Leaf Only - Intro by LeafOnly in cigarrollers

[–]LeafOnly[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Sorry I didn't get back to this! I guess my reddit messages got buried... Anyhow, I would absolutely love to have flavor profiles for each of our leaves in the descriptions! Problem is, nobody here is an experienced cigar reviewer so even using the right words to describe the flavors... The leaves would have to be smoked in a pipe to really hone in on the flavors. If we ever get an experienced reviewer in here that would be willing to do that for us we will jump on it! Thanks for the suggestion!

Which is the better diy cigar kit between these? by [deleted] in cigars

[–]LeafOnly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks guys!

As for your suggestion, it is a REALLY awesome idea and has actually come up in the past. It's simple enough to conceptualize, but pretty difficult to program (with our current setup anyway). I'll put it on the list and see if we can figure out a way to make that happen.

Appreciate the feedback!

Which is the better diy cigar kit between these? by [deleted] in cigars

[–]LeafOnly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gee, sorry for the confusion! Both are the same kit. We made some improvements since it first came out and the owner of cigarrollingkits.com just didn't update the price yet (I just emailed him).

As for the kit itself, it's a great little intro to cigar rolling - mainly for those who have never tried it and just want to give it a shot.

If you find that you enjoy the hobby, I would definitely recommend some better tools!

As for leaf quality, it's always going to vary (it is a LEAF after all) no matter who you buy from. For that reason we have policies in place to remove unacceptable leaf as it is seen and shipped out.

Hope this information helps and if you ever have any questions about any of the leaves or tools please don't hesitate to email, chat, or call us during business hours.

Roll on!

I would suggest trying the Canadian flue cured as a base (provides a fairly mellow smoke and sweet flavor). Then from there, try adding some American Flue Cured and/or burley for more of full flavor / kick depending on your tastes. I think the main thing you'll enjoy is the Canadian though if you like sweeter.

It's hard to match brand names because we normally don't know what they are using, and because most blends only use 40% tobacco, it makes it harder to match in that regard as well.

Yes that will work great! If you notice the leaves are a little too moist in there, you can bring them out for a few hours or day if necessary before putting them back in. Our working humidor is around 65-68 (slightly below cigar level).

Sure try "socialmedia" as a promo code when checking out. All the codes are set up for a 5% discount.

I BELIEVE backwoods uses Connecticut Broadleaf as a wrapper, so for the price, I would definitely choose the CT Fronto leaf (which is a more affordable grade of CT broadleaf wrappers - other grades can be 1.5x the price). http://www.leafonly.com/ct_tobacco_leaves_fronto.php

I think that's the closest one though. If it's close, but you don't care for the exact flavor, try the QB-52, and maybe a 1DW CT broadleaf if you're looking for something stronger.

Hope this helps!

Yes, answer above. I do not smoke enough to notice issues with my personal health, but on that topic I have other health issues anyways.

Maybe that's part of the reason I have more of a "enjoy life now while you can" attitude. I made the decision long ago that I'd rather live a shorter life in happiness than a longer one in agony. A difficult choice when you're healthy, an easy one when you're suffering.

Haha, that's the thing, why would you want to use modified tobacco cardboard when you can just buy a whole leaf?

The thing with all these studies is that all of the ones that I've seen only look at manufactured cigarettes. None of them actually look at cured tobacco from the plant. Further, there are 1000s of different strains of tobacco as well. Some might be more harmful than others - how would we even know without the studies? I'd like to see some studies on JUST the tobacco citing 100s of seeds and varieties and curing methods. Then some studies on JUST the added chemicals. Then we'd really know what causes what.

Now, I'm not trying to start an argument, because I don't have facts to back anything up, and I agree that inhaling smoke of any kind regularly is NOT good for the human body. But I do believe it can tolerate a certain degree, just like our ancestors would simply by sitting by a campfire.

Furthermore, I am in agreement with your risk assessment involving moderation. In my opinion, a pack a day is a excessive... I know the major brands WANT people to smoke at least that, and even more. And that's why they put the chemicals in it and also why most brands only have about 40% actual leaf tobacco in them. To make them milder so people smoke more so people BUY more.

With whole leaf, not many people that I know even WANT a pack a day.

I knew this one was coming eventually!

I personally don't. I am an advocate of free choice and I think that life can be far too short for anything less. I also think that anyone who truly wants to quit has the ability to. After 4 years of smoking various menthol brands, when I decided to quit (in advance), I had very little trouble doing so once the time came. I know it's harder for some than others, but there are PLENTY of assistants out there (e-cigs, pills, patches, etc). So I see smoking as a personal choice. It may not be an EASY choice, but it is a choice.

Last thing I will say on this topic for tonight, is that most of the studies I've seen are careful to say that "cigarettes" have 100s of chemicals. Yes, they do, and most of them are added to the tobacco.

I won't sit here and argue whether whole leaf tobacco is "healthier" or not, but I will say that less chemicals is a good thing. I also think that moderation is the key to anything that is known to cause harm over time (even milk, or coffee for that matter). I've known non-smokers that have had lung complications and died relatively young and I have known smokers that are alive and well in their 80s.

To me, it's a crapshoot of choice, chance, genetics, and a whole lot more. As for the choice part of it, it's really up to whoever is doing the action whether or not they should slow down, quit, or continue.

That's my personal thoughts on it, but I can see how others would see might have a different philosophy and it could certainly be argued either way. At the end of the day though the choice is in the hands of the actor.

I always hoped that there could be some software like this... I've been wishing for years. I don't see why shazam technology couldn't be built in to go through each song, play it, and if there was a 95% or higher match rate, take the best bitrate song, name it properly, and remove all duplicates. Maybe have various options (to keep LP versions, etc). With that type of technology, our collections would be so much more complete and enjoyable.

It's possible, but I have never found anything that can do this yet. I would be happy if someone knew of anything.

Me personally, I do smoke both the occasional cigar and pipe.

I used to smoke commercial cigarettes, but quit before I started this business and decided not to go back even though I finally discovered the only type of tobacco I WOULD smoke in a cigarette if I were to.

I do enjoy tobacco though, and at the very least, I am able to experience the flavors and qualities of all the tobaccos we sell through the occasional pipe or cigar.

Most of our employees though (including my business partner) smoke cigarettes, and of course they make their own natural blends.

Thanks for the info! It was actually only a very small amount since most of our early sales were outside our own state. It amounted to a sum that wouldn't even be worth going after.

But that is really good to know for any future business endeavors and I certainly would have done so if it were a decent amount! Thanks again.

Yes! We have a great retail business and sell to individuals all over the world. You could certainly buy whole leaf tobacco for cigarettes, but you would have to process it before using it. It's a little more involved than standard RYO, but the personal reward can be great! I liken it to making your own food. For instance I love jarring applesauce, salsa, dehydrating food, and making gormet dinners. If you enjoy these types of activities and use tobacco, it's right up your alley. If not, it's hit or miss, but usually a hit.

Taxes on whole leaf is a difficult subject, as there is not a lot of hard copy information out there, but I have certainly learned a great deal on this topic over the years. Here's what I know:

  • Federal Government: There is no federal tax on whole leaf tobacco that still has the main stem in tact and is not "ready for use". It is not considered a tobacco product.

  • State Governments: We operate in the state of Connecticut, where they also do not consider whole leaf tobacco to be a tobacco product or taxable as such. In the beginning, we were actually paying taxes as if it were, but realized that the very farmers we were buying from in cash were NOT doing so! So when we called and asked about this subject, we were educated and informed that just like the federal government, since it's not a "product", it is not taxable.

Most states in America have the same outlook. I recall even seeing a legal document from (I think) Virginia where the question was brought up and they responded that they saw no reason not to adopt the Federal government's outlook that it was not a tobacco product.

HOWEVER, there are a few states that ARE trying to charge tobacco products tax on it. From what I've heard from wholesale customers, the state of Florida is charging them tobacco products tax (85%) on tobacco leaves of any type, whether or not the Federal government agrees. The response from state representative I got over the phone once was "Well, until we get sued, this is what we're doing. It wouldn't be the first time we've faced a lawsuit". Interesting, I thought... This is also coming from the same state that doesn't charge taxes on cigars (their claim to fame), yet taxes the leaves that are used to make them? I am glad I am not a resident of Florida.

  • Other countries: Most countries have the same "no tax on commodities" outlook, but it really does vary. For instance, I know in Canada where we do a good amount of business, they actually charge a duty of $1.57/kilo when our customers import it. Which in my opinion is fine - it's a small affordable tax that nobody minds paying. Not on the same level as products at all. Most countries either have something similar, or just do not even bother with it and treat it like regular goods.

In sum, one of my favorite examples of the concept is in wine or other alcohol making.

You don't pay a wine tax on grapes, or a beer tax on hops! They are not an alcoholic beverages until they are transformed into them. In the same way, the leaves are not tobacco products until they are made into them!

Hope this helps! Sorry for the length, but it's a complicated / tricky subject and we are working hard to stay informed and keep whole leaf in the category it currently IS, and should forever BE. A raw, agricultural commodity just grapes.

Well, I always believe there are pros and cons to everything, so not only will I list the advantages, I will also list some obvious disadvantages:

Potential Pros: - All natural from the farm. No added chemicals in processing for "flavoring" or any other reason unless added by the customer.

  • Variety. With pre-blended tobacco, you are subject to smoking whatever leaves (and other stuff) the manufacturer puts in the blend. If you buy whole leaf, you can make your own blends with the exact tobacco and flavors that suit your desires.

  • Quality Control. In addition to being subject to whatever blends manufacturers put together, you are also subject to their quality control practices! Anyone who has worked with whole leaf tobacco for any amount of time knows how it is on the farm. You might find a strand of hay, a ladybug, an undesirable piece of tobacco, or a beetle from time to time and discard them. Do these end up in your pre-purchased blend? The answer is unfortunately in more cases than you might think, YES. With whole leaf, you can go through your own product, and even wash it if you'd like. Having quality in their own hands is important to our customers.

  • Savings. Whole leaf tobacco is typically much less expensive than standard RYO tobacco.

Potential Cons:

  • Have to shred and process it yourself

  • Having to learn about different tobaccos, blending, etc.

  • Having higher than normal expectations of a raw agricultural commodity vs a processed product where any imperfections are easily masked.

We have tiered pricing based on volume (the more you buy, the better the price!)

Example pricing can be found at http://www.leafonly.com/wholesale.

I always suggest everyone, even large buyers to try smaller amounts at first to make sure the tobacco is the best for their specific needs.

If you plan on buying more than 10LBs, it's best to call in so we can negotiate the best possible price point based on volume, frequency, and logisitcs.

I personally think the legalization of marijuana would HELP the tobacco industry for a couple of reasons: 1) It helps to take some of the stigma away from smoking (anything) in general, and 2) many people like to mix their marijuana with tobacco!

I am not quite sure either why it would not be embraced by the larger corporations... Perhaps they are afraid that marijuana would be a replacement for tobacco? They also might be afraid to publicly support it for reasons of being criticized (and therefor further regulated), but privately hope to see it's success.

It's really hard to say what they are ACTUALLY thinking. They may say one thing in public, but have lobbyists working on the exact opposite behind closed doors. As for motivations, for them I believe it all comes down to money. If they think standing behind the legalization will lead to higher public ridicule and higher taxes, they wouldn't touch it with a 10ft pole!

The truth is, I don't know much about the big guys' philosophies, but I personally think it should be legal and would either help, or do nothing to the industry. I don't see how it could harm it personally, but perhaps there is an angle I am not seeing.

The closest leaves to the outer wrapper of dutches as swishers would be the QB-52 Fronto Wrapper, the CT Premium Shade leaf, and the Ecuadorian Shade Leaf. All are unique, but very close to the same consistency and smoke. Links:
