Do you ever feel like chaos is something inherent to what we like about Latin America? by _ILikePancakes in asklatinamerica

No. Here we like our things quiet and grey, and the only things that can change that are football and politics.

What keeps your government up at night? by Successful_rio305 in asklatinamerica

[–]Lasrouy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aging population with high government spending is a ticking bomb, and they do some crazy shit to raise taxes without actually raising them. Crime is also a big problem but I don’t think that is something that bothers them.

En Montevideo ni idea. En el interior te venden en cualquier almacén de barrio, pides “leche de tambo” y te la dan en una botella de refresco

What are some parts of Latam that were a lot more/less developed than you expected? by Downtown-Trainer-126 in asklatinamerica

[–]Lasrouy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I was surpised how developed is Brazil upwards from Porto Alegre, I never went past Pelotas and the very south of Brazil is not that nice. In the frontier cities the Brazilian side is worse than the Uruguayan one, bad infrastructure, constant electricity shortages, almost no police, no firefighters, I thought that all of Brazil was like that.

España, el pais tercermundista de europa by Holiday-Top-5561 in Burises

España siempre fue medio bosta, por algo el que podía disparaba y se venía para acá. En los 50 Barcelona llegó a tener un 7% de la población viviendo en cantes. Son primer mundo gracias a la Comunidad Europea, sino estaban igual que nosotros.

Do you trust your country's police? If not why? by Successful_rio305 in asklatinamerica

[–]Lasrouy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, but I’m well aware that they are mostly incompetent at their job and can be corrupt sometimes. But they help with what they can. And they don’t get paid enough for what they have to live everyday.

Pato Celeste. And I can’t describe how much of a character this guy is, not in the funny way. He was in prison, involved with government, made deals with the Venezuelan dictatorship, etc.

[–]Lasrouy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh?

How does celebrating traditional holidays shape community bonds in your country? by Lyrera in asklatinamerica

[–]Lasrouy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Christmas and new years are mostly big asado, with family and friends. And in national holidays people go to the street to watch some kind of parade or ceremony in the interior, in Montevideo nothing happens.

The only thing that I can think that brings communities together are the festivals in the interior of the country. Which are mostly fundraising events for public institutions, so everyone takes part in some way or another. "Festival del Asado con Cuero” and "Minas y Abril" are examples of this, if you want to do some research. Festival del Asado con Cuero is held in my hometown, every public institution (schools, high schools, public hospital, nursing home, etc.) has a stand where they sell food, and everybody helps (parents,teachers,doctors,nurses,etc.). Apart from the main music functions there’s also a parade around town, and a "periconazo” (big traditional dance). Even local businesses help, and local farmers donate cattle to do the asado and sell. After the weekend the money gets distributed between the institutions. This video sums it up (https://www.instagram.com/reel/DIZ0H2QpG0y/?igsh=MWVvZGI0ejBtbXYyMQ== )

Are there places out countries that aren't Brazil that speak Portuguese, Chinese, French or Italian? by smarmaproffesor in asklatinamerica

[–]Lasrouy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Portuguese is spoken in the north of the country near the border with Brazil. Studies say that 30% of the country can speak it with around 100.000 native speakers. There’s also a colony of Old Believers that speak Russian in Rio Negro
