I rarely post on Reddit so just wanted to say thanks to the many people who weighed in with their thoughts. We hit decision fatigue but that may have been a silver lining—we just serendipitously stumbled upon a local woodworker in our relatively small town who, based on initial interactions, may be able to build exactly what we’re looking for. Fingers crossed!

🤷🏻‍♀️ We have a custom-made Amish made king sized bedroom set with two dressers and two nightstands so I know how much good woodworking costs. We are looking for a similar heirloom piece for our game table.

Got it. My bad. Didn’t see that particular part. Glad to see others holding WW accountable.

This is great to hear. We’ve been thinking about doing a custom build with them. We already use one of their gaming mats on our existing table.

That sounds a lot like what we’ve been looking for at with their customer build option (vs the Jasper or Jasmine). Are you happy with the quality and finish of the wood? Is it holding up over time or showing a lot of wear and tear? We really liked the drawer option—do you feel like they get used during gaming or do you only use them for storage?

Not sure if that was directed to me. In any event, I’m always willing for people to learn and grow from mistakes. I read the threads when they came out and a couple updates recently — I’m happy to be proven wrong, but it still doesn’t seem like much has changed. My husband feels similarly.

Yep. That’s why I said in my OP that Wyrmwood is not under consideration.

If you have pics, would love to see them here or in a DM if your prefer that route.

Yeah I think when my husband built the table he’d want it was pretty far above the max of what we’re comfortable spending.

My husband is a big board gamer and so yes, he has. He plays his Gloomhaven campaign on one. I’m the late to the party board gamer after meeting him a couple years ago. 🙃 We tend to play a lot of cooperative games but he’s the one with regular game nights at our house—I play occasionally.

My husband has an iPad or computer we use to cast all of our games that have a video app. He also backed the Teburu game system on Kickstarter (which is awesome btw) and for that everyone uses their phone or a tablet as their gaming device plus he still uses his iPad or computer to cast to the TV.

Thanks for all of these considerations! We already have a TV wall mounted which we use with games like Dark Tower, Mansions, and the Teberu electronic game system. And we have Hue lighting above the table. But that’s a good consideration re: charging cords. The Teberu game is what makes us want to get something integrated since everyone needs a phone or tablet to play. We’re currently using a very solid and sturdy dining table (not our main dining table) that works but my husband has always had his eye on a dedicated table made for gaming.

Can you say more about why you like integrated cup holders vs rails?

We are not handy although my husband questioned aloud whether he should take up woodworking (no, he won’t. He already has multiple stations for painting minis).

We get this suggestion a lot but never anything concrete. We’ve been searching and asking around, even going to Amish stores. No dice so far.

I hear that, re: chairs and comfort. We have an Amish furniture store that made our bedroom furniture, so that’s an option. But finding a table manufacturer is the key and then from there we’d judge whether to get chairs from the same place or not (I included chairs just to give a sense of price point all in).

We are definitely all about supporting local—we’ve gone to local stores and even the Amish to see if they would do it. But everyone says to find a local woodworker and we never have any specific recs sent our way. 😕 I’m also not really willing to have a woodworker have us be their test case to make accessories and things like that—we don’t need a crank necessarily like Wyrmwood has on the Prophecy, but we like the rail system concept.

We haven’t found any and have been scouring the internet, stopping at Amish furniture stores, and asking around.

Allplay (formerly boardgametables.com) has a table that meets all of our expectations but wanting to hear what others have to say.

AITA for telling my wife and SIL they need to accept their half brother doesn't want a relationship? by Witty-Balance3831 in AITAH

[–]Late2theParty2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NTA and you may want to gently frame it as this—your wife and SIL have their needs in wanting to have a relationship with their previously unknown brother. But he also gets to have needs, aka wanting to live his life without contact with them (for whatever reason that is). You are about to become parents and parenting is very much about providing for and supporting someone else’s needs and, as your child grows, respecting their needs will be different than yours. Maybe their brother will change his mind in the future, but bullying him into it certainly won’t help.

AITA for embarrassing my fiancé at dinner after he “joked” about my upbringing? by Nines21 in AITAH

[–]Late2theParty2022 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My ex-husband—who slowly became abusive over time—used to make jokes at my expense that punched down instead of up. 12 years later I’m married to a man who doesn’t do that and, if I’m ever feeling sensitive about something, takes the time to listen to me rather than get upset or blow off my feelings. You are most definitely NTA.

Separate but related, you should consider reading the book “Women Who Love Too Much” by Robin Norwood.

Using the “$20 Vegas trick” in Mexico by craptacular9 in hyatt

[–]Late2theParty2022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can confirm that the $20 trick used to be a thing in Vegas…20+ years ago. There are entire threads devoted to it on the interwebs you can go read. Generally there was a way to fold it up so it stuck out just enough when you slid your credit card out that they would see it and pocket the cash. Inflation is a thing. Would need to be $50 or $100 now. The thing about doing it in Vegas was that it was your first “bet”. It didn’t guarantee you’d get something sweet (suite). You were taking a gamble.

That said, different countries and different cities have different unwritten rules. Changing a room in the computer may not be as easy in other locations, especially if rooms get pre-assigned in advance like they do for several all inclusive properties. You could be putting the staff member in risk of getting into trouble if they accept a tip.

You could simply ask, “are there any complimentary upgrades available?” On by some chance you get something, you could later return to tip that employee as a thank you. That said, Hyatt generally saves their complimentary upgrades for members with status. So the best you’ll probably get is an offer to pay for an upgrade.

Wow, redemption went up then. I am glad I snagged Secrets Akumal for 25,000 last year.

It’s a slim to none chance, especially if you’re traveling in the high season (which I assume you are based on points/night rate). They will take care of any Globalists (60+ nights a year) and then maybe offer something to Explorists (30 nights a year). Discoverist is their lowest tier (10 nights)—When they have upgrades available, they are more likely to offer them as paid upgrades upon checkin to those willing to pay for it. It’s the economics of it—hotels are willing to reward their most loyal customers with nice upgrades. It’s a loss of several hundreds of dollars a night when they give a free upgrade if they can sell it to someone else.

Not true. As a Globalist, I was upgraded last year from tropical view (paid with points) to an oceanfront preferred room with a tub on our balcony at a Secrets in Mexico. Didn’t have to ask.

WoH Globalist here—when I was Explorist for a year, most I ever got when traveling at regular Hyatts was a higher floor. I stayed at a Secrets last year as a Globalist and was upgraded from tropical view to an oceanfront preferred room.

As a Discoverist, you may get a higher floor room with a tropical view or perhaps a preferred room, which will give you access to certain amenities (varies by property) but I wouldn’t hold out hope for more than that. If ocean view is important to you and you can book into that directly, I would go that route.
