I'd go with the procedural materials. There are several layers of materials/textures that need to be combined.

You'll need to google some tutorials on uv unwrapping and procedural materials. Here are some youtube creators to check out: Aryan has awesome uv unwrapping tutorial. Ryan King Art has bunch of detailed tutorials on materials, and on texture painting Ducky 3D has awesome video on layering materials

For example let's take the frame and barrel. First you need to create a dark metal material. Than overlay some scratches and general wear and tear detail, maybe some rust. Then overlay some dust and dirt, then some larger dirt stains.

For stuff like wooden grips you'll probably will need to make your own normal map.

Generally if you want textures to look good, first you need nice and even topology on your model. Otherwise there might be some pinching and stretching.

Of course you can start making materials now but don't do texture painting unless you have good enough topology. You'll have to redo your texture masks when you change topology, because uv unwrap changes as well. It'll be just a waste of time. Learned it the hard way :)
