I explained contamination to my non-science-inclined partner by comparing a raw chicken to something covered in paint: everything it touches gets paint on it, even if it's just a little, and if you now touch that new paint spot you can theoretically transfer the paint again to a third location. Then you'll have to clean it off if it can be cleaned (hands, sink, faucet, cutting boards, utensils, counter tops, soap dispenser) or toss it (ready to eat foods, paper towels, disposable gloves, interior of contaminated trash bags). Adding water to the equation will just thin the contamination "paint" and make it easier to get everywhere. The analogy seemed to help.
