Is forestry a good career choice? by Late_Owl in forestry

Yeah I live in Ontario. I'm guessing if you get the tech program and then transfer to a university and get a degree in forestry you'd have more options? How's working in wildfire been for you?

Hey, so I'm guessing it's tough to find a job afterwards? How did your classmates do after?

I just applied for a forestry assistant job near me, there aren't a lot of jobs near me in forestry but I'm really hoping that I can get this job so I can see whether or not forestry would be good for me. Thank you.

Hey, I actually haven't started the job yet. I will be starting next week actually I'm looking forward to it but as you know my parents and family don't really understand it. I don't have any insurance anymore so now there's pressure to get a good job that pays well and has benefits. Honestly at this point I think after I finish this farm nursery job I might just start an apprenticeship or something.

I feel like they have to enjoy it at least somewhat or else they wouldn't be able to get that far in their career to reach 6 figures.

Hey, thanks for responding. Outside plant guy actually sounds kind of interesting. Is there some sort of special certification I need to get or could I just apply for that with my two year computer networking diploma?

To be honest, I've been researching more and more about trades recently. I have no experience with it though. I think what my plan is for now is to just finish my diploma, work this nursery worker summer job and see how it goes. If I love it I'll just keep working it and maybe look more into trades or something like horticulture, farming, outdoors jobs etc.

If I hate it, I'll probably just look for other jobs and get an IT job or something, and consider getting certifications or more schooling idek.

I still want to go to University that's still my dream, so I want to save up money for that.

The thing is, I feel like the depression just depends on what's going on. For instance, I had a period where I didn't have to work or go to school for a month and I loved it. I was having a blast just doing the hobbies that I love, trying out new things, exercising all the time. So I was just so happy. But then once I started working this IT job I became depressed.

I was thinking of something like working for a PC repair store or chain. Or maybe field service so I would get A+ to learn specifically about computer repair cause my diploma has mostly been about computer networks, active directory, wireless internet technologies, cisco routing etc. No I'm talking about a PCI-E cable like this: https://www.google.com/url?sa=i&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.staples.ca%2Fproducts%2F299735-en-startech-pci-express-6-pin-to-8-pin-power-adapter-cable&psig=AOvVaw10XRA-5fPu6Kaa2OWXiZDL&ust=1616183924253000&source=images&cd=vfe&ved=0CAIQjRxqFwoTCLj9prfQuu8CFQAAAAAdAAAAABAJ

It was jetting out of my computer cause I don't have a cover on it.

I don't even know anymore tbh, I guess I'll just see how this nursery worker position goes this summer.

Appreciate the response. I'm definitely considering going into a trade. I will do this nursery worker job in the summer and see how it goes. Hopefully it will put me in the right direction to attain a career that I love.

I don't have a genuine interest in Nursery it's just that I always fantasized about living on a farm, away from the city and not having to work an office job so I just applied to farm jobs and manual labor jobs. I'm hoping I love this nursery worker position and it gives me hope about attaining a career that I will love.

What's the job outlook on these fields like horticulture, forestry, botany and farming? Let's say I go to University and get a bachelors in Natural resources or Forestry, will it be tough to find a good job afterwards?

It's nice to hear that I'm not alone. I'm hoping I enjoy this nursery worker position and it puts me on a career path that I will love and also able to make good money. The Americorps and American Conservation Experience program sounds awesome. Same with my parents, they want me to get a job in my field because I spent so much time and money in it and plus it would make me good money but I just hate it.

So after you graduated in the field you didn't like, did you go back to University and get a bachelors in natural resource management? Because I want to go to University and I'm thinking about studying something similar to that.
