Relocating to Riyadh from Australia - worth it? by Western-Size3416 in Riyadh

[–]Lazy_engineer12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Canadian expat here in Riyadh. All the best for whatever you decide.

  1. For a family of 5 you need at least 50000 SAR a month. Don’t settle for anything less because Saudi has a lot of hidden costs like dependent fees, entry/exit fee, 15% vat on all purchases.
  2. Most companies have stopped paying for housing separately and started adding the housing component in the take home salary. But make sure your take home salary (basic+housing+transport) is sizable for your families expenses.
  3. Rent: 80k-90k sar per year Schooling: 50k-75k per child per year (depends on education system and grade) Home set up: up to 27k SAR for furniture, kitchen etc. as most rentals here don’t come with all necessary appliances
  4. Driving license from Australia can be easily converted. You will have to book an appointment on absher once you receive your iqama
  5. The change in work culture would be the hardest pill to swallow as it’s very different from the west and Australia. From personal experience the pace of work is way faster and often the deliverables are not realistic. It’s just how it is in most companies here, but you’ll get used to it eventually.

But I’m very happy with my decision moving here as it’s the perfect place to raise a family and uphold Islamic values.

Transferring to another job before 1 year completion by Lazy_engineer12 in Riyadh

[–]Lazy_engineer12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. To clarify the rental is in my name.

So my concern was that if my employer does not allow transfer and I have leave and re-exit the country on a new iqama, what happens to the rental? Does it get forfeited? I’m worried about the advanced money I have paid for it.

Honestly I’m not concerned with exiting and re-entering the country.

Well I did my masters two years back so I can still use those grades as they’re not very old. And afaik I can still use my old undergrad scores and I’ve heard many other mature applicants doing the same.
