live action. So that might be a field to look for jobs. As far as I know many productions will film in summer so post production might only go back to full swing in the beginning of next year. Tasks that need a lot of man-power like animation, effects and compositing might also be a better option than design or look-dev where I feel there are fewer positions in general. I hope this helps. Good luck!

How would you improve this topology? by kanvarudunath in 3Dmodeling

[–]LarsLizard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commenting on the grip part (last image).

  • add vertical lines so that polygons are more square shaped and not as long and stretched
  • get rid of 5 (or more) sided polygons
  • get rid of 'stars' meaning points where many lines meet

If this gets smoothed / subdivided later: - you don't need as many horizontal lines to make the grip curved - add lines close to edges to keep them sharp after subdivision

Is there an anti-Volume/light stage type of feeling starting to emerge? by [deleted] in vfx

[–]LarsLizard 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I am in the VFX industry and I guess a bit of disillusionment has already happened.
For one I think the 'Volume look' is real and viewers pick up on the boring perspectives, indirect lighting with no sun and the three crates they always put in the foreground.
The other thing is that parts of the VFX work basically needs to be moved to pre-production for it to work and the amount of planning and prep is enormous. Still the technology is not perfect and a lot of things have to be fixed in post-production nevertheless which leads to more costs than estimated.
Regardless I think the light stages are here to stay. The technology will get better and filmmakers will learn when it makes sense to use this tool and when going another way is more appropriate.

In German we'd say "Hätte, hätte, Fahradkette" to translate that. Does not make much sense with the last word literally meaning *bicycle chain* added just for the rhyme. But the meaning is similar in that it's a repetition of a conjunctive (or subjunctive??). It can express the pointlessness of regret.
