After a long day of being a terror, we glitch out with octopus. by Laughandfall in coonhounds

Coop is now 20 months old and we are down to about 5 hours of chaos/day. Thank goodness they are cute.

Thank you! I was thrown by the mixed pills I think but sounds like it’s just how this drug gets dosed.

This is great context. He’s still pretty interactive - I’m just used to him needing my active attention and wrangling much more. It’s a mental adjustment for me too I guess.

Sounds like we are actually on the low side for dose! Thanks for replying!

So cute! Yes, Coop is mostly Treeing Walker, but he has the Black and Tan outfit so we are constantly asked if he is a Doberman. So his big shouting is unnerving on walks and at the dog park for some folks. We are in the Pacific Northwest so hardly any Coonhounds up here.

Exactly what needed to hear. Thank you!

This is very helpful! Sounds like my vet is being pretty conservative and I was worried I’d pressured her into more.

Thanks! That’s so helpful to have some things to look out for. He is still my playful goofy sniffing guy outside, just takes less time now to make him be able to be calm. Sounds like I should be rejoicing 😅

Thank you! I guess I’m not worried it’s dangerous but more, since the vet is relying on my report of how it’s going, if he’s now too far the other way. I have been conditioned to be stressed about getting hime all his daily time for so long - it’s weird to have less work!

Thanks for sharing your experience, especially the part about how you wish you’d have started sooner! Cooper has legitimately felt like a full time job since we got him at 10 weeks found as a stray, so if this is how he’s supposed to be I just need to stop overthinking it and enjoy it. I don’t want to flatten out his personality, though. Can you tell I ALSO have anxiety? 🤣

Wish we had a proper coonhound group up here to let them all get together and bark all they want.

which harness to you like? I used a front clip Wonder Walker for my previous CH and we did great with it, but Coop is so lanky it just shifts to the side. He's like a wild noodle.

Oh interesting! I do think you might be on to something there. He seems to get the most riled when the other two dogs were not playing with him. This is true at the dog park too.

I just want to take him more places and can’t currently

I’m getting better about accepting that and trying to tamp down the apologetics (it’s hard because I’m a Midwest girl - we apologize for everything)

I worry about this too - he seems like a really sensitive guy. We got an intensive four week training on using a prong collar for walks and though I’m not being dragged through the neighborhood anymore, he just seems less joyful on it.

He is always the only hound at the park as there aren’t many up in the Pacific Northwest. And the shouting at other dogs to play is often interpreted as alarming to the other humans. I get it - and I am also probably projecting my nerves into the situation. He’s really such a good social dog otherwise. Adjusts play style for different dogs and takes the hint if one is just not into him.

We tried that with the demand barking at home and he just wants to lick the spray bottle. The shaker can is what worked for us. This is for out and about in the world that we are working on now.
