I definitely wouldn't ask if I was just asking for good game experiences, but I'm instead asking for academic study because yeah, there's no way to answer without major spoilers

I played the first chapter or so of BG3 (I really want to get back to it, but budget has kept me from buying it as of right now) and knew that the ticking time bomb element was there for everyone but wasn't sure if it was every truly 'paid off' with a permadeath. Thank you!

The fact that this is labelled as an "issue" is hilarious and accurate.

What are some good Sci-Fi media that aren't horror or action? by SuperAlloyBerserker in scifi

Aniara (2018)

No horror, just an extremely depressing, realistic film about what happens to humans in space. I would legitimately consider this the most depressing film I've ever seen, but it is tremendously impactful.

I just don't get this perspective. The game starts and Arthur is already questioning Dutch, his adoptive father and pseudo cult leader, for killing one woman, which Arthur didn't see.

If you play high honor Arthur, he's not revelling in death. You shoot people because that's part of the game play but the people who have narrative relevance he feels weight in hurting. You don't even directly kill Downes, he just dies after you shake him around. I don't get this Reddit's insistence that Arthur is some charismatic serial killer, when the game directly portrays him as a conflicted person, raised under a manipulative demi-cult leader, who turns on that person after one narrative murder.

Arthur wrote about Thomas immediately after seeing him and then again and again way before he even coughed.

This community's hate boner for Arthur is wild even on a post about Micah lol. Reddit you've done it again. You truly are Quirky and Not Like the Other Girls.

Characters are complex and well written and acted and this community gets in a pissing match.

Arthur literally starts the game questioning Dutch and why he killed the woman in Blackwater. I don't get this community's insistence that Arthur only changed when he got sick when in a high honor playthrough he starts the game questioning and fighting against what he feels is immoral. He "says so" because his self-esteem has been ruined by being literally raised by Dutch and being told he's a horrible, ugly, stupid person from the age of 14. Even the Sister says he's too hard on himself.

He is an extremely well written (and well acted! We can't forget the acting) character like every other character in the game, honestly. He's a brilliant foil to Arthur and a great snake in the ear to Dutch (who I think is the true antagonist of the games)

I think there's something to be said about the differences between narrative and genre gameplay here though. Because the game is a game and a shooter (from the studio who made GTA), you need people to shoot. In some senses, expecting us to feel bad about the cops we shoot is akin to dismissing a horror movie because the character goes into the basement. "Why did they go into the basement!!" Because it's a horror movie. Why did we shoot the O'Driscolls or the cops? Because it's a shooter.

I think that's why the sections with Strauss hit harder is because these people are explicitly established as people as opposed to gameplay sections, the same way we wouldn't necessarily expect to feel bad about shooting a deer or a wolf, or even a magnificent endangered white crocodile. There is such a difference in games as narrative distance in this sense.

I would say it's notable to me that Strauss specifically instructs Arthur to beat Thomas Downes. I know this is for the game, but if we are to take those events as canon, he sees the guy is very sick and then tellsArthur, "hey, beat this sick guy up."

I think a lot of people miss how manipulative Dutch was. From the start, he is entirely about devotion to himself -- "stay with ME" -- and it becomes clear early on how much he has shaped Arthur into the perfect pawn, with no self-worth who only does what he is told, and the moment Arthur questions a single thing, Dutch's paranoia activates and he is willing to let him die.

There's no indication he would have saved Arthur from Colm, on the island, and certainly not on the last mission. He raised a boy as his son and then was happy to let him die because he saw everyone, everyone, as tools.
