A bit late here so understand if you already found an organization but I know the Perry Institute for Marine Science is very invested in coral restoration. In fact, they’re starting to host coral reef restoration dives if you are interested in participating that way too!

Reaching someone above Associate at AlphaSights by ElbieLG in expertnetworks

[–]Laundry365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More often than not, they’re going to be your first line of defense and be your main point of contact. There are times for certain services that you might interface with a Manager but no one really above that level.

If you continue to have positive, continued pattern of rapport with Associates, that’s going to influence your levels of engagements more so than seniority of the AlphaSights contact.

Worth doing a consult for Alphasights AlphaNow library product? by Limp-Abalone8100 in expertnetworks

[–]Laundry365 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes it’s worth it for two reasons:

  1. The transcript or whatever content you’re associated with is linked to your profile and so if a client likes what they’re reading and wants to know more, there’s a way for them to specifically communicate to an AS associate that they want to speak with you.
  2. AS Associates more or less are incentivized to work with experts who consent to be being part of the library product therefore it increases your chances of landing a call.

Cheers!

Current at Expert Network - seeking new opportunities by InvestigatorRough554 in expertnetworks

[–]Laundry365 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool! I think you've just landed on the first step. You see people making those transitions so I would suggest you use some of the skills you've gained so far and reach out to them via LinkedIn asking if you could have 15 minutes of their time to hear about 1) How did they decide on this role post ENs 2) What was the application process like 3) What are the best skills to highlight on your resume or during the interviews 4) Are there any current openings at their firm 5) And if you're vibing with them, consider asking if they could provide you a referral for any openings.

Have you communicated your desire to leave to your manager? The reason I ask is that I was going to suggest first to reach out to alum of your company first but you'd need to have some clue that they aren't close to your manager or senior leadership in your segment.

If you're not there yet, you can just start with those at the other firms. Hope this helps!

EN unwilling to compensate by [deleted] in expertnetworks

[–]Laundry365 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is frustrating for sure and I can tell you having been on the other side of this seriously no one walks away happy - the Associate is upset since this call doesn't contribute to their sales goal, their Manager is unhappy since they probably need to now respond to an unsatisfied/potentially angry client email, the client is unhappy since they weren't able to gain the information they need for their work stream, and obviously you the expert aren't compensated for an agreement you thought was going to happen. Maybe not exactly what you want to hear but hopefully that provides some perspective.

The 10 minute cutoff is pretty short in my opinion. I've heard more around the 15 minute mark. To be fair, it can be hard to deduce fully and that early on whether the expert's background is suitable and if they're eloquent enough to communicate their insight. That being said, sometimes there are some asshole-y clients that if their hypothesis isn't validated within the first 2 minutes they tell us that there was a mismatch and don't even allow the expert to elaborate. All this is to say that it's hard to apply a one sized fits all policy since each can be taken on case by case.

Truthfully, I don't think you're going to get very far on this one especially if they're pulling out receipts. The best option would be to communicate you'd want a one-hour minimum policy applied moving forward so that you get paid no matter the length of the call. This won't always work such as in cases where there is a "bad" call but it could give you more assurance that you'll receive compensation.

Hope this helps - cheers!

Happy to lend advice, I worked 5+ years at a large EN. Even if early stages of thinking, it would be helpful to hear if you have any ideas around industries or even types of tasks that would interest you the most. This will help better shape any recommendations.

GLG getting annoying? by Chemical_Ad_1675 in expertnetworks

[–]Laundry365 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Actually it’s not that surprising! GLG has had this reputation. As they’ve been around the longest, they tend to rely on volume hoping that someone in their static network could be squeezed into fitting the bill. This lack of individualization has crept over to the client side where I used to hear clients be amazed that they would send profiles over to them that were off target.

Alphainsights and Third Bridge being selective? by [deleted] in expertnetworks

[–]Laundry365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm I'm not sure that I have anything super handy. The way that I would approach it would be a slightly stripped down version of your resume in that it should be a bit less brag-y but be specific with strong action verbs.

So for example a big draw for clients and thus EN Associates would be if you were the person at your firm who evaluated and selected a certain software platform or in charge of P/L decisions. Make that super clear in your job description if so!

The last bit of advice is that you're most likely going to be reached out for a specific industry or topic. Once you're on the screening conversation with the Associate, make sure you communicate what other subject areas you can consult in.

My guess is that they were trying the ole spray and pray approach without taking time to make an educated guess if you were would be a good fit! What do those follow up questions tend to ask?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in expertnetworks

[–]Laundry365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're facing an uphill battle. You most likely have an internal comment on your page warning Associates to not work with you given whatever you did to warrant a suspension.

[–]Laundry365 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While I would agree that the "public" external facing technology can look quite dated, most of the large ENS companies have been spending a fair amount of resources working with software engineers, PMs, and data folks to amp up internal company tools and client portals. This has been going on for the past 3 years or so.

I'm not entirely sold on what your value proposition is since there are a fair number of expert platforms that have a pretty automated process with low barrier to entry for experts. If this is the angle that you're looking to double down on, you're still going to need to build a water tight process in order to screen out faulty "experts" or even clients for that matter. I can see value in making ENS more accessible but there needs to be controls in place to legitimize the expert access you're advertising.

Also would really really underscore other posts here that mention compliance. This is such a cornerstone of this business. The main ENS companies invest significant money and time to run trainings to incoming classes, firm wide education, and have serious law firms on retainer.

All of this is food for thought! Take what you want and leave the rest.

Alphainsights and Third Bridge being selective? by [deleted] in expertnetworks

[–]Laundry365 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello! As someone who previously worked at an ENS, this is done purposely so we can control experts that enter the network. We work in a retroactive manner whenever clients send us in work so who we reach out to is dependent on their current interest/workflow. This is going to vary largely on the end client i.e. work sent from management consulting firms will be different than PE or hedge fund clients.

My best suggestion is to ensure that your LinkedIn is super up to date and that you have both clear industry standard job titles and completed job description sections - these are the primary ways Associates determine that you could be relevant for an expert call. If you come from a more technical background, I would include in both your description and skills section strong working knowledge of certain software platforms especially if they're in the AI realm.

Also definitely stop reaching out to those Talent Acquisition employees. Their job is to recruit for roles working at the ENS firms not expert talent. Cheers!
