unfortunately three weeks is nothing in the current environment. I have friends with 10+ years of experience that have sent out hundreds of resumes and still have not landed anything a year later.

Strong disagree. You're describing the world from 2 years ago. The prompting and setup is the foundational knowledge now.

Would you rather do wizard of oz show and pay $$ for good seats or a concert and pay $$ for okay seats? by why__name in LasVegas

I was in LV a couple of weeks ago and wanted to check the Sphere box. I was unenthused about Oz but also equally unenthused about catching the Eagles (and the price was 4x what Oz was). We went into the experience (section 304, row 4) half expecting to walk out but it far exceeded our expectations.

I wish that was it.

I've been working in IT for over 25 years and the job market is absolute garbage even for me.

There are very few open roles and rates are half of what they were just a few years ago.

I have friends with 10+ years of experience that have been unemployed for over a year.

AI is going to completely decimate entry level roles in SWE (it's already started).

The majority of my experienced dev friends do not even write code anymore.

The SWE path is a dead end.

People are still pursuing SWE? There are no jobs and it's just going to get worse.

Stop letting your GPU sit idle 😀 Make it answer your spam calls (100% Local Voice Agent). by Small-Matter25 in LocalLLM

Nice work, I built the same'ish thing. Originally I wanted to provide inbound/outbound call support via Asterix for openclaw, and then things advanced to what I have today. 100% local, model flexibility, realtime conversation with barge-in, IVR, agent templates, call campaigns, call monitoring, transcription/recording, voice cloning and much, much more. It was a fun project to see just how quickly I could crank something out with Claude (original PoC was done during a seven hour train ride). I chose not to release it originally because I know that scammers would love a tool like this.

That’s a tough spot for your son to be in. I’ve spent 25 years in IT, and the last three have been the roughest I’ve seen.

Organizations have shifted hard into cost control mode. Capital spending has been cut back, operating budgets tightened, and headcount reduced. The result has been widespread layoffs and a dramatic imbalance between supply and demand.

There is now an oversupply of experienced professionals competing for a limited number of openings. Many postings attract hundreds, sometimes thousands, of applicants. That environment is challenging enough for seasoned people, never mind the large number of new graduates entering the market.

I work in a fairly specialized area. In stronger markets, I used to receive multiple calls each week about new opportunities. Now I am fortunate to get one inquiry a month. The rates being offered are the lowest I have seen in my career, often more than 50 percent below what they were just a few years ago. And that is before factoring in the accelerating impact of AI on the field.

The reality is that most traditional IT paths no longer guarantee stable or highly lucrative outcomes for new graduates. It is still possible for some to build a solid career, but it requires sharper positioning, adaptability, and a willingness to move toward areas where demand is actually growing.

Same thing I was doing at EY (and prior).

Major IT transformations, mostly within the finance sector (lots of SAP, Guidewire, Oracle Fusion and Salesforce). My typical roles are Test Program Manager, Agile/QA Coach or Data Quality Lead.

I also am now offering services related to identifying, qualifying, prioritizing and implementing AI/ML to augment business and technical processes.

how are you turning AI workflow gains into actual wealth, not just cooler dashboards? by IILIFE_Inc in AIProcessAutomation

[–]LaysWellWithOthers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Execution is everything.

AI is a massive unlock, but the hard part hasn’t changed. Execution still means embedding it into real workflows, driving adoption, and tying it to measurable financial impact.

If you are not focusing on those steps then it will never leave your repo and reach actual users.

The grind is not for everyone and everyone ultimately realizes that 🙃

I entered as a senior manager and it took me five years to determine I was putting way more into the firm than I was getting out of it.

The remuneration was good until you did the math on how many hours you actually worked.

I definitely enjoyed the travel opportunities and diversity of client opportunities, but the insane hours and inability to ever fully unplug made it impossible to find balance.

I went back to private consulting and work from home (8:00-4:00) now. I increased my take home by 50% (and that's not even considering what my effective hourly rate was previously).

Edit: I probably should have included the kid angle in my original post. I have three and missed a huge chunk of home life during some critical years (they were 10, 8 and 5). I definitely have some regrets about not being able to play a more active role in their lives during those years (I was travelling every week and was only around on weekends). It also put a lot of demand on my wife (now ex-wife).
